Although on first impressions this looks to be a standard Series 111 109” military Land Rover, there is an important difference. The engine and running gear are in place but the back is packed with eleven aviation-type gel sealed batteries connected to produce 216V and there is an electric motor driving the PTO point on the gearbox.
The vehicle dates from 1975 but the conversion was carried out in 1993 at DERA Land Systems at Chertsey as a trials vehicle for use in Northern Ireland, the obvious attraction presumably being the potential for silent running.
Flicking a switch on the dash and engaging the PTO swaps power from petrol to electric. The brakes use an electric vacuum pump and drive is broken by a switch on the brake pedal pad. There is a rheostat on the throttle pedal which controls the current.
We understand that three of these were built and tested, the other two being Defender-based, but they never went into production. Silent drive except for the noise of the military tyres!

First Bus‘ ADL Enviro 400 EV demonstrator 38600 (FB74 ZEB) was on loan from First South Yorkshire to First Greater Glasgow recently to help out with the bus shortages in Glasgow due to structural failure that was found on around 30 electric buses that are owned by First Bus. 38600 was seen here at Castlemilk, Carmunock Road, which just finished a trip on Route 75 from Milton. 18/1/25
VDL introduced its new generation Citea battery-electric in 2023. I believe that the manufacturer's home city of Eindhoven was the first place anywhere to see this model in service, in its LF-122 form, although they are seemingly built in VDL's factory in Roeselare in Belgium. As is always the case with new-model battery-electrics, big promises are made about range. Here bus 2161 of Hermes is seen near Eindhoven Centraal Station while operating a 7 journey to Veldhoven.

This 1602, to all appearances the same of thousands of 02s that helped build BMW's success, is 100 % electric. It was unveiled at the Munich Olympic Games in the heart of Bavaria, BMW territory. The 1602 was in full running order using an ingenious system of interchangeable batteries. It was the first step on the road that led to today's i-BMW's.

On June 17, 2019, Gov. Inslee attended the ribbon-cutting ceremony for the first electric school bus in Washington at Franklin Pierce High School in Tacoma. Franklin Pierce Schools are a statewide leader in a new era of school transportation that could transform school bus fleets across Washington.

Renault exported many Dauphines to the USA where they met with great, but all too brief, success. Their modern light monocoque construction interested the Eureka Williams Co. manufacturer of electric engines, which launched a design study called Henney Kilowatt. It never reached full production as components were too expensive.

The aim of this 2,5 metre long concept car unveiled at the 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show was to transport 4 passengers. Electric power saved space and a simple tiller replaced the steering wheel. The windscreen was inclined in the opposite direction to the usual one providing a precious sensation of space in the 'blob'.
