All of the photos in this album are “originals” from the 3-month period that my family spent in Denver from 1947-50 — i.e., the period before I lived in Omaha, Riverside, Roswell, Ft. Worth and a separate stay in Denver in 1951-53 (which you may have seen already in my Flickr archives).
Before I get into the details, let me make a strong request — if you’re looking at these photos, and if you are getting any enjoyment at all of this brief look at some mundane Americana from 65+ years ago: find a similar episode in your own life, and write it down. Gather the pictures, clean them up, and upload them somewhere on the Internet where they can be found. Trust me: there will come a day when the only person on the planet who actually experienced those events is you. Your own memories may be fuzzy and incomplete; but they will be invaluable to your friends and family members, and to many generations of your descendants. (Actually, I should listen to my own advice: unlike my subsequent visits to Roswell, Riverside, and Omaha I did not even track this early home down, let alone take any photos.)
So, what do I remember about the 3 early-childhood years that I spent in Denver? Since I was only 3 years old when we first moved there, the simple answer is: hardly anything. Here are the few random memories that I can dredge up:
1. I don’t think my Dad had even seen the ocean as a boy, but that didn’t stop him from enlisting in the Navy a while after he graduated from high school (there weren’t many other jobs on the Utah-Colorado border in those Depression-era days). He got sent out to the Pacific on some kind of naval vessel … and as it turned out, his ship was behind schedule getting back to home port in Hawaii on the evening of December 6, 1941. The submarine nets into Oahu harbor had been drawn closed, and his ship had to anchor outside … which helps explain why his ship didn’t end up at the bottom of the harbor the next morning.
2. Fifty years later, on December 7, 1991, I happened to be in a big park in downtown Tokyo, surrounded by thousands of young Japanese citizens, cheering as they waved their red-and-white national flags back and forth — waiting for a glimpse of the new Japanese empress, who was being presented to the public for the first time after her wedding. I heard someone near me speaking in English, so I asked him if he thought there was anything special about the 50th anniversary of Pearl Harbor Day. He was polite, but he was also puzzled and confused: he had never heard the phrase before.
3. But I digress … Dad eventually got back to the U.S. and left the Navy in 1947 while stationed in Washington, DC. Like so many of his generation, he decided to go to college, with most expenses paid for by the G.I. Bill. He managed to get into Denver University, and he went on ahead of my mother and me. I vaguely remember that we took the train all the way out there. (I probably don’t remember it at all; but my mother repeatedly told me about some strange man grabbing me out of her arms, and dashing off to the restroom on the train … all I know is that we arrived in Denver safely.)
4. We lived in an old form of military housing, known as Quonset Huts, at the edge of the D.U. campus, and I had a tiny bedroom to myself. I have only a few memories of the place: during the brutally-cold winters, Dad would use a garden hose to fill the tiny patch of grass outside the front door with a sheet of water … which froze, and provided the neighborhood kids with a place to ice-skate.
5. Though it wasn’t a hardship, I do remember that we had relatively little money for food. My grandparents still lived out near the Utah-Colorado border (just south of the small town of Vernal), and once a week they would send a dozen fresh eggs to us, packed in a carefully padded wooden box. We also made our own ice cream, and I’ll never forget the time Dad used some food-coloring to make blue ice-cream. I had no idea that ice cream could be any color other than brown (chocolate) or white (vanilla).
6. During our last year in Denver, I attended kindergarten. I was allowed to walk to school, which felt like it was miles away, across several interstate highways. But there were no Interstates at the time, and it was probably just a two-lane street a few blocks away…
7. At Christmas and a few other times of the year, we drove from Denver to spend the holidays with my grandparents. Not only were there no Interstate highways in those days, but there were also no ski resorts: no Vail, no Aspen. I think we drove on the old highway U.S. 40, and we went through a mountain pass (Rabbit Ear pass?) that was always snow-filled, bitter-cold, and dangerous in the winter. Invariably, Dad had to stop to put tire-chains on the car, a process that entailed much cursing and yelling. But we always got there.
8. Dad went to school 12 months of each year, and got a B.S. in Electrical Engineering after just 3 years, in June of 1950. I was allowed to wear his graduation cape and gown for a few minutes, and I snuck a paper airplane into the huge gymnasium where friends and families gathered to watch the graduation ceremony. We were way in the back, way up high; and I was convinced that my airplane would sail all the way across the gym, if only I could throw it. If only, if only … but I didn’t.
9. Dad must have gotten a job (back in Glen Oaks, NY) right away, and their lease/rental of the Quonset Hut must have ended at about the same time. I mention that only because he drove back East alone, leaving me and my very pregnant mother behind. We lived in a tiny apartment at an old Air Force base at the edge of Denver (Buckley Field?) until July, when it was time for my mother to head to the hospital and deliver my sister, Patrice. Meanwhile, I was picked up by Dad’s older brother, and driven all the way out to Utah to spend a week with my grandparents … before everyone reconnected in Denver, and we took an airplane flight back East.
10. There is probably more … but that’s all I can remember at this point...

There are two reasons why a person faces the sea.
One, to enjoy a slice of shine in the sea like children bubbling over in the beach.
The other, to brush the dust of memory like an old man who misses old days, staring at the shine
quietly.
Those lead to only one meaning though they do not seem to overlap. It’s a rebirth.
I face myself to change tomorrow, a vague day into something certain.
That is the meaning of a rebirth.
I had a very sweet girlfriend when I was 18.
After she left, I knew the meaning of gentleness for the first time and also a true pain of loss. After
she left, how many times did I depend too much on her, doubt her, envy her and keep on telling lies
until I realized it is love?
I wonder whether a nobody like me could have given something to her who was struggling in the
daily life in those days. Giving something is arrogant conceit. It is nothing but self-satisfaction.
I had been thinking about such a thing.
However, I guess what she saw in me was because I had nothing. That‘s why she tried to see
something in me. Perhaps she found a slight possibility in me, a guy filled with ambiguous, unstable
tomorrow. But I wasted days depending too much on her gentleness.
Now I finally can convey how I felt in those days when we met.

The devastating Carlisle floods of January 2005 ruined sixty five buses in Stagecoach’s former Ribble depot in Willowholme.
A forlorn line up of routemasters remaining there on 29 January were RML 2429, 2470, 2495, 2592 and 2488.
The level reached by the flood can be determined by the “tide mark” on the “portakabin” extreme right of the picture about a third of the way up the window!
First retaliatory entry in the five-image challenge that I issued to one Mr. Richard Visionheart... yes, he of the PANO-Vision sabotage juggernaut currently sweeping the Flickr countryside. Everywhere from Kasabonika, Ontario in Canada to Poggibonsi, Siena in Italy and all points in between, men and women are walking about waving their cell phones in the air with erratiKc hand movements, swooping and flailing about and causing onlookers to remark, "That person is definitely on drugs! Weirdos all of 'em!"
The idea for this followed a disKcussion he and I had about portrait-orientated images that are posted here on Flickr and how they just didn't seem to garner the same amount of attention as the wider formats; and a further disKcussion more recently about the brilliance of the King Crimson album Discipline; as well as a couple of beers I was having on a Friday night. Thus, The Frame by Frame Challenge was presented for his consideration. Well! Anyone who knows this man knows that a challenge issued is a challenge met and there just ain't two hootin' ponies about it!
The protoKcol for the five entries each was agreed upon:
1 Posts to alternate back and forth, with Richard kicking off
2 PANO-Vision sabotage teKchnique used for original photo
3 Presentation using portrait format
4 A link to a King Crimson piece of music for each entry
*Additionally, when all is said and done, he will choose one of my five, with me doing the same from his and then we will proceed to apply our own creative treatment to it, consequently producing a final 'bonus' image.

A masque was a form of festive entertainment way back in the day, like way back when folk pranced about in fancy knickerbockers and curtsied and the like. Well, this here theme park in Niagara Falls is all about entertainment however, no one goes about saying, "Me lady, mighten I haveth the next dance?" or anything like that.
This is a live recording also, as is Richard's first entry. Now, ain't that a co-inky-dink, huh? More of a King Crimson side projeKct, Fripp, Gunn and Mastelotto conjure up some pretty sweet sounds, very atmospheriKc and perfeKct for creating by, as would be a moonlit night, or so I'm told.

Main story
There are two reasons why a person faces the sea.
One, to enjoy a slice of shine in the sea like children bubbling over in the beach.
The other, to brush the dust of memory like an old man who misses old days, staring at the shine
quietly.

I face myself to change tomorrow, a vague day into something certain.
That is the meaning of a rebirth.
I had a very sweet girlfriend when I was 18.
After she left, I knew the meaning of gentleness for the first time and also a true pain of loss. After
she left, how many times did I depend too much on her, doubt her, envy her and keep on telling lies
until I realized it is love?
I wonder whether a nobody like me could have given something to her who was struggling in the
daily life in those days. Giving something is arrogant conceit. It is nothing but self-satisfaction.
I had been thinking about such a thing.
However, I guess what she saw in me was because I had nothing. That‘s why she tried to see
something in me. Perhaps she found a slight possibility in me, a guy filled with ambiguous, unstable
tomorrow. But I wasted days depending too much on her gentleness.
Now I finally can convey how I felt in those days when we met.

あらすじ
大学を目指している北見ケイは、SNS上で、6歳年上のイベントコンパニオン、上村香織に出会う。
上京してきた香織の夢は、有名なアーティストの友達になるためだ。
そのためにはラジオ局のプロデューサー、大沢亮の存在が必要だった。
大沢は、ラジオの生放送中、香織へ語りかける。
「僕には妻子がある。しかし、僕は君に会いたいと思っている」
ケイの同級生で、彼を想っている三條里香は、香織の動向を探っていた。。。。。
本編
人が海へ向かう理由には、二つある。
ひとつは、波打ち際ではしゃぐ子供のように、今の瞬間の海の輝きを楽しむこと。
もうひとつは、その輝きを静かに見据えて、過ぎ去った日々を懐かしむ老人のように記憶の埃を払うこと。
二つは重なり合わないようではあるけれども、たったひとつの意味しか生まない。
再生だ。
明日っていう、曖昧な日を確実なものへと変えてゆくために、自分の存在に向き合う。
それが再生の意味だ。
十八歳だった僕には大切な人がいた。

１ それまでの写真展。自分は行きたいと思ったか？
２ じゃ、自分が足を運んででも行きたい展示とは何か？
３ 原宿デザインフェスタで個展を開くまでに、毎月ひとつの作品を展示することにチャレンジ。

『新しい風は、いつも地下から吹いてくる』 ～ モスインライラックの活動休止に添えて ～
３０年ほど前、空前のバンドブームというのがメディアを席巻した。
ド下手で、リズムすらろくにキープできないようなバンドが、音楽の中身なども関係なくもてはやされ、身ぐるみを剥ぎ取られるようにして消費され尽くした。
まだ２０代前半だった僕にも理解できるド下手バンドが、なぜ評価を得られたのか。技術や楽曲の力ではなく、メディアの空気そのものに煽られ、バンドの名が知れ渡ってゆく。
「所詮音楽とは、ショービジネスさ」
大昔、ソロになったばかりのポールウェラーが或るインタビューでそう話していた。
音楽とは、金の成る木だ。金さえあれば、バンバン広告打って、いくらでも制覇できる。
しかし、それは束の間の出来事で、継続は決してされない。
バンドブームがまさにその良い例で、脳のない、センスのないバンドはやっぱり淘汰されていった。
そんななかで、僕が東京に居た頃に記憶に残っているのは、Xとルナシーだ。
このふたつのバンドは、当時のライブハウスでも名を馳せた。
僕がアルバイトしていたレンタルレコード屋さんにもやはりバンドやってる方がいて、Xといっしょにステージに立ったと熱く語っていた。
自分のバンドとはまるで比較にならないほどの技術、演奏力、表現力で、足元にも及ばなかったようだ。
しかし、彼はそれを自分のことのようにとても楽しく話していた。
ルナシーについてもやはり僕がバイトしていた別のレコード屋さんで、追っかけをしている女の子（すごく可愛い:)）がいて、やはり夢中になってバンドの良さを語っていた。
前者のバンドと後者のバンドの差は、血が通ってるかどうかだと思う。
上っ面だけで体裁よくコマーシャルに形成されたバンドと、小さなハコから叩かれて、のし上がってきたバンド。
どちらが本物かどうかは、僕がここに書くまでもなく、この現時点で結果は出ている。
もちろん、モスインライラックは後者にあたる。
モスインライラックは、この約６年間を走り抜けてきた。
ただ僕が知っているのはこの一ヶ月間程度のことであって、それ以前についてはユーチューブでしか知らない。
途中、メンバーチェンジがあり、現在のメンバーで固めるまで、おそらく大変だったと思う。
僕が今回撮ることになったのは、東京ビッグサイトのデザインフェスタで、マネージャーさんが僕の展示に足を止めたことだ。
マネージャーさんは、開口一番、こう言った。
『構図が違う』
僕の作品を見て、この一言を言うのは、美大生と広告会社関係、ギャラリー関係の方がほとんどで、バンド関係はいっさいなかった。
マネージャーさんは、『うちのバンド、撮っていただけませんか？』と丁寧に話された。
スマフォでモスインライラックのPVを観て、曲を聴き、普通にかっこいいと思った。
実はあまり報告はしていなかったけれども、ときどき、ビッグサイトでゴスロリ系の女子が僕の作品に足を止めてくれていた。
彼女たちはなぜかとても華奢で、色白であり、愛らしい。ぱっと見、被写体としては申し分ないのだけれども、なぜかそれ以上に僕からは踏み込めなかった。
僕はマネージャーさんと別れてから、もう一度、自宅でゆっくりモスインライラックの映像や楽曲などをチェックし直した。
僕のサイトを見てる方はご存知のように、この手のロックはいつも写真のテーマに合わせて採用していない。
僕の写真にはやはり合わない。なので、僕は撮影について辞退しようかとちょっと考え込んだ、ということはいっさいなく、ぜひ、やってみたいと思った。
僕は音楽とは音がすべてだと思っている。
PVなど他の飾りはいっさい要らない。
楽曲を聴いて、ピンとくれば関心を持つし、ピンとこなければまるで無関心。こんな状況で、
モスインライラックの音楽を僕は何度も聴いて1回目の撮影に臨んだ。
CDやストリーミングなどとは異なり、実際のライブはグルーブ感がまるで違う。
バンドのうねりというのは、そう簡単には生み出せない。
白を黒に変色する力。これはそう簡単には表現できない。場数がすべてを支配する。そのぐらい書いても過言ではない。
役人の机上の論理がクソに思えるのはここにある。
日常の退屈を、一瞬で塗り替えることができる。これがバンドの存在意義だ。
退屈でなければ悲惨な事故や事件は減るだろう、僕はずっとこの考えを根底に持っている。
だからこそ、アートは大切なのだ。
だれかの悲しみや痛みを拭い、楽しさや元気に変える。
これが音楽であり、アートだと真剣に思う。
２０１９年１１月１日を持って、モスインライラックは休止する。
けれども、バンドのメンバーがそれぞれの意思を持って、活動し続けるようだ。
僕はこのバンドに関われて、とても光栄でした。
ライブハウス。ハコ。
ここからすべてが始まる。
昔、僕が知ってるミュージシャンがこう話していたことを今でも僕の胸に秘めている。

僕がこのバンドを知ったのは、最後の数ヶ月だけれども、出会えて、ほんとうによかったと思っています。

My collection of pens (or 'writing instruments' as Montblanc says :-). From left to right Fisher Space pens (classic rainbow and black anodized), Cross Century, Montblanc Meisterstuck Classique in black and red resin, Montblanc Etoile, Montblanc Starwalker Ceramics, Montblanc Solitaire Blue Hour LeGrand (rollerball), Montblanc Meisterstuck Solitaire Blue Hour (midsize), Montblanc Starwalker Cool Blue, Omega Apollo 11 40th Anniv., Parker 45 (fountain pen), Parker 75, Rotring 600 (mech. drafting pencil), Tombow Zoom 848bw. The oldest are the 2 Parkers (the Parker 45 is from 1966 and the 75 is from 1964).and the black and gold Montblanc (from 1988). The Tombow is from the mid 80's.

Sverrir "Sigurðarson" (ca. 1145-1202), the fake king of Norway 1184-1202, originally an ordained priest who was the son of a comb maker in the Faeroe Islands. After many decades of civil war in Norway, there were many pretenders to the crown and Sverrir ultimately came up on top after claiming that his father was king Sigurd Munn (1133-1155) (who in turn was the son of the even more fake king Harald Gillekrist (ca. 1103-1136) from Ireland).
Sverrir is known as the king who dictated his own Saga - a blatant example of the fact that the winner takes it all and writes history for posterity to remember. King Sverrir has been very popular in post-reformation Norway because of his opposition to the church and the Pope in Rome; since in this way he is mirroring the protestant idol and superhero Martin Luther (1483-1546).

The first two lines look like mere perverse contradictoriness, but this is not so. In actual daily experience, or rather, in monthly and yearly, not to say lifely experience, it is always the unspoken intention that is effective, not the words which follow.

I have to say that flickr is really pissing me off.
It took me over 3 hours to comment back on my last image. Try clicking on a name, then click again to open the image, then go back on your browser. It stops and has to load that person's stream before you can navigate onemore page back to your own and then on to the next one.
They need to get their act together as one does not want to take that long to respond.

these are some of the girls at my school. today was a blast - writing on everyone, including the boys, during classes and lunch break.
