My sons' made their Valentine's Day cards for their classmates and teacher's tonight. They have school parties tomorrow, on the 12th. I always insist on them making the cards themselves, even if it is just cut, paste and sticker work. No store bought cards from us... too impersonal, and the kids don't learn anything. They had so much fun. It's great to see how they enjoy making one for each of their classmates.

The first phase of BC's disability white paper consultation, led by representatives of government, the disability and business communities, is now closed but the process is far from over.

Echoing the United Nations sentiment "nothing about us, without us," the comprehensive, three-month public consultation into issues facing people with disabilities received incredible support from community members, with and without disabilities, throughout the province.

I love palm trees. I am from Puerto Rico, so the image of tropical islands is very appealing to me. This paper sculpture is about 3" x 2"

I used a transparent printed cover that I salvaged from a catalog. It allows you to see the pictures I glued to the first page inside the book and the last page on the back side. I used a piece of book board for the spine and I used orange binding thread to bind the signatures to the cover. I used several different colored papers for the signature block and salvaged security printed envelopes as well as a salvaged map to make up the pages. I also created unique headbands at the top and bottom of the spine giving the book a little more of a sophisticated look. I personally hand cut and folded each one of the 128 pages in this book giving you 256 surfaces to write/draw/sketch/whatever you'd like to your hearts content. The book measures 4 1/2" wide x 5 3/4" tall and it's about an inch at the spine making it perfect to carry along with you or stash in your glove compartment or purse so that it's there when you need to capture your thoughts and ideas.

Organic farming offers a unique and intimate relationship with the ecology of the land. Since the McClellands have transitioned to organic, they have observed a restoration of their farm's ecosystem and received many benefits of working in harmony with nature on their farm such as creating a biologically rich soil that retains moisture making it a more drought-resiliant landscape, raising healthier animals that need fewer vet visits, creating a habitat for more wildlife, and creating an overall positive impact to their business as well. They continue to build a more diverse farming operation that supports a regenerative approach to agricultural, utilizes the natural carbon cycle to improve the heath of their animals, the farm environment, and the natural eco-system. When we purchase organic products from ecologically-minded farmers like the McClellands, we are also supporting good land stewardship.

Ecological farming plays a major role in the fight against global warming. According to Rodale Institute Whitepaper, "Organic farming may be one of the most powerful tools in the fight against global warming. Findings from The Rodale Institute’s 23-year Farming Systems Trial® (FST) comparing organic and conventional cropping systems show organic/regenerative agriculture systems reduce carbon dioxide, a major greenhouse gases-positioning organic farming as a major player in efforts to slow climate change from runaway greenhouse gases increases.“ www.strauscom.com/rodale-whitepaper

Jake Schmitz, Organic Valley's Eastern Regional Farmer Manager and Climate expert loves gadgets and sharing his vast knowledge about soil health and how healthy soil grows healthy grass that grows healthy animals, who produce healthy food that keeps us healthy too.

One of my most memorable moments of Organic Valley's Farm Discovery Tour was when Jake lead us out to the pasture with the cows who were crunching away on the native grass where he explained the critical connection of soil health to our own health. It really resonated with me when he said:

"the soil has an abundant, rich, dense and active micro ecology that is amazingly similar to the gut micro ecology of a ruminant."

The interconnectedness of everything in nature resonated through Jakes words because like the soil, and the cow, the human gut also has a micro ecology with a vast and diverse ecosystem. Our gut is the epicenter of our health, it is where our immune system is located. When we choose quality, nutrient dense organic food, we become the beneficiaries of healthy food, raised and grown on healthy nutrient dense grass grown in rich, well managed, healthy soil. Our health is directly affected by the quality of the food we choose to eat, so, when we are making decisions at the grocery store, it is imperative to consider the source all the way to the soil from which it was grown or raised. This is what it means to #KnowYourFarmer.

The health of soil, plant, animal, and man is one and indivisible. ~ Albert Howard

all disease begins in the gut. - Hippocrates

“Land, then, is not merely soil; it is a fountain of energy flowing through a circuit of soils, plants, and animals.” - Aldo Leopold, A Sand County Almanac, 1949

The competition for the reconstruction of the Palace was won by architect Charles Barry and his design for a building in the Perpendicular Gothic style. The remains of the Old Palace (with the exception of the detached Jewel Tower) were incorporated in its much larger replacement, which contains over 1,100 rooms organised symmetrically around two series of courtyards. Part of the New Palace's area of 3.24 hectares (8 acres) was reclaimed from the Thames, which is the setting of its principal façade, the 266-metre (873 ft) river front. Barry was assisted by Augustus W. N. Pugin, a leading authority on Gothic architecture and style, who provided designs for the decoration and furnishings of the Palace. Construction started in 1840 and lasted for thirty years, suffering great delays and cost overruns, as well as the death of both leading architects; works for the interior decoration continued intermittently well into the twentieth century. Major conservation work has been carried out since, due to the effects of London's air pollution, and extensive repairs took place after the Second World War, including the reconstruction of the Commons Chamber following its bombing in 1941.

Forgive me for repeating myself throughout each photograph but I'm not expecting you, the viewer, to look at each shot I have taken ... of course I would be delighted if you did.

I diagonally cut a small selection of white pieces of paper and fanned them out. What you see is the shots taken at various apertures, angles and direction of light. I found the simplicity effective and pleasing, I hope you do too? Thank you for taking the time to look at them.

Happy Macro Monday!

My submission was a few minutes too late this week.

Oh well, here it is anyway, I struggled with this one.

This book is perfect to write down some thoughts while having a cup of tea. It's long skinny format is great for fitting it onto a table filled with dishes meaning it's perfect for writing or sketching while eating.

This book is made using a red Asian paper covering book board. The inside of the cover was lined with a page from local Asian market circular, Marukai. The signatures are made up of light blue, yellow, pink, hot pink and white bond paper. Also, I added recycled envelopes and brown bags, graph paper and yellow college ruled lined paper. I used a turquoise hemp thread to bind the signatures to the cover. Against the red cover it looks greenish. I also created false headbands, using scraps of the security printed envelopes, on the top and bottom of the signatures as an added feature.

Once I started doing the CD cover salvage books, I had a ton of options to choose from. This one was near the bottom of the pile so I decided to try a new binding on this one that I had never tried. It's still a long stitch bind but a different pattern than I had done before. The stations where the thread comes through the spine fell into one another and the thread ended up not being as clean and neat as I wanted but still, it gave me a cool effect that was unexpected. This book had tutti fruitti signatures, lots of different paper stocks hand cut together so each spread is unique. The final size of this book was 5 1/2" wide and 5" tall. It was over an inch at the spine. THis book had a crapload of pages for the size of the book.

I salvaged the items I used to make this cover from Transplants recycled paper CD cover. I bound the signatures to the cover using a long stitch bind and colored hemp binding thread in a design I created for the spine. The signatures consist of blue, red, yellow and white graph paper and lined paper and finished with sheets of tracing paper. The book measures 5 5/8" wide and just under 5" tall and is an inch wide at the spine. This book had 128 pages with 256 surfaces to write/draw/whatever on.

Mudassar Javid a member of the writing team for the student white paper on Climate Leadership in schools says one of their recommendations is for students to gain more of a voice on what they learn: "In terms of our advisory committees we want to make sure that students feel they actually have a voice and there is not a sense of pessimism. This first begins with a student body within our school board and it fully expands on to a provincial level where we can communicate with the ministers," said Javid. Very cool rolled paper art at my friend's architecture firm.

I used blue leather backed with card stock and lined with handmade silkscreened Japanese wave paper. I used a piece of chipboard for the spine. I wrapped each signature with pages from the Japanese newspaper Rafu Shimpo. The white pages are a high quality Hammermill bond paper with a slick writing/drawing surface. I also added faux headbands to give the book a more sophisticated look. I binded the signatures to the book using red colored hemp thread using a wrapped long stitch bind. The cover is a soft cover allowing it to be comfortably stuffed into pockets, purses and bags of all sorts making this perfect for the writer or artist on the go. The size of the book is 4.5" W x 5.75" H with 128 white pages or 256 white surfaces to write or draw on.
