stick welding. note : those glasses are NOT proper eyewear for stick welding, but are ok for gas welding. i'm just in the process of switching over here.
Friction Stir Welding was invented by Wayne Thomas at TWI Ltd in 1991 and overcomes many of the problems associated with traditional joining techniques. Friction Stir Welding is a solid state process which produces welds of high quality in difficult to weld materials such as aluminium and is fast becoming the process of choice for manufacturing light weight transport structures such as boats, trains and aeroplanes.

Simple fitment of welding glass (plus graduated ND filter here) using a mounting ring for a slot in filter holder plus 3 spring clips. For just the welding glass, a single clip at the top usually works ok, but can let a bit of light leak in around the edges.

Finally completed; my first major welding project. The table is made of 1/4 inch steel plate it is 3 foot by 5 foot and stands 3 and a half feet high. The table weighs approx. 500lbs.
The table has a 5" steel vise attached to one corner and is on casters so that it can be moved out of the garage to be used outside as a fire prevention measure.
My first play with welding glass as a ND filter, this bit of shade 12 I have works out to about 10 stops. The colour cast is terrible and the contrast is not so great but after a little pp I think it looks quit nice in mono.
I don't really like the composition too much but this was just a test, exposure was 30 seconds at f4(ish) in bright direct sunlight! There will be more to come, especially if I can find a bit of glass to fit the front of my Sigma 10-20mm!

So this is the basic setup i starting using when i was in Nova scotia. This is on a wharf on the Dartmouth side of the Halifax harbor.
Simple setup, i have a standard 72mm cokin adapter on my camera, 2 paddle pop sticks and 4 cloths pegs. Did the trick, was quick and simple to get on and off the camera. The rig never fell off, thou it worried me a few times.
I diddnt notice any light leakage, but that doesnt mean there wont be some in the future. My plan for now is to build a better attach meant so i can slide it on and off my cokin p series adapter's and i if get some more time, ill build a hood for the filter too.

PACIFIC OCEAN (June 16, 2012) Hull Technician Fireman Bryant Jacobs, from Cottonwood, Ariz., welds together a table in the focsule of amphibious assault ship USS Peleliu (LHA 5). Peleliu is currently underway conducting pre-deployment exercises in the Pacific Ocean.
A friend was doing some welding so I decided to try my luck at getting some close-up shots. We had a good system where I'd focus on the spot, shut my eyes really tight and then he'd start. When I heard sparks, I shot. Got some pleasing results.

Thunderstorms were happening all day. Lighting stopped cracking and the lights stopped flickering long enough to weld the post mount in place before it started up again.
Ribbons of continuous welded rail wait for installation along CN's Freeport Sub near Hawthorne Crossing, Chicago. With double-track jointed rail and US&S R-2 "traffic light" signals, this section of the old IC Iowa Division still retains some flavor, though it appears the jointed rail is not long for this world.
This doesn't look like much, but it represents a lot of hours of learning and doing. Around 30 hours of time at the welding table to get to this point is my best guess.
