After 2 years of saying "I would love to take some photos of your welding shop" I finally brought my camera over to John's welding shop. I was not disappointed.

One of the welding machines at Appropiate Technology Project (ATP) in Kisumu, Kenya, August 11,2011. ATP originated as a Finland based Lutheran based project to build a training facility and sustainable business appropiate to the local ecomony. ATP has been on its own resources for many years, and Bethel Lutheran Church was able to provide support for repairs to ATP's welding and hydraulic equipment.
Here's another film shot from past weeks. Universities hold a downhill race each year on Shrove Tuesday, and each year all the various organisations build their own sled. The sled being built here came in third, being judged mostly by style and effort.
Focus and exposure by guesstimating, framing by "Oh I can't look directly, it's around there". Cropped slightly after scanning.
Shot on a Rodenstock Ysette 6x4.5 from 1935 (essentially a Balda Baldax with Rodenstock Trinar lenses) on Kodak Portra 400 VC. Fantastic, even in color.
I was very frustrated with the stick welding objectives, so I switched to TIG and it was just as fun as I remembered and I'm pretty good for a novice, too.
The completed table in place on the computer desk.
My LED MR16 spot makes for a terrible drawing light, I might need to go back to something more incandescent.
Also, ignore the mess. I pretty much just swiped the contents of the desk aside.
Lunghe esposizioni in pieno giorno con un vetro per maschera da saldatore davanti all'obiettivo. Primi esperimenti. Forse devo prendere un vetro più sottile. Sicuramente devo customizzare il bilanciamento del bianco.
Long exposures in broad daylight with a welding mask glass in front of the lens. First experiments. Maybe I need to take a thinner glass. Surely I must customize the white balance.

There are over 1800 climbing routes in and around the Smith Rock park ranging from some of the best sport climbs in the world, to..."you've got to be kidding me!"
Smith Rock State Park encompasses 651 acres on the Oregon high desert plateau, which hovers around 3000 feet in elevation. The major rock faces are composed of welded tuff (compressed volcanic ash) reaching a height of up to 550 feet. These impressive pillars are surrounded by basalt rimrock with the Crooked River separating the two geologic features.
Due to the location on the pipe, this joint must be tig welded. While it's possible to do it in one pass, this one was done in two, a root pass and a cover pass.

FAQs of Manual Butt Welding Machine
Q.What's the warranty time for this machine?
A.Our warranty time is one year. All the problems that arise during this period are free of charge. After the warranty time we'll be responsible too. We will solve your problems at the first time.
Q.Could the machine be used on a wet area?
A.The machine should be operated in a dry area. The protective measures should be adopted when it is used in rain or on wet ground.
Q.What's the difference between Manual Butt Welding Machine and Hydraulic Butt Welding Machine?
A.The main difference is whether they contain hydraulic units that can provide hydraulic strength to move or remove the two pipes while butt fusion process, and keep a certain & stable pressure while two pipes are bonded. Manual butt welding machine doesn’t consist of a hydraulic unit. So the pipe move/removal shall be made manually. Obviously, the hydraulic welding machine is more convenient, labor-saving and intelligent than the manual type, so the manual one is only suitable for machines under 315mm.
Material Application of Manual Butt Welding Machine
Not as dramatic of an effect from the welding as I would have liked, but the image isn't without it's redeeming qualities. Two things stand out for me.
1) the tote with the company name is framed and lit between the arc and weld mask
2) Lots of diaganal lines and they all lead to the welders face and then to the arc. Especially the weld rod itself. My eyes tend to go back and forth between the two items, which then brings focus on the comapny name again.
Wish I would have planned all this :)
