Workers weld stiffeners for the bulkhead of WSDOT's new 64-car ferry, under construction at Todd Pacific Shipyards in Seattle. "Todd Pacific Shipyards Photo"

This image was taken at the Eveleigh railway workshops whilst restoration of Loco 3265 was under way at Eveleigh railway workshops. The Museum took on this challenge, beginning in 1998, to achieve an impressive static exhibit and an operational engine carrying special steam tours. Work commenced in January 1998 and an inspection revealed that the boiler and firebox needed extensive repairs. The 3265 used to haul express trains such as the Newcastle Express.

Friction Stir Welding was invented by Wayne Thomas at TWI Ltd in 1991 and overcomes many of the problems associated with traditional joining techniques. Friction Stir Welding is a solid state process which produces welds of high quality in difficult to weld materials such as aluminium and is fast becoming the process of choice for manufacturing light weight transport structures such as boats, trains and aeroplanes.

Senior Airman William Byrd, 944th Logistics Readiness Squadron member, welds two pieces of metal together for his initial training on the fundamentals of welding to complete his career field core requirements on Aug 7. For the vehicle maintenance career field, welding equipment and the proper technique of welding is a core requirement that needs to be completed on a recurring basis.

that was the most difficult frame to weld, contortions to get to all the tight spots around the seat tube platform. Next time (if there is one for e-stays) i'll weld before I tack the seat stays so I can get my head closer!

Tramway construction went on largely unnoticed by the people of Birmingham because the work was carried out behind barriers. here workmen have set the hight of the grooved tramway rails above the concrete slab base, and set the radius of the curve, next the ends of the rails are prepared for welding together, to make one continuous rail. The location is the junction of Bull and Corporation Streets Birmingham.

Learned this trick when I was at RISD from Mark in the ID Woodshop. I had participated in a work/study program while I attended and one of the many shop improvements Mark had me on was building tables and such. Relatively inexpensive way to start making structures.

First little play with my £2 ND10 filter made out of welding glass. Not very interesting composition (just the view out of my front room), but I am quite impressed with the IQ, a few spots to clone out but otherwise pretty good. The shots come out extremely green, but easily sorted with white balance in PS. This was 25" @ f14, need to try some longer exposures

stick welding. note : those glasses are NOT proper eyewear for stick welding, but are ok for gas welding. i'm just in the process of switching over here.

This is stainless steel. I really love working with it.

Simple fitment of welding glass (plus graduated ND filter here) using a mounting ring for a slot in filter holder plus 3 spring clips. For just the welding glass, a single clip at the top usually works ok, but can let a bit of light leak in around the edges.

My first play with welding glass as a ND filter, this bit of shade 12 I have works out to about 10 stops. The colour cast is terrible and the contrast is not so great but after a little pp I think it looks quit nice in mono.

I don't really like the composition too much but this was just a test, exposure was 30 seconds at f4(ish) in bright direct sunlight! There will be more to come, especially if I can find a bit of glass to fit the front of my Sigma 10-20mm!

So this is the basic setup i starting using when i was in Nova scotia. This is on a wharf on the Dartmouth side of the Halifax harbor.

Simple setup, i have a standard 72mm cokin adapter on my camera, 2 paddle pop sticks and 4 cloths pegs. Did the trick, was quick and simple to get on and off the camera. The rig never fell off, thou it worried me a few times.

I diddnt notice any light leakage, but that doesnt mean there wont be some in the future. My plan for now is to build a better attach meant so i can slide it on and off my cokin p series adapter's and i if get some more time, ill build a hood for the filter too.
