Probably the most complex stencil I've cut with my little craft knife, but totally worth it. New tote made from remnants of a travel bag I sewed last year! Yay.
The pursuit of zero waste is so satisfying! I had a decent amount of remnant cotton canvas left from a travel bag I made last year, and after making this new tote with all its inside and outside pockets, I have two small scraps remaining. Almost zero waste! And then, there is the stencil, which was the negative space removed from a stencil project 2 years ago (or is that the positive space?). And the zipper, which has languished in a bin after being accidentally ordered in the wrong size about 7 years ago. And the lace hem tape, left over from the top I sewed last weekend. Almost was able to fashion straps from scrap cotton webbing, but I just couldn’t cobble enough together. Had to buy these lengths new. And the fabric paint for the stencil: a mix of three colors, left over from previous projects.
I e-mailed the FHC Curator Cory Graff and heard back:
Yeah, it’s fuel. The tanks are filled (usually) before every flight. Add a hot day and a few extra Gs during the turn and the fuel vents out ports in the wings. It’s much more dramatic looking than it is. Mechanics figure they had about a half gallon on each side come out during the test flights.
Yup, it was quite exciting to see that. Made me think there was smoke canisters being tested not a fuel dump...

I have decided I am going to work my way through the Waldorf Math curriculum by myself. I will be doing activities starting with First Grade and moving through the curriculum at a speed that works for me
The first block in a Waldorf math curriculum is a Quality of Numbers block. In this block a teacher would guide students through the exploration of "one-ness", "two-ness" and the qualities of numbers up to 7, 10 or 12. Students look for examples in their lives of things that come in that number and cosmic "meanings" of those numbers are brought to the student in an age appropriate manner. I chose to explore 0 through 10 and create a Main Lesson Book page for each number.
I meditated on zero, one and two while walking in Forest Park on Saturday and the image that came to mind for zero was a snag with a woodpecker hole in it. Not only is it Not a Tree, it is Not Even Not a Tree - it is a hole in the hole where a tree used to be.

This scene depicts Ensign Robert Duncan defeating Japanese Ace Warrant Officer Toshiyuki Sueda in his F-6F Hellcat on October 5 1943. Sueda lost only because he underestimated the Hellcat's speed capabilities. The F-6F would go on to become known as "The Zero Killer".

Added a little drybrush of grey to the black parts, and a dot of Molotov chrome to the thing on what I assume is the Morse key.
