Don't write in; I already know. But if you stand here and squint, this little slice of the Ouroboros sculpture looks like you're inside a torus. Of course you aren't! A torus is made by the full 360⁰ rotation of a circle — with other constraints too fiddly to mention.
But the radius rotating here — so we get the representation of the mythical Ouroboros and not a true torus — must reduce or else it wouldn't fly up itself…like the legendary hoop snake!
More impressive than the conception of this work of art is the technical excellence of its fabrication. Just the notion of the rolling, bending, cutting, fitting, welding, fettling, polishing — blah, blah blah — makes my head hurt. It's a marvel.
I think I can place this image in the “never before seen” category. The main subject here is a micrometeorite smaller than a grain of sand. On the sides, we see rough natural diamonds with impurities that cause them to fluoresce. The diamonds are bathed in ultraviolet light, causing them to emit visible light – the diamonds are the source of light for this photo. Light within diamonds illuminating stardust.
Taken with a Mitutoyo Plan APO 20x microscope objective, the full image required 575 frames to focus stack. The stacking was done with a continuous light source, so the best option here is to switch your camera to an electronic shutter. At these magnifications, the mechanical shutter shakes the camera enough to create blurry images when not using flash. The software used here is important: Helicon Focus. It’s by far the most efficient and powerful tool for extensive focus stacking, but more importantly: The company is based in Kharkiv, Ukraine. The situation in Ukraine is optimistic and dire simultaneously, with constant bombardment from Russian missiles aimed at civilian infrastructure. Putin’s Russia is attempting to destroy the electricity grid which would keep Ukrainians in the dark, and without heat. Such an act on its own could be considered a genocide by the Geneva Conventions, on top of the other genocidal war crimes already committed in 2022… and earlier. The true spirit of Ukraine was seen over the holidays, when those without power helped others in their community, uniting strangers for essential aid but also festive cheer.
The world continues to send aid to Ukraine. The first US “Patriot” missile defense system is reported to be en route to Ukraine. A month ago, the Bulgarian government formally announced that they are sending military equipment and weapons to support Ukraine. Weapons manufacturers around the world are making ammunition as quickly as possible to replenish stockpiles from those that have given the Ukrainian military everything they could. The “war machine” around the planet is in motion.
It feels like the world is watching from the sidelines, with the goal of destroying Russia while simultaneously being weary of China. The goal should be for Ukraine to win, but to offer too much support too quickly would possibly cause Russia to back away with a massive military still intact… or use the unthinkably devastating weapons. The goal seems to be wearing down the Russian forces until there is nothing left, while cruise missiles impact on homes and hotels. Innocent lives are lost in the process.
Sanctions appear to be working, but Russian weapons are still being built. Cruise missiles recently launched at Ukrainian civilian targets can be traced to manufacturing dates in September 2022. Drones continue to arrive from Iran, though thankfully they have been largely ineffective on the battlefield and are shot out of the sky. Rumours of weapons shipments from North Korea are gaining credibility. Weapons alone cannot win a war, and Russia is running very low on its most important asset: trained soldiers.
The losses continue in huge numbers, with over 700 Russian soldiers killed in action every day. Many of these men have almost no training, and are being sent to areas such as Bakhmut where the Ukrainian forces decimate wave after wave of frontal attacks, losing no ground in the process.
Soon, the fields will be frozen. New territory will be liberated by the Ukrainian people. I sincerely hope that when the front line is broken once again, the Russian efforts will dissolve along with their current government. Some sources suggest that Putin has a plan to escape to Venezuela if his government collapses, although such things are impossible to verify. This winter will be the most important phase of this global conflict.
Do you sit back and watch? Most of us do. This is a reminder that you can do something to help. Write to your politicians and say that you’d rather Ukraine win swiftly at this point, since Russia is no longer a threat to the West. You can create artwork, you can donate money, and you can vote with your wallet. Personally, I now avoid buying anything from a company that still operates in Russia. Though I didn't get to take a photograph of Lisa Ko and Thrity Umrigar, I wanted to talk about how much I enjoyed seeing them at Printer's Row Lit Fest. I can appreciate the sentiment that the sign expresses here. People of color who are artists, authors, musicians and create their own unique space in the universe don't need the approval or acceptance like white people like me or others. However, as someone who is a white woman, I greatly appreciate reading diverse perspectives and a sense of life long learning and I think, in order to acknowledge the full human story, we need to realize that we can't limit that story in any way. It should come as no surprise that women have a difficult time getting published and, if you are an immigrant or a minority, without connections and money especially, it is next to impossible. So, we must support these incredible voices. It's in our best interest as humans.
For the record, I wasn't able to take photographs of either Lisa Ko or Thirty Umrigar because they were speaking in small classrooms and I'm not the type of person to break out a huge camera and disrupt the author or the readers there to admire them.
But, I did want to write about them and support their work. I read about 130 books each year and I really want to support authors who are both female and who are Jewish, Asian, African American, Palestinian, Latina, Native American, Middle Eastern-I love reading all kinds of perspectives. Here's a list I created of contemporary American female authors I like (some were not born in America but have citizenship now and/or have been living here for many years). (I also love reading different books from women who are not American citizens) Please feel free to add your own suggestions! I am always looking for more authors to discover!
I also wanted to share how much I loved something that Thrity Umrigar said about how sharing the human story and that need is something all humans have in common and unites us all.

No one knows the suffering we old folks went through during our school days. To write papers for English class we didn’t have cell phones, computers or Google to help our plagiarizing efforts.
We normally had to trudge to the library and either the old fashioned wooden computer known back then as a card catalog file that consisted of a large wooden structure with many drawers. The drawers were aligned alphabetically and filled with tons of index cards with a rod running through the top to keep them in order and to discourage lazy teenage boys from absconding with them rather than copying down the information.
Each card had a subject title and listed where publications on that subject might be found in the library. Once you wrote that info down on a slip of paper you would stroll through the library hoping your knowledge of the Dewey Decimal system was good enough to locate the book or magazine you needed.
If your family was well-enough off, you might have a set of encyclopedias at home, a result of a smooth-talking salesman who convinced your parents this would give you an edge on your classmates and help prepare you for life.
The top (and most expensive) encyclopedia back then was the Britannica brand. It was more detailed and scientific and I always suspected it was the choice of my classmates who went on to become doctors or lawyers rather than the rest of us who had no clue about a life career in high school.
The Britannica now easily accessible (and free!) online says this about God’s design for a lot of the wildlife kingdom that has helped preserve them from predators through the ages. The encyclopedia does not use the term God or Intelligent Design as that would not be politically correct but many of us know who to credit:
“Sexual Dimorphism, the differences in appearance between males and females of the same species, such as in color, shape, size, and structure, that are caused by the inheritance of one or the other sexual pattern in the genetic material.”
This female red-winged blackbird is a good example of this design as its coloring allows her to be much more hidden from predators when she nests and then helps bring up her young.

Main story
There are two reasons why a person faces the sea.
One # to enjoy a slice of shine in the sea like children bubbling over in the beach.
The other # to brush the dust of memory like an old man who misses old days # staring at the shine
quietly.
Those lead to only one meaning though they do not seem to overlap. It’s a rebirth.
I face myself to change tomorrow # a vague day into something certain.
That is the meaning of a rebirth.
I had a very sweet girlfriend when I was 18.
After she left # I knew the meaning of gentleness for the first time and also a true pain of loss. After
she left # how many times did I depend too much on her # doubt her # envy her and keep on telling lies
until I realized it is love?
I wonder whether a nobody like me could have given something to her who was struggling in the
daily life in those days. Giving something is arrogant conceit. It is nothing but self-satisfaction.
I had been thinking about such a thing.
However # I guess what she saw in me was because I had nothing. That‘s why she tried to see
something in me. Perhaps she found a slight possibility in me # a guy filled with ambiguous # unstable
tomorrow. But I wasted days depending too much on her gentleness.
Now I finally can convey how I felt in those days when we met.

あらすじ
大学を目指している北見ケイは、SNS上で、6歳年上のイベントコンパニオン、上村香織に出会う。
上京してきた香織の夢は、有名なアーティストの友達になるためだ。
そのためにはラジオ局のプロデューサー、大沢亮の存在が必要だった。
大沢は、ラジオの生放送中、香織へ語りかける。
「僕には妻子がある。しかし、僕は君に会いたいと思っている」
ケイの同級生で、彼を想っている三條里香は、香織の動向を探っていた。。。。。
本編
人が海へ向かう理由には、二つある。
ひとつは、波打ち際ではしゃぐ子供のように、今の瞬間の海の輝きを楽しむこと。
もうひとつは、その輝きを静かに見据えて、過ぎ去った日々を懐かしむ老人のように記憶の埃を払うこと。
二つは重なり合わないようではあるけれども、たったひとつの意味しか生まない。
再生だ。
明日っていう、曖昧な日を確実なものへと変えてゆくために、自分の存在に向き合う。
それが再生の意味だ。
十八歳だった僕には大切な人がいた。

あらすじ
大学を目指している北見ケイは、SNS上で、6歳年上のイベントコンパニオン、上村香織に出会う。
上京してきた香織の夢は、有名なアーティストの友達になるためだ。
そのためにはラジオ局のプロデューサー、大沢亮の存在が必要だった。
大沢は、ラジオの生放送中、香織へ語りかける。
「僕には妻子がある。しかし、僕は君に会いたいと思っている」
ケイの同級生で、彼を想っている三條里香は、香織の動向を探っていた。。。。。
本編
人が海へ向かう理由には、二つある。
ひとつは、波打ち際ではしゃぐ子供のように、今の瞬間の海の輝きを楽しむこと。
もうひとつは、その輝きを静かに見据えて、過ぎ去った日々を懐かしむ老人のように記憶の埃を払うこと。
二つは重なり合わないようではあるけれども、たったひとつの意味しか生まない。
再生だ。
明日っていう、曖昧な日を確実なものへと変えてゆくために、自分の存在に向き合う。
それが再生の意味だ。
十八歳だった僕には大切な人がいた。

The city of Sarajevo - BOSNIA, as we know it today was founded by the Ottoman Empire in the 1450s upon conquering the region, with 1461 typically used as the city’s founding date. It quickly grew into the largest city in the region. In the early 16th century, Jewish refugees from Andalusia settled in Sarajevo. They were descendants of the Sephardic Jews expelled in 1492 from Spain. For the first time in its history, Sarajevo was the city of four religions (Islam, Judaism, and Christianity - Eastern Orthodox as well as Roman Catholic). The city's Jewish population made note of this, naming Sarajevo "Jerusalem of Europe"
The Old Sephardic Jewish Cemetery of Sarajevo is one of the most famed Sephardic burial grounds in the world. Founded in 1630, when Rabbi Samuel Baruch rented the land, it is the oldest intact burial ground of any religious group in Sarajevo and is known for its age and beauty. The cemetery is entered through a triple arched gateway (> see the photograph). The chief glory of the cemetery are the gravestones, erected in a style found nowhere else expect Spain. The unusually shaped tombstones are inscribed in Hebrew and Ladino (Judeo-Spanish) with epigraphs written in poetic form.
In her guidebook Jewish Heritage Travel, Ruth Ellen Gruber writes: "[The] big, slightly rounded blocks with Hebrew inscriptions on one face, thrust out of the ground on the hillside like miniature pillboxes, making an eerie, unforgettable site." The form of the tombstones is unique in Europe: large, rounded in shape and lying horizontally, often set into the hillside. They were quarried in a stone-pit near the cemetery and carried to the site. Most are almost identical in size and form, giving the hillside a patterned look. Only the gravestones of prominent rabbis and scholars were larger or more lavish.

Main story
There are two reasons why a person faces the sea.

I had a very sweet girlfriend when I was 18.
After she left, I knew the meaning of gentleness for the first time and also a true pain of loss. After
she left, how many times did I depend too much on her, doubt her, envy her and keep on telling lies
until I realized it is love?
I wonder whether a nobody like me could have given something to her who was struggling in the
daily life in those days. Giving something is arrogant conceit. It is nothing but self-satisfaction.
I had been thinking about such a thing.
However, I guess what she saw in me was because I had nothing. That‘s why she tried to see
something in me. Perhaps she found a slight possibility in me, a guy filled with ambiguous, unstable
tomorrow. But I wasted days depending too much on her gentleness.
Now I finally can convey how I felt in those days when we met.

あらすじ
大学を目指している北見ケイは、SNS上で、6歳年上のイベントコンパニオン、上村香織に出会う。
上京してきた香織の夢は、有名なアーティストの友達になるためだ。
そのためにはラジオ局のプロデューサー、大沢亮の存在が必要だった。
大沢は、ラジオの生放送中、香織へ語りかける。
「僕には妻子がある。しかし、僕は君に会いたいと思っている」
ケイの同級生で、彼を想っている三條里香は、香織の動向を探っていた。。。。。
本編
人が海へ向かう理由には、二つある。
ひとつは、波打ち際ではしゃぐ子供のように、今の瞬間の海の輝きを楽しむこと。
もうひとつは、その輝きを静かに見据えて、過ぎ去った日々を懐かしむ老人のように記憶の埃を払うこと。
二つは重なり合わないようではあるけれども、たったひとつの意味しか生まない。
再生だ。
明日っていう、曖昧な日を確実なものへと変えてゆくために、自分の存在に向き合う。
それが再生の意味だ。
十八歳だった僕には大切な人がいた。
