No, aliens have not taken over the Glimmerglass campus. Today there was
a welding seminar held in the scene shop for people to learn how to
weld. I had the honor of attending and trying my own hand at it. The
helmets have tinted glass in them, many times more dark than your
ordinary pair of sunglasses. This is used so you can look at the weld
without damaging your eyesight. Here you see MIchael demonstrating some
of the more advanced welding techniques for some of the stage ops.

this is the proper safety gear for stick welding, but as you can tell from my face the ones at the shop tend to pull the hairs out of my head.
Here's the 'final' pic of my welding truck, all assembled and painted! I've still some touchups that the photographs revealed..
This is a Radiograph of a butt-weld of carbon steel pipe. The weld is deemed a failure due to the dark area (internal concavity). There is also porosity (air bubbles) visible under the 125 mark as grayish streaks. Also, the relatively straight line visible before the concavity and after the porosity shows incomplete penetration (part of the bevel of the pipe has been left behind and not fused in with the rest of the weld).
