On a cold winter evening, the Rio Grande Ski Train waits at the Fraser, Colorado, station at dusk on a snowy January 3, 2004. Those warming heaters inside the shelter sure felt good while taking this photo! Soon, the train will depart for Winter Park to pick up a load of exhausted skiers ready to head back to Denver after a day on the slopes.
The Tonnara di Scopello dates back to 1200 and is one of the oldest in Sicily. The activity continued until 1984 and every year, on average, about 500 tuna were caught.
The tonnara rises in a magical inlet, framed by steep cliffs and bathed by clear waters. The stacks emerge from the sea a few meters from the shore and make this small gulf even more fascinating.
The tonnara is located in Sicily, in the western part, in the locality of Scopello.
Scopello is a small fraction of the Municipality of Castellammare del Golfo, in the province of Trapani, which has about 400 inhabitants.

What amazing light I saw this evening as we finished up work for the day and off I went to walk about and take in the sights. Couple of Dutch Botters sitting in the harbor caught my eye. One of those images that I can't decide between B&W or Color, happening a bit more lately.

Shot early in the morning at the Letaba River low water bridge.
The trademark white ring around the waterbucks’ hindquarters is used as a “follow me” sign. If one of the group spots a predator and runs, the rest know where to follow to avoid becoming dinner for one of the hungry cats.

Frauenkirche Dresden.... Built in the 18th century, the church was destroyed in the bombing of Dresden during World War II. The remaining ruins were left for 50 years as a war memorial, following decisions of local East German leaders. The church was rebuilt after the reunification of Germany, starting in 1994. The reconstruction of its exterior was completed in 2004, and the interior in 2005. The church was reconsecrated on 30 October 2005 with festive services lasting through the Protestant observance of Reformation Day on 31 October. The surrounding Neumarkt square with its many valuable baroque buildings was also reconstructed in 2004.

As you know I've been building up my photography kit over the last few weeks. This week's purchase was a Lee Filter Kit and Big Stopper. This is my first attempt with it; let me know what you think.

You might not expect to come upon a castle while visiting Spokane, but that is exactly what you will do if you visit the Spokane County courthouse. Most of us associate such architecture with romantic old castles in Europe, or perhaps something out of the world of Walt Disney or fairy tales. To find such a building in the center of a modern, growing regional hub city such as Spokane is a bit startling.
The courthouse is said to closely resemble two famous 16th century chateaux in the Loire Valley of France, the Chateau de Chambord, built in 1519 and the Chateau d'Azay Le Rideau built in 1516. Many architects through the years have commented on the masterly replica of a 16th century French Renaissance design, its fine lines of style and proportion with regard to the towers and turrets, the sculpture, iron and brickwork which excel in pattern and craftsmanship. Detailed exterior trim such as shell patterns with wreaths and festoons and decorative arches are a few of the outstanding features of its design. The beautiful center tower, now lighted at night, is a masterpiece of detail in itself.

Last Tuesday I started a small photo tour in the Eifel. In the valleys there was still a mist, which had to leave the sun more and more. It was similar to the snow that had fallen the night before. During the shooting it cleared up and the sun shone into the romantic Lieser Valley.

Newberry Volcano is a large active shield-shaped stratovolcano located about 20 miles (32 km) south of Bend, Oregon, United States, 35 miles (56 km) east of the major crest of the Cascade Range, within the Newberry National Volcanic Monument. Its highest point is Paulina Peak. The largest volcano in the Cascade Volcanic Arc, Newberry has an area of 1,200 square miles (3,100 km2) when its lava flows are taken into account. From north to south, the volcano has a length of 75 miles (121 km), with a width of 27 miles (43 km) and a total volume of approximately 120 cubic miles (500 km3). It was named for the geologist and surgeon John Strong Newberry, who explored central Oregon for the Pacific Railroad Surveys in 1855. The surrounding area has been inhabited by Native American populations for more than 10,000 years.
