This doesn't look like much, but it represents a lot of hours of learning and doing. Around 30 hours of time at the welding table to get to this point is my best guess.
The Weld Boat House faces out onto a curve in the river. It houses the shells used by the intramural and women's intercollegiate crews. (The shells for the men's crews are in the Newell Boat House, upstream on the other side of the bridge.)

Marco told me on the phone that it is the left ankle of the 40 foot version.* It was stress tested yesterday, using a fork lift this time. The other stress test was done with a truck:

* - i suppose this could be the first useable piece of the finished sculpture, but made from measurements. The usual way to make full size parts will be to measure up from plaster, 3 foot, sections, but they are not made yet.
Later- this piece was kept as a model. the left ankle was built again.
Another one for the eyes this week… welding safety! Welding sparks and the light emitted can quickly damage your eyes if you are not wearing the proper gear. If you notice somebody welding, be sure to keep your eyes away until they are finished. Also, be aware of surrounding surfaces that can bounce hazardous light into your eyes. If you are the welder, do your best to let others know you are welding. If you can, set up the welding walls around you to block the light and proper vacuums to ventilate the fumes. Don’t forget to wear welding gloves, the materials you are welding can be extremely hot and damaging if they enter your pores.
