Many apartments in China have metal bars on them to keep out burglars. This man is making one of these using sunglasses for protection as he welds. I am very dubious as to whether sunglasses provide sufficient eye protection. However, things have progressed. When I first arrived, I often saw people who didn't wear any eye protection at all when welding. Photo was desaturated and a blue filter applied in Photoshop.

A.G. Welding is a fabrication shop specializing in custom metalwork for manufacturing and visual displays as well as architectural and furniture components. The business is located in Garfield Park. A fun place to visit...so many specialized machines and projects underway! Great to see a thriving industry in our city that is so full of sad reminders of industries lost.

A Union Pacific welded rail train is seen dropping steel along the Shoreline Subdivision. The train has enough rail on board to reach from BJ East to about Wiscona.
This is the drawing of the Barth 500V workbench showing the proposed steel welding table top I wanted fabricated to replace the stock plastic laminate covered plywood top that came with the bench. The factory top is fine for woodworking, but the holes in it are 22mm diameter which is proprietary to Barth forcing you to buy the Barth brand clamps and accessories which are very expensive and limited in scope.
As I started learning to weld, I quickly discovered that I wanted a proper steel welding table with conventional 16mm holes on a grid to accept the wide variety of welding clamps and fixturing components. Since I didn't have room for a dedicated welding table, I decided to convert the Barth workbench to dual purpose by replacing the factory supplied top with a proper steel welding top.
First step was to find a company to fabricate the top, so I came up with this drawing and emailed it to tabandslot.com - they make welding table kits and do custom laser cutting work. What I got back was this design from the owner Dave:
After some back and forth confirming specific dimensions and mounting, TabAndSlot fabricated the kit and shipped it to me via UPS freight in 3 heavy packages. The top consists of four top plates as shown in this drawing, and a matrix rib structure underneath the top plates that makes the top dead flat and completely rigid.
Floor weld. Panels were put on top in two sections, welded on the top in the cab, then underneath to weld the diagonal section to the horizontal one.
This newly built bathroom was slowly sinking into the basement.

A ship breaker uses a welding torch to cut scrap metal into pieces small enough to hoist out of the ship.
Ship breaking is the manual disassembly of retired ships. Here in Jarkarta, they are being broken in the water and on the bare ground, allowing scrap and toxic waste to pollute the surrounding waters. Read more about ship breaking on Wikipedia.

Welding the two ends of one of the new expansion joints on the westbound I-90 East Channel Bridge near Mercer Island, WA is underway.
The expansion joint, when welded together, is 82 feet long. There is a new expansion joint at the east end of the bridge and another near the west end of the bridge.
The center point of both expansion joints need to be welded together. That allows the joint to work and move as one piece with the bridge itself.
Welding the ends together will take 30 hours or more. The welder starts with the center beam and after that is completed will move to the others.
New expansion joints on the East Channel Bridge were necessary because the previous joints were deteriorating. At 33 years old, the steel had cracked in many spots and the rubber seal was broken.
Replacing the expansion joints was necessary to preserve the bridge and ensure the safety of drivers.

The welder concentrates first on welding together the two bars at the center of the expansion joint.
They've been very carefully aligned with eachother.
Welding all the ends together on this expansion joint will take more than 30 hours because it requires many passes.
This is one of two new expansion joints on the East Channel Bridge.
WSDOT replaced the expansion joints on the bridge in July 2014 because the previous expansion joints were 33 years old and showing their age. The steel had cracked, the rubber seal was broken.
Replacing the joints preserves the bridge and helps ensure the safety of drivers who use it every day.
