The BMW E1 was showcased at the 1991 International Motor Show : it was the first fully fledged car of more recent times that was originally designed to run solely on electric power. Developed as a prototype by BMW Technik GmbH, the E1 demonstrated that it was possible to build a fully dedicated electric car. It also served as an innovation platform and provided valuable insights for the further development of electromobility.

Hydrogen fuel cell-electric buses are something of a white elephant in the UK, with many of these highly-expensive vehicles grossly under-employed due to difficulties in fuelling them. 20 Alexander Dennis Enviro400FCEV double-deckers in the Liverpool City Region are among those 'hangar queens', with the 10 placed with Arriva by owner the Liverpool City Region Combined Authority seeing sporadic service, and the other 10 with Stagecoach yet to carry passengers. Bus industry opinion now largely favours battery-electric over hydrogen, and indeed the Liverpool City Region is to see more electrics rather than an expansion of its hydrogen fleet. First was 1 Michael Rutter on 2012 Motoczysz Elpc riding for Team Segway Racing MotoCzysz he took 21minutes and 45.33 seconds to finish the course with an average speed of 104.056 mph which means he get a Silver replica and £10000 for being the first to do more than 100mph for the lap. He did 153.02 on the Sulby straight..... not bad for an electric bike!
Second was 3 John McGuinness riding a MUGEN Shinden for Team MUGEN he completed the course in 22 minutes 08.85sec, with an average speed of 102.215mph he gets a Silver replica.
Third was 2 Mark Miller on another 2012 Motoczysz Elpc also riding for Team Segway Racing MotoCzysz he too 22 minutes 23.97sec with an average speed of 101.065mph he gets a Silver replica.
It was disappointing to see that there were only 4 bikes which completed the course this year. Some didn't even start! Hopefully next year's will be better. Maybe one day they will be able to do more than one lap!

As would be expected in its home market, VDL is well represented among battery-electric bus fleets in the Netherlands. RET in Rotterdam operates a good number of the SLF-120 model, such as bus 1505, seen here at Centraal Station while operating a journey on route 33 to Meijersplein via the airport. Like one or two other battery-electric bus types that are descended from diesels, these have a 'shower cubicle' at the rear offside, although a new model Citea electric is now starting to enter service that may not have it. Whether any former Van Hool bus products are offered by VDL now it has purchased the former's coach and bus affairs remains to be seen.
