On June 3, 1841, Auguste Pervillé (?-1868), plant collector for the Museum of Natural History in Paris, from the 'Île de Bourbon' (today Réunion) writes a rather plaintive report to the grand administrator of the Museum. He's too low on funds and is just scraping by. Moreover of the eight months he's just spent collecting in Madagascar he was taken ill and could work only three. But he appears to be steady on the job. And indeed he did a lot of 'economic', agrarian work while he was at it. In Ambongo, southern Madagascar - where he also collected our plant - he found a particularly large coffee plant. If you search around a bit on 'the net' you'll be able to read that letter for yourself. Fascinating! For the rest, little is known of what must have been an exciting life of intrepid travel. In his first scientifc description of this Flaming Beauty, Henri Ernest Baillon (1827-1895) refers (1878) to Pervillé's find and adds that in the local language it's called 'Kirondron'; hence the specific name. It's become naturalised in the Tropics and graces KLCC Park.

Hace unos días nuestra querida Paty nos dijo adiós. Tuvo una vida muy feliz con nosotros y nosotros con ella. ¡Siempre fue una más en la familia y sin duda la más mimada! I thought for a long time whether I should write this now or just keep it to myself. Because today is not about me at all. But it's been bothering me for days.

And as sorry as I am, it's not about you either.

Today belongs to a little boy who was not allowed to blossom like this winter aconite does.

I already know his story, which is far too short, even though I will be able to meet him for the first time in a few hours.

Because today is the first time that I am photographing an angle baby. Something I never thought I was capable of. And yet my things are ready to go.

And so I want to dedicate this flower solely to this boy whose name I don't even know. The boy and of course his family, who now have to try to deal with this situation.

Ich habe lange überlegt, ob ich das jetzt schreibe oder einfach für mich behalte. Denn heute geht es so garnicht um mich. Doch es beschäftigt mich bereits seit Tagen.

Und so leid es mir tut, es geht auch nicht um Euch.

Der heutige Tag gehört einem kleinen Jungen, dem es nicht vergönnt war zu erblühen, wie dieser Winterling es tut.

Ich kenne bereits seine viel zu kurze seine Geschichte auch wenn ich ihm in wenigen Stunden das erste Mal gegenüber stehen darf.

Denn heute ist es das erste Mal, dass ich ein Sternenkind fotografiere. Etwas, von dem ich nie glaubte dazu in der Lage zu sein. Und doch stehen meine Sachen bereit zum Aufbruch.

Und so möchte ich diese Blume einzig allein diesem Jungen widmen, dessen Namen ich nicht einmal kenne. Dem Jungen und natürlich seiner Familie, die nun versuchen muss, mit dieser Situation umzugehen..

I could write something about life's twists and turns and that what is most important is the journey itself rather than the destination we aim for; but looking at that road all I wish I had at the time is a mountain bike.

This beautiful desert plant from Mexico was first described scientifically by William Jackson Hooker (1785-1865) in 1856. It had been long neglected - more than half a century - at the Kew Gardens, as Hooker writes, and had come into their possesion through the good offices of Jacques Philippe Martin Cels (1740-1806) of Paris, self-taught botanist who during the French Revolution had lost his job as a tax collector.

It was 'rediscovered' by Charles Christopher Parry (1823-1890), a botanist and mountaineer, and Edward Palmer (1829-1911) during an expedition into Mexico in San Luis Potosi. Their herbarium specimen of 1878 is still extant. You can see a picture of it on the Tropicos website. But live is always better! Here it is in Amsterdam's fine Hortus Botanicus.

And I had to drive 20 miles to Mt. Spokane to find it !! Then a Park Ranger ( a nice guy by the way ) threw me out. I have a Discover Pass but apparently that isn't good enough when the snow flies. Ya gotta have a snow park pass then. I felt like asking, " And if it was clear when I came up but began to snow after I arrived could you write me a ticket? "

I was home early yesterday and decided to sit down and write out my Christmas cards - more words! Although I love the written word; when it comes to me actually physically writing I am atrocious at it. Friends and family always have difficulty deciphering my dreadful handwriting and these days with e-mail and smart phones there is rarely the need to use a pen so it has become even more appalling. Kaiser could see I was struggling and decided to lend a hand.
