Each year the city of Oakland proclaims that there will be zero tolerance for illegal fireworks. Then each year on July 4th, there are nonstop illegal fireworks that rival professional displays. They are both beautiful and irritating, especially to those of us who have to try and sleep through them.
ZËRO
Le premier album « Joke box » est né des cendres de Bästard et Narcophony, deux anciens groupes dont faisaient partie ¾ des membres de Zëro. Le EP vinyle « Bobby Fischer » l'annonçait, « Diesel dead machine », second albu...m du groupe le confirme : Zëro accélère le rythme sans rien perdre de ses capacités à le perturber et à développer des arrangements d'une richesse rare. On sent que le groupe a tourné, l’énergie brute des concerts est ici restituée avec ferveur. Le son Zëro s’affirme.
Pas besoin de haute technologie pour bien faire. Ici, tout est fait comme il l’a toujours été, live et en groupe, entre rigueur et totale décontraction, le son étant leur seul motif de perfectionnisme et d’obstination. Il suffit de les voir en concert pour le comprendre. C’est sans doute là que le message de Zëro se révèle, approchant avec une totale liberté d’expression ce que le rock représente à leurs yeux: un métissage de cultures et d’influences où le punk des premiers Devo, le jazz d’un Sun Ra et le blues d’un Captain Beefheart ne sont pas étrangers mais complètement assimilés.
Il est clair que la musique de Zëro s’aventure plus dans des contrées inventives que dansles sentiers battus du rock à identité fixe. On y croise autant Jack Berrocal et Gene Vincent en « Drag Queen blues » sous extasy, que le krautrock de Can et Kraftwerk dans un « Luna Park » ludique où psychédelisme et harmoniques offrent un roller coaster cérébral et addictif. On y croisera également des Cramps ressuscités le temps d’un « Sick to the bones » écorché, des Battles en pleine poussée pour un « Viandox » improbable, tout comme un paquet d’autres freaks qui en marge de tout courant auront constamment réécrit avec singularité et intelligence le langage du rock.
Chaque titre s’évade du précédent, fuyant la routine et l’étiquette comme la peste, un sourire au coin des lèvres, une bonne boite à blague sous le bras. Les disques se dévoilent avec la malice d’une boite d’illusionniste, d’un vice sans fin où le plaisir et la surprise sont sans cesse renouvelés.

The Mitsubishi A6M Zero ("A" for fighter, 6th model, "M" for Mitsubishi) was a lightweight, carrier-based fighter aircraft employed by the Imperial Japanese Navy Air Service from 1940 to 1945. Its history mirrored the fortunes of Imperial Japan in World War II.
The Chance Vought F4U Corsair was an American fighter aircraft that saw service in World War II and the Korean War (and in isolated local conflicts). Goodyear-built Corsairs were designated FG and Brewster-built aircraft F3A. The Corsair served in some air forces until the 1960s, following the longest production run of any piston-engined fighter in history (1940 - 1953).
The Grumman F6F Hellcat was a fighter aircraft descended from the earlier F4F Wildcat, but was a completely new design sharing only a familial resemblance to the Wildcat. Some tagged it as "Wildcat's big brother" [1]. The Hellcat and the Vought F4U Corsair were the primary United States Navy carrier fighters in the second half of World War II.
The Hellcat proved to be the most successful aircraft in naval history, destroying 5,171 aircraft in service with the U.S. Navy and U.S. Marine Corps (5,163 in the Pacific and eight more during the invasion of Southern France), plus 52 with the Royal Navy's Fleet Air Arm during World War II.

COUNTDOWN TO ZERO is a stunning documentary about the escalating global nuclear arms crisis that premiered at Sundance Film Festival, was shown at TED Conference and recently screened at Cannes Film Festival. Produced by Academy Award winner Lawrence Bender (An Inconvenient Truth, Inglourious Basterds) and written and directed by Lucy Walker (The Devil's Playground, Blind Sight), COUNTDOWN TO ZERO features an array of important international experts and statesmen and makes a case for worldwide nuclear disarmament.
It was a filthy day today in Norwich, so I sheltered in this passageway after lunch and spent some quality time with the Zero. Talking of filthy, I really need to properly clean the glass of my scanner...apologies for the dust and general crud.

The Mitsubishi Zero was the primary Japanese Naval fighter in World War II. It was used in the attack on Pearl Harbor and in Kamikaze attacks near the end of the war. Allied pilots were astounded by its maneuverability, and it was very successful in combat until the Allies devised tactics to utilize their advantage in firepower and diving speed.
The A6M was given the Allied code name "Zeke," but was generally called Zero. Allied pilots referred to all Japanese fighters as Zeros, but the term is correctly applied only to the Mitsubishi A6M. The marking on this Zero are of the 261st Naval Air Corps, which operated in Saipan.
