Railroads played a large role in the development of the United States from the industrial revolution in the Northeast (1810–1850) to the settlement of the West (1850–1890). The American railroad mania began with the founding of the first passenger and freight line in the nation of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad in 1827.

It flourished with continuous railway building projects for the next 45 years until the financial Panic of 1873 followed by a major economic depression bankrupted many companies and temporarily stymied and ended growth.

There is no question about the importance of railroads in American history.

A week later and the view is the just the same - but with much more snow and it is much colder 😉

♫ Happy Bokeh Wednesday ♫

When I photographed this trumpeter swan family back in June, there were eight fluffy white cygnets swimming with their parents. Today, six weeks later, the family size has shrunk by one as there are only seven young swans a-swimming with their folks. With all the predators around that would like to eat baby swans - coyotes, red fox, raccoons, mink, bald eagles, red-tailed hawks, great horned owls and snapping turtles - I'd say that mom & dad swan have done a super job of protecting their kids here at Cardinal Marsh.

"Come back when you grow up girl, you're still living in a paper doll world"...

Well, yeah, I ain't never gonna grow up.

Just saying.

The other thing that occurs to me with the Bobby Vee song is that it sounds like he goes into a relationship expecting to break the heart of the woman he's involved with. Like he's singing "50 ways to leave your lover" before he's even walked through the door. My take on a guy like that is "Skateaway"

So you know what, mister, I'm good with being a paperdoll. I'm having too much fun to grow up like ever. Adulting is over-rated (especially at tax time! grrr, some things you can't escape)

......they open your heart and lift your spirit.

I think those kisses come in the form of a friend, a thought, a sight, a song, a laugh, a moment.......

I want to thank my Flickr friends for giving me all of those.

Today, I'm blowing some kisses your way. Have a nice Sunday.

It was dark at 5:30am, the path to the top was muddy and slippery due to raining these days. 0C degree, it was freezing cold even with winter jacket on. The sky was full of stars, my hands could almost reach them. When my eyes gradually adapted to the dark, the stars were even brighter. The beautiful Moraine Lake was looming in the mist from the blue hour to red with sunrise light… The most beautiful 2~3 hours. 😉

There were not so many parking spots left at 5:15am. But luckily got in. Went here again one week later at 4:50am, planned to take sunrise photo at Moraine Lake, then hike to the Larch Valley. But parking lot was full. If the lots were full, you would not be allowed in… But the staff started to work at 5am, so many cars parked the 13 km road to Moraine Lake (roadside)… It was the peak time for Larch Valley, which is located up above Moraine Lake in the hamlet of Lake Louise, the trailhead of this hike begins at this very busy, very popular Moraine Lake parking lot… If you want to capture sunrise in the early morning, better arriving before 5am to guarantee a parking spot. Otherwise, you may have to go somewhere else…😊

CHANGING LEAVES

As I shuffle down the path leading through the park,

As the days grow shorter now and soon it will be dark.

I realize that life is like the seasons we live through,

Life is like the changing seasons always changing too.

Only then we realize that life has changed so fast,

Only then we realize that nothing ever last.

Life goes through the seasons as the years accumulate,

Many times we long for summer when it is too late.

~ excerpts from the poem of James A. Kisner ~

The Acalypha Wilkesiana or Fijian Fire Plant, at the end of our garden, is one of the places I check for Dragon and Damselflies every day. This morning, though, there were no odonata but, surprisingly, this False Garden Mantis in search of some preys. It is the very first Mantis that I find in that tree.

This *review* was for a small vintage telephone charm, using a still workable rotary phone! I’m hopelessly addicted to creating still life compositions to feature recent purchases! Often I’ll print my photos on cards to send to friends! Repurposing and gifting feeds and satisfies my obsessive creative urges by distracting me from the depressing and uncontrollable world situation.

When a year older friend FP7a drops by to give an E-8 grief on it's 75th Birthday. Nostalgia indeed, two Southern painted locomotives parked side by side as if a normal everyday occurrence. Makes me laugh as both are younger than I am, couple of kids...

When i look into your eyes, i know i have found the the mirror of my own soul.

It’s been a while since my last upload, but I’ve been very busy in my job and my girlfriend and I were also busy planning something I’ve dreamed of a long time: a trip to Iceland! After so many years, I finally managed to visit and explore the land of fire and ice and even though we initially thought about spending three weeks there, our two weeks road trip was just epic and so overwhelmingly and otherworldly beautiful that I cannot even describe it.

And on top of all of it: Approximately a week before the start of our trip, the Fagradasfjall volcano on the Reykjanes peninsula became active and started spitting lava. For some reason, I have the feeling that this was no coincidence as this happened exactly at the birthday of my mom who sadly passed away six years ago one day after her birthday and which I know for sure would have loved to see me going there on a road trip adventure taking lots of beautiful images. So if this was really you mum, thank you so much for such a once-in-a-lifetime experience. We were even more lucky as in the first days, lava was only coming out of an elongated fissure which has then transformed into a small photogenic crater as we arrived.

But let’s start from to the beginning: We started our trip and thought that we should hike to the volcano as long as it is active and since it was very close to the airport, we drove there immediately after we picked up our camper van. When we arrived at the parking lot, we saw crowds of people and struggled to find a parking spot at the second parking lot they opened (they even closed the first one), but luckily we did find a spot, took a short break to rest and hiked up there in the afternoon. The first part of the trail was easy to hike although it was the steepest part leading up the hill for around one hour followed by a very, very rocky “path” on top of the mountain ridge which also took us around one hour before the trail goes down to the actual eruption site. All in all, it took us 2.5 to 3 hours to get there and after being stoked about seeing the old lava fields from last year’s eruption the volcano finally revealed itself in front of our eyes. We just stood there in awe, had goosebumps and I think we both didn’t realize what was in front of our eyes. I still don’t fully realize it today and cannot describe it in words, but seeing this and hearing the sounds of the volcano spitting molten rocks high up into the air was just phenomenal.

We then spent some time there and decided to leave as it got dark since we didn’t want to hike the very rocky part of the trail in full darkness (even though we had headlamps with us). Knowing that this will again be a 2+ hours hike also strengthened our decision to leave and on our way I looked back, saw that the smoke from the volcano which was coloured red from the glowing lava and thought that this would have also made for some very nice images. Anyhow, I did take a few images like this one which I really like and got amazingly lucky to be there just in time, especially since the volcano was declared inactive after one and a half weeks later. So I hope you like this attempt of capturing the Fagradasfjall and I hope that you will follow me and my girlfriend (www.flickr.com/photos/193130995@N02) on our road trip through the amazingly beautiful Iceland.

When we landed at Gatwick Airport last summer after an overnight flight, we took a cab to the Bed and Breakfast at Copyhold Hollow near Haywards Heath. After a sumptuous breakfast and a nap, we took the short walk to this garden and got over our jet lag by spending the late morning roaming its paths and resting on its many benches.
