Welding and joining technologies are fundamental to engineering and manufacturing. Without the ability to make strong and durable connections between materials it would be impossible to produce the many different items we all rely on in our everyday lives – from the very large (buildings, pipelines, trains and bridges) to the very small (medical implants and electronic devices).

Weld Boathouse was built on the Charles River in 1906. It serves many boating, rowing, and scullling functions. Harvard's main intercollegiate rowing teams use another boathouse. Eliot House is in the background. The tower of another residence house is at the far right.
Floor weld. Panels were put on top in two sections, welded on the top in the cab, then underneath to weld the diagonal section to the horizontal one.

90s exposure through a welding glass filter
Pentre Ifan is a burial chamber with a huge capstone delicately poised on three uprights. Once known as Arthurs' Quoit, Pentre Ifan means Ivan's Village. This monument, dating back to about 3500 BC and unusually oriented north-south, stands on the slopes of a ridge commanding extensive views over the Nevern Valley. The elegant capstone weighs over 16 tons; it is 5m (16ft 6in) long and 2.4m (8ft) off the ground. The stones of the chamber are all of local igneous rock; on the portal stone there is a faint decorative cupmark.

Many apartments in China have metal bars on them to keep out burglars. This man is making one of these using sunglasses for protection as he welds. I am very dubious as to whether sunglasses provide sufficient eye protection. However, things have progressed. When I first arrived, I often saw people who didn't wear any eye protection at all when welding. Photo was desaturated and a blue filter applied in Photoshop.

A fun place to visit...so many specialized machines and projects underway! Great to see a thriving industry in our city that is so full of sad reminders of industries lost.
