Aluminum is a big heat sink and starts melting before you realize it.

Most of the seal is made by just fusing the material. Very little filler is used

This pipe is hooked up to an exhaust fan which sucks all the bad stuff to the outside.

Welding and joining technologies are fundamental to engineering and manufacturing. Without the ability to make strong and durable connections between materials it would be impossible to produce the many different items we all rely on in our everyday lives – from the very large (buildings, pipelines, trains and bridges) to the very small (medical implants and electronic devices).

TWI has its roots in welding and joining technology and over many years has been responsible for developing and encouraging the adoption of new techniques and best practice in all industry sectors, providing its Members with the right manufacturing choices first time.

Crown Equipment uses a virtual welding machine as part of its welder training and qualification program. In addition to improving employee skills, Crown’s virtual welding program has significantly decreased the amount of scrap metal produced through traditional welder training. This initiative is just one element of Crown’s commitment to improving the sustainability of raw materials and its manufacturing processes, as shared in Crown’s recent ecologic™ report. Friction Stir Welding was invented by Wayne Thomas at TWI Ltd in 1991 and overcomes many of the problems associated with traditional joining techniques. Friction Stir Welding is a solid state process which produces welds of high quality in difficult to weld materials such as aluminium and is fast becoming the process of choice for manufacturing light weight transport structures such as boats, trains and aeroplanes.
