I have finally managed to grab some decent shots of an experimental electric-drive battery powered carbon fibre bus that lives local to me.

RX15HSU is a 'Bristol Superlight' built by the Frazer-Nash Research company based in Farnborough, Hants. The bus was first registered on 28/08/2015 and I've been after a decent shot of it ever since!

Their concept bus is kitted out to B27D layout and weighs in at just 3.5 tonnes, its revenue weight listed as 4840kg. It carries a 1.0L engine which is used to recharge the lithium batteries and as such the bus is marketed as ultra low emission / zero emission capable.

I grabbed some shots of the bus when it was out on a demonstration run on 02/03/2017.

Photographed on its second week on the road is E022 'Ayva-Mai', which is one of four of the type carrying the "Clear blue sky thinking" branding between the decks. The light blue chosen in Coventry contrasts nicely with the Platinum style, two tone grey selected for Enviro 400EVs of National Express. There are now twenty nine BYD Alexander-Dennis Electric double deckers operating with the company in 2020 with hopefully more to follow in future years!

Volvo 7900E is seen here on London Road, Kilmarnock on Service 1 to Priestland.

Stagecoach West Scotland took delivery of Scotland’s first opportunity charged battery-electric buses in the form of six Volvo 7900e models in July 2021 after being granted £2m from SP Energy Networks’ Green Economy Fund (GEF) for five of these buses, the sixth bus and all associated charging infrastructure was fully financed by the operator.

The vehicles operate out of Stagecoach's Kilmarnock Depot on Service 1 which operates between Kilmarnock and Priestland.

Stagecoach West Scotland were awarded £2.7m from the second round of the Scottish Ultra Low Emission Bus Scheme towards 15 battery-electric single-deck BYD D8UR Alexander Dennis Enviro 200EV's and their associated infrastructure.

The first electric BYD Enviro 400EV double deckers entered service in Coventry on Sunday 30th August. The initial order for ten buses in the West Midlands city, follows an order of nineteen in Birmingham, which first saw service from July 2020.

Similar to their Birmingham counterparts, these ten carry four distinct branding artwork designs. The most colourful of which are E025 and 'Donna-Louise' illustrated here with "Bus travel doesn't cost the earth".

Advertisement identities are as follows:

"Clear blue sky thinking" - E020/021/022/023

"Power to the people of Coventry" - E024/028

"Bus travel that doesn't cost the earth" - E025/027

"A breath of fresh air for Coventry" - E026/29

A further Swiss city to operate the Hess Swisstrolley is Lausanne, which has a fleet in both two- and three-section form. They carry the operator's rather basic livery of white with restrained blue relief. Here bus 843 is seen at Place Chauderon while operating an 88 journey to Lausanne Blecherette.

The fastest electric car on the market

Elegant, electrically powered sports roadster by the American marque Baker, which at the time was one of the largest producers of electric city cars in the US. With this model Baker tried to make his electric cars look like the petrol-powered competition. The radiator however had no function and the batteries were located in the front under the ‘bonnet’. The floor-mounted dashboard was made up of one Volt and one Ampere gauge. The battery charger can also be seen here.

Walter Baker started working with electric motorcars as early as 1893 and set up his own company in 1899. Although he was successful initially, the popularity of the electric car waned due to the rapid development of the internal combustion engine. The invention of the electric starter, for example, made cranking a thing of the past. Baker halted the production of electric cars in 1916.

The Circulator network in Washington, DC is a collection of low-speed, urban services that charge the princely sum of $1 for a ride. Such operating characteristics leaves Circulator as an ideal landscape for battery-electric buses, and so quite a number of such Proterra models can be seen. Here is fleet number 3012, a BE40 model dating from 2017. It is running the Lincoln Memorial routes and is turning from Columbus Circle into Louisiana Avenue NW here. Behind is Washington Union Station.

Not brand new by any means as Nottingham City Transport took delivery of twelve of these Chinese buses back in October last year.

Due to the failure of the network distribution supplier to install cabling to deliver sufficient current to charge the vehicles, all twelve of them have been idle until two weeks ago when the busses entered into regular service after the electricity supply problem was rectified.

Over the last few year, San Francisco Municipal Railway (or 'Muni') replaced its whole 280-odd-strong trolleybus fleet with New Flyer products. The same marque has also come to dominate Muni's diesel-powered buses and thus the scene in San Francisco is now much less diverse than it was only a few years ago. The 40ft trolleybus model is denoted the XT40 by New Flyer, and here bus 5800 heads south along Castro Street about to cross Market Street on a 24-Divisadero journey. Some of the city's typical terrain and housing stock are in the background.

- Restoration inspired by the limited-edition ’Jogging’

- Attractively finished, with large sunroof and leather interior

- Can be registered in the Netherlands

A legend that was an inseparable part of the French automotive scene from the 1960s to the 1990s, Renault’s first front-wheel drive car, the Renault 4, introduced a rear tailgate, long-travel suspension and an excellent load capacity. In 2021, to celebrate the model’s 60th anniversary, the manufacturer had five cars converted to electric power.

It chose versions symbolising the model, which were completely restored by the staff at the Collection before being sent to EV Europe, a Dutch specialist which carried out the conversion, replacing the petrol engine by an electric motor and installing the batteries. The motor is directly connected to the gearbox, which is locked in third, with an electrical inverter providing reverse gear. A screen has been added on the left-hand side of the dashboard to display the information specific to the electric powertrain. The car produces about 30bhp and has a range of approximately 100km.

This Renault 4 has been rebuilt in the style of the ‘Jogging’ limited edition which came out in 1981 and was aimed at young buyers; only 5000 units were produced, and they are impossible to find nowadays. Finished in white with blue accents, it has a large blue sunroof and superb leather upholstery in the same colour. The tailgate has a ‘Renault 4, 60 Anniversary’ logo and the odometer is reading just over 1000km, doubtless the distance it has covered since being converted. The car can only be registered in the Netherlands. This car offers the ease of use of an EV and is sure to appeal to Renault 4 enthusiasts with a liking for its limited-edition models.

First Bus is the first of the large groups to take delivery of the Yutong U11DD battery-electric double-decker. Its West of England subsidiary put the first examples into service in mid-March from Weston-super-Mare depot, although others in corporate livery were received at Taunton depot at around the same time and many more will follow for Bristol and the First Essex operation.

Those at Weston are in the regional Westbus green livery. While not the most imaginative, its rollout will be an improvement on the situation for First's urban fleet in Bristol, which is a dreadful collection of a large number of liveries - many obsolete and/or from other parts of the country - and a mish-mash of route branding in which interest has evidently been lost. Some kind of consistency cannot come soon enough there, although the Weston operation with its Badgerline branding looks to be in a much better position.

Here 30024 (YK25 OJP) is seen in central Bristol working an X1 to Weston. It is not the only vehicle with First to have carried that fleet number; it was initially carried by a Leyland Olympian in the PMT fleet many years ago.

These vehicles, as with other Yutongs on order for First subsidiaries in England, are part-funded by the second round of the Zero Emission Bus Regional Areas scheme. Use of taxpayer subsidy for buses produced in China has proven controversial in some corners, with domestic builder Alexander Dennis having made its position clear on the matter. Nevertheless, Yutong products in both bus and coach have garnered a good reputation.

Apparently made Explore (#91, 10-Jul-2011)... Funny to think about that, since it sat on my hard drive since March and it very nearly got deleted while I was cleaning up the shots from the Geneva Motor Show. It's only yesterday that I saw that by reframing it I could make something out of it.

At this facility, photovoltaic (solar) cells supply the energy required to split water molecules into hydrogen and oxygen. The hydrogen is then stored in tanks and used to fill fuel cell powered buses. These buses have zero harmful emissions.

AC Transit operates the largest fleet of fuel cell-powered buses in the United States.
