The largest spacecraft welding tool in the world, the Vertical Assembly Center officially is open for business at NASA's Michoud Assembly Facility in New Orleans. The 170-foot-tall, 78-foot-wide giant completes a world-class welding toolkit that will be used to build the core stage of America's next great rocket, the Space Launch System (SLS).
SLS will be the most powerful rocket ever built for deep space missions, including to an asteroid and eventually Mars. The core stage, towering more than 200 feet tall (61 meters) with a diameter of 27.6 feet (8.4 meters), will store cryogenic liquid hydrogen and liquid oxygen that will feed the rocket's four RS-25 engines.

Welding and joining technologies are fundamental to engineering and manufacturing. Without the ability to make strong and durable connections between materials it would be impossible to produce the many different items we all rely on in our everyday lives – from the very large (buildings, pipelines, trains and bridges) to the very small (medical implants and electronic devices).

Weld Boathouse was built on the Charles River in 1906. It serves many boating, rowing, and scullling functions. Harvard's main intercollegiate rowing teams use another boathouse. Eliot House is in the background. The tower of another residence house is at the far right.

A.G. Welding is a fabrication shop specializing in custom metalwork for manufacturing and visual displays as well as architectural and furniture components. The business is located in Garfield Park. A fun place to visit...so many specialized machines and projects underway! Great to see a thriving industry in our city that is so full of sad reminders of industries lost.
TWI has been at the forefront of the technological development of using lasers for materials processing since the mid-1960s, providing world-class support to many industries, including the automotive, shipbuilding and aerospace sectors.
Many variants of laser technology are currently used in production processes including cutting, welding, marking, surface engineering and direct parts fabrication. The range of applications covers metals, plastics, semiconductors and ceramics on a scale from sub-micron to several metres.
TWI has a number of laser facilities, and the development of laser processing for metals and non-metallic materials is carried out using a wide variety of laser sources operating at powers up to 7kW.

A ship breaker uses a welding torch to cut scrap metal into pieces small enough to hoist out of the ship.
Ship breaking is the manual disassembly of retired ships. Here in Jarkarta, they are being broken in the water and on the bare ground, allowing scrap and toxic waste to pollute the surrounding waters. Read more about ship breaking on Wikipedia.
