*Young Joseph has come across his fathers' journal hidden away in the attic and adopted it as his own to fill the blank pages. so the boy flipped the book over and started to write his name and the date in a childish scrawl filled with spelling errors and lines of writing that slopes off any way they like on the blank pages at the back of the book until his nanny took over and wrote down something of an edited version of the child's story .*

Dear Diary... I mean Journal. My name is Joseph William Elliot Harnett, and I am 5 years old, It is the 20th of December 1897.

This is a new book to go with our new house even though it isn't new. The book used to belong to my daddy William. It was his journal when I was a baby, but there are not many pages written on, but there were lots ripped out right at the front. Daddy must have got cross with his pencil or wrote the wrong thing a lot I think, but I didn't scribble out his words even if I can't read them very well, My mummy would be upset if I did that, so I turned the book around and upside down, so the back cover is the front now.

I never wrote a diary... Journal before. It feels funny writing a letter that I won't send.

Our old house was in New York, but mummy and I moved to Arizona with my new step-daddy Jerimiah because he quit his job at the big bank in the city and went to find another job in Tombstone I think he works for lots of little banks now.

We left New York last month and travelled all the way here on the train then the stagecoach. All our stuff was already at the house when we got here. Daddy Jerimiah has been here for ages already making sure the house was nice for us. He called it setting up roots. A bit like a tree.

Our new house is huge and very red, and even though it has all our stuff, I'm not sure I like it very much. Our old house was big, but it would be so small next to the red one!

Stepdaddy says I will get used to it, but I don't think I want to. I miss our old house; I lived there my whole life. Daddy William died there too when I was a baby, I don't remember him, but Lucy who used to be my nanny before we moved out here said I am just like he was when he was little. Lucy didn't want to come to tombstone so she and Mr Oliver, the cab driver, went back to work for my Nana and grandfather Harnett at their house. I never liked to visit their home or spend the night it was creepy there. Last year I stayed over because Mummy and Daddy Jerimiah got married.

Mummy says she doesn't think we will go back to New York any time soon because it is a long way, but mummy is still going to write to Nana Harnett and Lucy and Grandma and Grandpa Cole, and I promised I would write too even if my writing's tricky to read sometimes.

Stepdaddy wants me to go outside more sense we aren't in the city anymore. I heard him and mummy talking about my lungs since we got here but I don't know why there's anything wrong with them I'm never poorly. I don't want to go outside because of the snow, and it's so cold that I have extra clothes on! I thought Arizona was meant to be hot.

I did make a snowman today though, and I borrowed a hat from the attic for him to wear. I found it when I saw the book. It might have been Williams too, but mummy hasn't said anything about it, but I think I am going to go and rescue it from the garden before it snows again.

It was nice to meet you, Mr Journal.

Waggoner Ranch for sale by The Old Texan

It’s a Texas-sized story that Hollywood could never write, yet this story is destined for the history books. The iconic Waggoner Ranch will be sold.

In 1866, when Dan Waggoner began branding his livestock with three reversed D’s, he was solving a problem. Reversing the D’s made the brand hard for rustlers to alter. Little did he know that the Waggoner brand would leave the same indelible mark on Texas history.

Today, the three D’s signify the legend and the legacy of the W.T. Waggoner Ranch, the largest ranch “under one fence” in the United States. For the first-time ever, the 510,000-acre Waggoner Ranch will be offered to the open market for sale internationally.

Dan Waggoner came to Texas from Tennessee in the mid-1840s. He was a teenager when the family put down roots in Hopkins County.

In 1850, two years after his father died, Dan bought six horses and 242 head of Longhorns, which he located on Denton Creek in Wise County. A year later, he increased his herd and bought 15,000 acres near Cactus Hill, about 18 miles west of the frontier town of Decatur. Dan prospered.

Dan’s son, W.T., better known as Tom, got involved in the ranch as a teenager. When he was just 14, Tom said, “I want to run the most cattle, breed the best horses and work harder than anyone.” In 1869, when Tom was 17, his father made him a full partner.

Tom, Dan and a few select hands, trailed a herd from the Little Wichita to Kansas, a venture that netted them $55,000. Dan invested in more Longhorns at $8/head and more land. In the late 1800s, in the area just south of the Red River, North Texas was stricken with one of its periodic droughts. Settlers were abandoning their smaller farms and ranches and moving to more forgiving climates. To meet the growing demands of their booming cattle operation, the Waggoners began to buy large amounts of land along the Pease River, much of it for less than $1 per acre at tax sales.

Dan died in 1903, giving full reins of the Waggoner Ranch to Tom. He was only 27

This lens conversion was a total giant bitch.

I was intending to do a write up on how I did it but I made so many mistakes that it woulda been a "what not to do" guide.

I essentially followed Georg P.'s guide: took off the old manual focus SR mount and mount spacer and subsituted the chipped M42=>α mount adapter, with holes i had to drill myself (mistakes there), and also countersunk holes (more mistakes) along with self created mount spacers (a few trial and errors). The spacers, shown above in blue, are actually 6 plastic disposable plates (bought from local loblaw grocery store for about 10 for $4). They were thin enough to cut in a customized shape (circles with a doughnut hole in the middle), hopefully durable as well. However, since there were so many layers, they didn't necessarily fit perfectly (wrinkles when compressed with the mount screws). Ohwell, it works for now (2 weeks later, no probs)

I think I read that it only takes about 45 minutes to convert. I wasn't racing, but it took me all night to. I misaligned the drill holes, I didn't know what sized drill bit to countersink the screws with and I misaligned the aperature ring link.

Thanks to Arkku, Georg P, and Mr. Hotwire for guidance and Canadian Tire and Home Depot for their precision screw drivers, table top drill presses and generous return policies.

Main story

There are two reasons why a person faces the sea.

One to enjoy a slice of shine in the sea like children bubbling over in the beach.

The other to brush the dust of memory like an old man who misses old days staring at the shine

quietly.

Those lead to only one meaning though they do not seem to overlap. It’s a rebirth.

I face myself to change tomorrow a vague day into something certain.

That is the meaning of a rebirth.

I had a very sweet girlfriend when I was 18.

After she left I knew the meaning of gentleness for the first time and also a true pain of loss. After

she left # how many times did I depend too much on her # doubt her # envy her and keep on telling lies

until I realized it is love?

I wonder whether a nobody like me could have given something to her who was struggling in the

daily life in those days. Giving something is arrogant conceit. It is nothing but self-satisfaction.

I had been thinking about such a thing.

However I guess what she saw in me was because I had nothing. That‘s why she tried to see

something in me. Perhaps she found a slight possibility in me # a guy filled with ambiguous unstable

tomorrow. But I wasted days depending too much on her gentleness.

Now I finally can convey how I felt in those days when we met.

　あらすじ

　大学を目指している北見ケイは、SNS上で、6歳年上のイベントコンパニオン、上村香織に出会う。

　上京してきた香織の夢は、有名なアーティストの友達になるためだ。

　そのためにはラジオ局のプロデューサー、大沢亮の存在が必要だった。

　大沢は、ラジオの生放送中、香織へ語りかける。

　「僕には妻子がある。しかし、僕は君に会いたいと思っている」

　ケイの同級生で、彼を想っている三條里香は、香織の動向を探っていた。。。。。

本編

人が海へ向かう理由には、二つある。

　ひとつは、波打ち際ではしゃぐ子供のように、今の瞬間の海の輝きを楽しむこと。

　もうひとつは、その輝きを静かに見据えて、過ぎ去った日々を懐かしむ老人のように記憶の埃を払うこと。

　二つは重なり合わないようではあるけれども、たったひとつの意味しか生まない。

　再生だ。

　明日っていう、曖昧な日を確実なものへと変えてゆくために、自分の存在に向き合う。

　それが再生の意味だ。

　十八歳だった僕には大切な人がいた。

１　それまでの写真展。自分は行きたいと思ったか？

３　原宿デザインフェスタで個展を開くまでに、毎月ひとつの作品を展示することにチャレンジ。

今後、僕は、” Lot No.402_ ”を主催します。

このロットナンバーは、眠っていたレオナルドダヴィンチの作品がオークションにかけらた際に付されたものです。

作品にはサインなどがいっさい記されていなかったため、彼の作品だと断定できませんでした。

しかし、様々な鑑定の結果、陽の光を浴びました。

誰にも気づかれない作品。肩書がなくとも静かに語りかける作品。

僕はこれから様々な形で、多くの皆様に提供できるよう努めてゆきます。

In support of the USPS, got out my Retro 51 Postmaster fountain pens. One is a cherry blossom postage stamp Postmaster fountain pen from Fahrney's I found on Ebay. Other is the basic Retro 51 Postmaster fountain pen with random postage stamps on the body. Pile of collage postcards, and " Register and Vote" postage stamp.

"L’Ecume des Jours" is actually the title of a French novel by Boris Vian (It has been translated several times into English, under different titles. Stanley Chapman's translation was titled "Froth on the Daydream"; Brian Harper's was titled "Mood Indigo, Foam of the Daze").
