Mk 1 Second Open (48 seats) 4809 at Brechin Station, September 1994.
The coach had arrived from Craigintinny depot in Edinburgh December 1993 & was more or less serviceable if I remember correctly.
However, it was whisked into the shed for a Christmas holiday work session that saw much welding & filling undertaken. The repaint progressed through the spring & summer, being sponsored by a BRPS member from Montrose on the condition that it was painted maroon, not red & cream.
One Saturday afternoon in September 2015, I was sitting in my van outside a job in Aboyne having my ‘fly cup’, when non other than top gricer David Mitchell called with his latest ‘gen’ from his visit to the Epping-Ongar Railway. He was actually sitting in 4809, which by now was resident there & had to break the news to me that the coach had now been painted back into blue & grey....
That's right: an electrician arc welding. How fitting! Brand new experience for me, and it was an absolute blast.
Thanks Jade! <3

3g mig welding test. its upsided down since this was done uphill. A common mig welding test is 3/8" plate A36 carbon steel with a 37.5 degree bevel. open butt root, done downhill, fill is done uphill.
3 passes total.
This was a pull test we set up to test the yield strengh of 4 x 10mm carbon studs welded by friction with the R1004 portable weld head onto 1" thick plate. during the demo we had 300bar(9ton) pull on these 4 small studs. after everyone went home we tested it to destruction (what fun) After standing well back we had them up to equiv of 13.5 tonnes, then one stretched and snapped, one stripped the threads on the stud, and the other two just stretched, All welds where still complete showing the weld was stronger than the studs!!!!! beyond predictions.
