I gave a talk today on photography and the web. To prepare I went through some older photos, and stumbled on these three from two projects for ExactTarget that I'd forgotten about.

Lighting for this is a Ranger Quadra with a 53" Octobox just out of frame on the left, a borrowed Alien Bees 800 on the right, and two speedlights with CTO gels, one on each pillar in the back. All balanced to match the ambient florescent lights.

Collaboration with illustrator Lisbeth Svärling Her flowerpatterns are printed on semitransparent paper, then folded twice and sewn together by me.

This book was made using beer mats I picked up from a German pub in Fort Lauderdale called The Old Heidelberg. The translation on the front according to my translation widget is "The family is the most important in lives. Drink brother shank." Not sure what shank means but the first part is nice.

I used white tape and book board to create the spine and colored hemp thread for the binding. The pages are made up of white graph paper, tracing paper, yellow and blue lined paper, hot pink and white bond paper and envelopes with security printing on one side. The book measures 3 3/8" x 3 3/8". The pages are 3 1/4" x 3 1/4". The spine is an inch wide.

A couple of magpies flew over from behind the plane so I couldn't resist seeing if it could focus and take the shoot quickly as they came.

I made this book using a discarded cigarette box. I mounted the box on decorative paper which added some weight to the box. I then bound the books to the box using olive green hemp thread. The pages were made using white graph paper, white bond, hot pink and yellow paper, blue and yellow lined paper and recycled security printed envelopes. The book measures 4" tall x 2 1/4" wide. There are 112 pages to write/draw/take notes/whatever.

I upcycled the cover for my Coltrane CD into a cover for this book. The signatures are comprised of light blue bond paper, upcycled cover of a ream of HP paper, yellow bond paper, pages made from an upcycled brown paper bag, red bond paper, tracing paper, upcycled junk mail, emails and envelopes, pink bond paper and one sided lined paper. I bound the signatures to the cover using the long stitch binding method. The inside back cover features a pocket. The book measures 5" tall and 5 3/4" wide and an inch wide at the spine. The book has 144 pages with 288 surfaces to put ideas down on.

Jake Schmitz, Organic Valley's Eastern Regional Farmer Manager and Climate Change expert, discussed pasturing and soil health and how it contributes to heard health and our own health. He loves his gadgets and showed of his arsenal of soil tools!

FIELD NOTES FROM THE FARM DISCOVERY TOUR:

Healthy soil is full of life! One teaspoon of soil is home to more than 7.5 billion organisms, including insects, protozoa, bacteria, and fungi—more living organisms than there are people on Earth!

"Grass is the great healer for soil”

A healthy ecosystem provides additional ecosystem services such as water storage, soil retention and providing habitat.

Rodale Institute, the organic farming research institute, has found that organic pasture sequesters 3,500 lbs of CO2 annually7 www.strauscom.com/rodale-whitepaper/

"Organic farming may be one of the most powerful tools in the fight against global warming. Findings from The Rodale Institute’s 23-year Farming Systems Trial® (FST) comparing organic and conventional cropping systems show organic/regenerative agriculture systems reduce carbon dioxide, a major greenhouse gases-positioning organic farming as a major player in efforts to slow climate change from runaway greenhouse gases increases. “ - Rodale Whitepaper

"Increasing soil organic matter for the soil’s carbon bank is a principle goal of organic agriculture. Organic agriculture relies on the carbon bank and stimulated soil microbial communities to increase soil fertility, improve plant health, and support competitive crop yields. This approach utilizes the natural carbon cycle to reduce the use of purchased synthetic inputs, increase energy resource efficiency, improve economic returns for farmers, and reduce toxic effects of fertilizers and pesticides on human health and the environment.”

This is for The World Through My Eyes group competition.

I had this idea I wanted to test..

How: The original picture was provided by kktp_, seen on the lower right.

I then took a photograph of plain white papers (one crumpled) and a brush.

In Photoshop I made the original look sort of like a watercolour or a painting, fitted it on the crumpled paper (with the help of displace filter and blending options and some tweaking :).

Then I made another watercolour-looking one plane and put it on the other sheet of paper.. like someone was starting to make a watercolour..

Well that's it. Let me know what you think!

On 1 August 2005, at 2pm, Chinedu Ani and his friend asked a politician for financial support for the friend’s football career. According to a witness, the politician became angry and told the two that he “would deal with them seriously”. The politician made a complaint at a police station, claiming the two men were “armed robbers”. Around an hour later, the two men were shot by police officers and taken to the police station in the boot of their car. They

were kept in the boot for hours, driven to state Criminal Investigation Department (CID) and back to Ogui police station, although no arms were found on them or in their car. After 5 pm, a police officer decided the men should go to hospital. When they reached the hospital at 6.15 pm, Chinedu Ani had already died; his friend was badly wounded. Chinedu Ani ’s family claim that the police prevented the two men for getting medical treatment. “My brother was losing blood fast. I demanded to see an officer to bring them to hospital. The police told me they don’t give hospital aid to criminals.”

On 9 September 2005, the Governor of Enugu State set up a Commission of Inquiry into the death of Chinedu Ani. The commission finalized the inquiry in November 2005 and sent its report to the Governor of Enugu State. To date, the report or the government’s whitepaper have not been made public, despite repeated requests by Chinedu Ani’s family. No steps have been taken to prosecute those responsible for his death. Chinedu Ani’s brother said of the one of the police officers involved: “After four years, he is still in the force; who knows how many people he has killed now.
