This is the first photo I have taken with this body in a number of years. Early in its life it was plagued with sensor corrosion. I had the sensor replaced some months ago, and I am ecstatic with the result. I kick myself for not using it earlier. To me the image quality is fabulous.

Additionally I found Calibrite ColorChecker Passport Photo 2 a few months ago. It is of paramount importance to me, because I am color blind. I have been chasing a solution to my malady forever. This ColorChecker allows me to create correct color every time I use it.

Ansel Adams was famous for never taking a picture of something he could not drive to. He went so far as to have a platform built atop of the roof of his car. I know these two statements to be true because when I was photographing the San Francisco Presidio project for a year and a half, I did portraits of Ed Wayburn. Ansel’s driver back in the day. But that tale is for another time.

I took the trolley, or one just like it, that is the subject of this image to shoot the view from the top of one of the six hills of Lisboa, specifically Miradouro das Portas do Sol. Which means "the view of the door of the sun. Well with a name like that AND there is a trolley to it.... I'm good.

So I get to to the top and there is a cafe with a bar and it serves snacks and has tables. I am really good. I order a pingato, a "snack" and a 10yr Graham's tawny port and grab a chair, as I look up the street i see that i have found the stage. So I set up my tripod and camera plant my self and wait for a trolley in the fog. Based on prior experience why I never take pictures of trolleys in Portugal that I can't find the perfect stage picture sit, have a snack, a coffee and an aged port whilst waiting for the players to arrive. I learn from the masters

This is an image from my last trip to Cuba. This is another image of the dancer Indira. It is a joy to work with Cuban dancers.

I don’t speak a lick of Spanish, unless you count knowing how to ask where the rest room is and how to order my favorite rum. For me photography has always been about slowing down to the speed of life.

Unbeknownst to Indira I matched my breath rhythm to hers and then slowly lowered the pace of our breaths. Somewhere between here and there this is where we found ourselves.

shooitng the Z9 in silent mode with a remote trigger allows for a place when the camera is not I th way. This is an extremely powerful tool because the shutter click gives up the most that the camera has taken a picture. Without that click, that simple little sound, the subject frequently forgets that there is a camera taking a picture.

I shot this image whilst walking down the mountain to see the sunrise over the Vignales valley in Cuba. It was a 2 mile walk with an 800 meter almost 90 degree upward "hike" with two cameras, four lenses and a tripod in 80 degree heat (and the sun had not risen yet). I was soaked in sweat and not caffeinated at all at this point of the journey down the mountain.

In a moment of pause (to catch my breath) I stopped and just took in the wonder of the calm of the moment. In that momentary pause this image took me.

I am in the process of keywording and captioning my images for my new website.

I now know what purgatory feels like.

Light travel an inch every two minutes.

Walking the streets of Yangon, The sun was just starting to set, I saw the sunlight hit a window across the street and hit the street where this woman was sitting selling fruit. I did a quick calculation an between 15 and 25 minutes would put the light where I needed it to be.

This is a color capture captured with a Nikon D70. This is also one of my most favorite images

Quarantine traveling on my server...

I have been some remote placeless but.......

This is from my most recent trip to Myanmar. I traveled 36 hours of flying (not including layovers) then 16 hours by 4 wheel drive to travel 58 miles in to the mountains of Nagaland to attend the New Years festival. This image was captured ioutside a hut that was another two hour drive by 4 wheel drive.

I am going to go a little way out to come back to the point of the thought that goes with the image.

I shot this image in a place you can no longer go, The Rahkine region of Myanmar. I was on assignment for American Photo magazine, We were in a boat on the Irrawaddy river during Monsoon season we were hit with a burst of rain so strong that we frantically had to get to shore so we would not sink, we ran to first hut we could find where a family was huddled in the same situation we were.

The composer Ryuichi Sakamoto passed away on the day I “re-found” this image in one of the, come to find out, Numerous “2_DO” folders I have created over the years that I have forgotten about creating. I happened to be listening to Ryuicihi Sakamoto’s album Coda, a piano treatment of the soundtrack he composed for the movie Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence.

Track 13, Last Regrets, and perhaps my favorite track on the album, had just started as news of Mr. Sakamoto’s passing came up as an alert. The first record I ever owned was Meet the Beatles. The cover just blew m away at the tender age of 6. I drove my parents crazy about only wanting to wear turtle necks and I particularly drove my father nuts by always wanting to have him play the album. Repeatedly. But I digress….

I’ve been fascinated with the light play of the portraits of the Beatles in the cover art. I believe the music I listen to influences the quality of the images I post process. I believe that we should acquire knowledge not as absolutes but as grains of thought that find each other through the course of human events that coalesce in to a beach of creativity.

Art is long. Life is short was Ryuichi Sakamoto’s favorite quote. Coincidence is God's way of remaining anonymous.

Shot this image in class yesterday at the Palm Beach Photographic Centre's Backyard Fine Art class I am teaching this week. It is a near focus (which means that the nearest object is at the very edge of the beginning of focus for the 85mm f1.8 Nikkor S lens. It was shot using a Nikon Z9 in focus shift mode. One pass at f 1.8 and one pass at f5.6, which is critical aperture for this lens. I use two white balance presets, cloudy and incandescent . Cloudy produced a warmer image incandescent a cooler image. I also shot set one stop unde. I then stacked the images in Photoshop (I used 20 out of the 75 I shot per) mixed this cocktail up, shaken not stirred ansd this is the outcome.

I apologize for being a little bit more intermittent that I would like with post processing and posting images. The Monsoons that have pummeled us with 4 trillion gallons of water, the equivalent of 12 inches of water distributed over the surface area of the state of California have had an effect on my studio. That and an dealing with the aftermath of incompetence of the contractor that built it have had me otherwise occupied.

This image is from March trip to Cuba, I originally processed this image in color, but something about it the roadmap of life that was /is etched on this man’s face is more black and white, not matter how colorful the experience he had to have had for those moments to be etched.

I needed a pause from dealing with soaked carpets and wet cardboard. This is the outcome of a few hours from the soup that is currently my studio.

I shot this image whilst on assignment for American Photo Magazine to shoot and write an article about the opening up of Myanmar. I shot this image 4;30am Nyaung Chaungtha along the Irrawadddy river. The plan was to travel up river during monsoon season to a remote village. The trip took three days. D3 auto Iso and the 28-300mm lens. This is the image in Chromatic Grayscale.

This is another from the review process of my server and and trying get to all the files I have decided to work on during the first edit but have never gotten to. Usually the amount of time I have to do any post on a gig is the flight back home and maybe there days after I hit stateside before the next adventure takes me. I decided to take this summer to try and catch up on images I have always wanted to process.

Image was post processed with Capture NXD, Photoshop CC 2017, Nik collection by Google and onOnesoftware. Converted with the Oz 2 Kansas BW conversion.

It appears that 2023 is, for me, the year of infrastructure. I have have had to readdress the water issues of my studio, which now appear to be able to withstand floods of biblical proportions. I have lost because of the epic flow of water a lot of “stuff” I had been putting off ridding myself of because…who knows. One of the things I am doing as the sheets of water pelt the state of California is up dating my NAS drives. I will have 256TB storage when this is all done. So rather than just move my pile of crap to a bigger container, as I transfer I am doing the digital dumpster dive to see what I have.

This image is one of those finds. I found it In the 2_DO folder of my 20123 trip to India. One of the coolest gigs I have ever done. I was asked to travel the country for two weeks with 12 Indians to show them how someone who is not from there sees there. What a blast we both had, me watching them see a world they walk by everyday for the first time and my group showing me what Indian culture and food was all about.

This image was from my first day in Mumbai at the festival for Genesh. Loud, colorful framed with people throwing brightly colored powder at each other and most importantly happy.

So yesterday I spent the day organizing 180TB of drive. Sorting through the 16TB of Myanmar images. Looking at the 2_DO folder.

there web two images, shot moments apart. I always wonder why makes on 1/125sec more decisive than the previous 124 fractions of a second. When did the one second begin, really or did it end?

The stage picture is exactly the same, the story told is so different. All in less than a half second.

I truly do fall in love a thousand times a day. Generally for 1/125 of a second. I do not believe in long exposures or long relationships.

From a kinder gentler time. I look forward to the day I can be taking like this again.

One of the greatest lessons I have ever learned was from Prof. Tad Z. Danielewski. Proffer Danielewski was considered to be one of the greatest acting teacher of all time. A man who, though I did not fully realize it at the time, was one of the greatest gifts the universe has provided me. The lesson was on how to hide in the camera. Over the years I have learned through a lot of trial and error, some efforts more successful than others, of to translate it from doing it to being able to photograph where people hide.

I am in the process of bringing my studio back on line and reprinting all of the images that were damaged in the monsoons. I created this image from a scan of a contact sheet and images of the Cuban ballet dancer Grettell Lastre Casuso. These dreams are the moments where she sees me but does not register I am photographing until the last capture. about a 3 second time frame.

I was on assignment for American Photo magazine (back when magazines existed...) This is in a region in Burma that non Burmese (and even then it is strictly limited) can no longer travel to.

This is the second shot of the sequence after she gave me the "scary laser stare of death by a tattooed faced woman" stare. You know the one where she looks right through me.

See explaining story below:

There is an old wives tale that the most beautiful women in South east Asia are from Burma specifically from the village I photographed this woman in. So hard core was this belief back in the day that the men of the village took to tattooing the faces of the women so no one would want to steal them. This was done with bamboo needle and ink at 13 years old with out any for of local anesthetic.

To get to this village this village we travelled 11 hours by car one one of the "Burma Super Highways" three hours by boat then 6 hours by car then 7 hour day boat during the monsoon season up the Irrawaddy river. Along the way we had to bail the boat out and head to shot when it dumped rain or we would sink ( this is also where I proved that a Nikon camera can indeed be pelted with 1.7 liters of water per hour....). All I know is that when we FINALLY arrived sat this village I was hell bent on photographing a tattooed face woman. I entered the village and it was completely empty. Only chickens and pigs running around.

As my angst, frustration and concern started to simmer to a boil of "@&$*%(!!" level expletives, I hear, flowing in the air around me, the is beautiful bell/bird song like voice in the most exquisite mix of births and brumes accented English say "Are you looking for me?" I spin around and all there is an empty village. the again I hear flowing in the air around me, the most beautiful voice " I cannot come down because I mail but you may photograph me if you would like to."

I would like to believe that my mother did not have any idiot children I said to my self "look up" and there above me had to be one of the most beautiful women I have ever seen. Stopped me dead in my tracks. Also keep in mind that the last white man to visit this village must have been during the British occupation. I eventually found my voice and said "yes I traveled here to photograph you" (I had no idea that I had travel here just to photograph this woman but it was as if she was notified via psychic link or carrier pigeon that I was on my way and on "official" American Photographer magazine business. She smiled, giggled a bit, I then lifted up my camera she made this face.

This from my most recent trip to Myanmar. I traveled 36 hours of flying (not including layovers) then 16 hours by 4 wheel drive to travel 58 miles in to the mountains of Nagaland to attend the New Years festival.

There are approximately 95 Naga Tribes in Nagaland. They are a hunter gatherer / slash and burn culture. Up to 1985 they were headhunters and and practiced cannibalism. Which would give me pause if I was told they want me over for lunch. The New year's festival is in part a celebration to comrade the ending of those practices and the embracing of a more spiritual path.

These are warrior babies form Kyal Yar village. They capture heart with terminal cuteness.

This is an image from my last trip to Cuba. This is an image of the dancer Indira. It is a joy to work with Cuban dancers.

One of the things I love about working with dancers is the complete connection between mind body and emotion. They move what they feel. It was a very gray day, threatening to rain. So the light was perfect widow light. I have developed the habit of shooing the Z9 in silent form working of film sets. This is an extremely powerful tool because the shutter click gives up the most that the camera has taken a picture. Without that click, that simple little sound, the subject frequently forgets that there is a camera taking a picture.

This from my last trip in December to Portugal. Talk about a dining room with a view. This image was captured from the second time I dined here. The restaurant is named Casa de cha da Boa Nova. I can say with absolute certainty that this was the finest meal and dining experience I have ever had in my life. The first I ate there it was at night and all I had was a view of absolutely blackness. The Restrant has three prix fixe venues, 6, 11 and 21 courses and two wine flights 6 and 11. I thought the 21 course was too much the 6 too small and the 11 well ok. After the 3rd course I made a reservation for lunch and the 21 courses and the 11 wine flight.

Somewhere in the middle of the meal I took this photograph. It was one of those time I was grateful for image stabilization, auto focus and matrix metering.

From my latest trip to Cuba

Light is the jewel of the photograph. I treat light as if it is a solid object and the subject interrupts my beautiful light. What would you rather see a line of laundry beautifully lit or the Taj Mahal poorly lit? It is always about the light. We write with light when we photograph.

I was photographing a dance rehearsal when the ballerina and the light from a skylight met for a moment and I was lucky enough t be focused in the right spot. I watched her interrupt the beautiful light.

I shot this in the Viñales valley in Cuba.

I got up 3 hours before the asscrack of dawn and walked up a mountain in white-out fog with my full camera kit that felt like the incline was between 85 and 89 degrees. It was not my most favorite of “hikes”. All because someone told someone who told someone who knew my fixer that there was this really cool view at sunrise.

It was was worth it. Just didn’t seem so as I was climbing and sliding at the time. Next time…. I’ll probably do it again and complain about it again then fall in love all over again.

I woke the morning I took this shot with the thermometer in the place we were all staying reading 3 degrees Celsius (37.4 degrees Ferinheight) I had put a bottle of water on the window sill when I went to bed and it was solid when I woke at 6am.

Really the only thing I like cold Is beer and ice cream and I really don't like beer. So down the dirt road we went to find warm tea and a breakfast of noodles and soup. This is the moment that took me as I walked down the road.

My dear friend Kyaw Swa Min said it best "we had crappy weather, crappy beer, crappy food a crappy car, crappy roads and a really cramped and crappy room but it was one of the best times we've have ever had"

I would do it again in s heartbeat.

This from my one of my trips in 2005 to Myanmar. Soooo.... I shot this in Yangon just before one of my journeys to the outskirts of the absolute middle of nowhere and traveling back to the 19th century.

Josef Sude, one of my strongest visual photographic influences, had a practice of after developing the negatives he shhot he'd wait six months before he would print the images from those negatives. His reasoning was "so that he could see the image with eyes a new." Which is why I do not delete anything. Hard drives are cheap. So on rainy days (usually on Sundays) I go back and look at the past for things I may have missed.

I hand held this image at a 1/15 of a second. So we know vibration reduction works.... and I must have been on my first cup of coffee.

Shot with the D200 enhanced color IR modification the 28-300mm Nikkor (AKA "The Street Sweeper") my when in doubt go to lens.

I find the older one gets the more your images are shot at eye level. I was sitting on the dance floor swapping lenses when the choreographer stopped the rehearsal to describe to the dancers what he wanted them to try for him. This is an image of resting dancer feet.

I am asked frequently when do yo know when an image should be black and white image? Simple when the color gets in the way of the gesture.

I love images where I a m captured bt a moment in which the subject of my image chooses to hide in my camera. I love images where I capture the space between moments. I basically fall in love about a 1000 times a day. usually for about a 125th of a sec. I really don't believe in long relationships or long exposures.

Life happens even when we have other plans. We start out with our plan A for life, but somehow we find ourselves live our plan who’s letter is much further down the alphabet,

As melancholy as witnessing those moments there is a poetry to it for those who catch a glimpse of them. Just like a fish does not know he is in the ocean he also does not see the outcome of the overwhelming sound of silence in the ocean of noise.

Once a day at 4:30pm the gates are opened to a small lake and the people from the surrounding area are allowed to gather water. At 5:30pm the gates are closed. he belief being that this lake has the best tasting water. No-one fights, no on cuts in line, no one sneaks in durning the day or at night. I just can't see that happening in my neighborhood of Silverlake.

I shot this image whilst on assignment for American Photo Magazine to shoot and write an article about the opening up of Myanmar. According to Jay Maisel light, gesture and color are three of the four key elements of any image. I shot this image just after sunrise in Kengtung village market. D3 auto Iso and the 28-300mm lens. This is the image in Chromatic Grayscale.

This is another from the review process of my server and and trying get to all the files I have decided to work on during the first edit but have never gotten to. Usually the amount of time I have to do any post on a gig is the flight back home and maybe there days after I hit stateside before the next adventure takes me. I decided to take this summer to try and catch up on images I have always wanted to process.

This image was captured with the Nikon Zf and the 50mm f/1.2 Nikkor. The Zf is the camera I grab when I have no idea what I am walking into and Nikkor optics are just a visual pleasure to look through wilst I shoot. Nobody does In focus to blur as well as Nikon does.

This image is from my most recent trip to Cuba.

I always get asked these four questions: Do you see in black and white, can you teach me how to see in black and white, how do you know when an image is supposed to be a black and white and how come your blacks and white images look better than my black and white images.

Then I heard and read a lot of noise about how it’s all about contrast, contrast light and dark and contrast. Or basically the person positing and exposing these thoughts does not really have a clue.

In the film days when you put black and white film in the camera you saw the image in color and the film recorded it in grayscale base off a specific tonal production curve unique to the flavor of film that was in the camera. SO every image was black and white.

So what makes an image a successful black and white? It comes down to the three core elements (according to Jay Maisel or the four key elements according to me, because I cannot leave well enough alone), Light, Gesture and Color (Jay’s) and time (mine). According to Jay Light and Color are obvious but it is Gesture that is the most important, Gesture that is the most telling.

SO the equation for when an image wants/needs to become a black and white is when the color of the image distracts from the gesture of the image.

For example this image, the colors a lovely, but the truly distract from the gesture of the dancers which is beautiful and timeless.

The point? I have never met an image did not know or tell me that it was wanting to be a black and white image. The gesture of the image will always let you know. As to the rest of it being light a nd dark and contrast contrast and more contrast? That really is the after thought and holds true for both color and black and white.

If you get too close, you’ll become poetry

From my three weeks in Namibia—

I shot 27525 captures. That is after pitching the Beverly out of focus ones and the ones where the camera decided to take a picture whilst I was walking.

I chose this one because I have been repeatedly been asked “how how close did you get?”

This close. About 12 feet. This is at 260mm on the 100-400mm S Nikkor. If I got any closer I would not become poetry, I’d be lunch.

The system in which I came up with to not have to bring a laptop and be able to back all my images up with my ipad. Worked swimmingly. I shot on Delkin black 850 & 150gb cards. Which is the key to all of this fast read and fast downloads. I brought three 4tb Sandisk Blade drives. I used the Lexar WorkflowGo2. I was very hesitant to buy anything Lexar. I have had less than stellar luck with their cards. That said the workflowGo did the job.

This is one of a bazillion Lion captures I have. I have images of Lions, Leopards, Cheetahs, Caracals, Elephants, Hippos, Rhinos, Water Buffalo, Wildebeests, two types of Baboons, two types of Zebra, Brown Hyenas, Wild Dogs, Warthogs, Oryx, Mongoose, Read Heart beast, Springbok, Sable, Eland, Black Faced Impala, Impala, Crocodiles, Kudo, Waterbuck, Dik-Dik (so I did take Dik-Dik pics), Steenbok,Scrub Hare, Rock Hyrax, Side Winder snakes, African Ground Squirrels, Cape Penguin and so many birds I can’t even begin to name them and those are just the animals I can remember.

AND to answer the next question YES I will be organizing a workshop there.

Sorry it’s been a minute since I last posted. Things in Los Angeles have been taking my attention away from posting and post processing my images.

With that said-

One of the core tenants of my work is this: Practice does not make perfect, a perfect practice makes perfect.You have to practice of practicing. Which is why I always am practicing at practicing.

The ultimate pursuit is the pursuit of attaining the Zen state of Shibumi- effortless perfection and elegance. A state of doing that is thoughtful thoughtless thought. Practice like you have never won and preform like you have never lost. Mastery is the variation of repetition over time.

I was taken by this image, as is true with all my images, as I was walking to a a performance rehearsal of the next ballet to be staged by the National Cuban Ballet. I this this empty practice room the space was filled with the ballerina. Her focus was so strong I felt it as I walked by and had to step back and let her take me to where she was.

Every issue of an image needs to be solved at moment of capture. I realized that the image of her needed to be in a space big enough to show how she filed it. So I took a second shot that showed the the left side of the rehearsal room. I don’t believe in cropping images. I shoot 99% of my images full frame.
