Supermoon and abandoned railroad bridge. Night photography fro a bobbing canoe is pretty hard so I played the odds and took enough photos that a few had to come out somewhat clearer. Not great but ok.
Buffalo was once a national center of heavy industry. It still has one of the nation's most versatile and dense rail hubs. Until the 1980s the shores of the river were lined edge to edge with heavy industry. Steel, Iron, chemicals, grain, cement, petroleum and many smaller industries once hummed 24/7. Now the shores are largely abandoned, although once can still see the sea walls, pilings and remnants of docks where the massive lake freighters navigated up through the Buffalo River's sinuous channels to park...often 5 end to end and 3 deep. UNlike the massive silos down the river, nearer to Lake Erie, these industries were torn down, the buildings razed and the machinery sold for scrap. It's amazing how little remains of the some of the world's most powerful industrial centers....Only the docks and sheet pilings show where freighters docked and unloaded piles of ore, limestone and coal that reached several stories tall. They are eerie, weedy overgrown fields. The railroad bridges also still remain and are still part of one of the nation's important rail hubs connecting Lake Erie to the interior of the US.
The legacy of Buffalo's industry can be seen in the incredibly ornate buildings and rich history. HOwever another legacy of these industries is some extreme pollution. In the 1980s when the last of the heavy industry closed the land around this river was so badly contaminated as to be uninhabitable. The river itself was essentially dead. It had a permanent rainbow hue and smelled like petroleum. The mud is contaminated with almost every chemical and metal one can think of and almost no life could survive...except for noxious invasive weeds and species. In 1968 the river caught fire as a welder's spark ignited thick, goopy mats of crude oil. Sewage poured in and at times the industries drew so much water for cooling that the river flowed in reverse and the temperature changed. As mentioned above ships once choked the harbor, necessitating creation of mazes of canals, intensive dredging, hardening of shorelines all which changed the flow and ecology of the river forever.
The river is slowly recovering due to EPA regulations and loss of industry. While they were awe inspiring and spawned great wealth and innovation for about 70 years their legacy is mixed. Perhaps if they were still employing tens of thousands workers and building the local economy one could possibly forgive their uninformed and sloppy environmental past, and feel more sympathy for their plight in the modern world. When they locked the gates for the last time they went away...no longer a legal person anymore....and consciously, legally, and deliberately, left their leaking tanks and pipes and transformers, and ponds of chemicals, piles of slag, radioactivity, mounds of asbestos, soot and coke waste, etc... Thus rebuilding the river and protecting it is now more important because the benefits of business are just too fleeting to be justified. This night trip reminds me that the river is for people and should not be allowed to degrade so badly again.
A wonderful night, warm with a pleasant breeze, pleasent company and a huge full moon to light the way. What more could one ask for?

Pill Harriers RFC are a Welsh rugby union club based in Newport in South Wales. The club is a member of the Welsh Rugby Union and is a feeder club for the Newport Gwent Dragons.
At the end of Jeddo Street, Baldwin Street and Marion Street in Pill was an area of bogland which was filled with ballast from ships calling at the Old Town Dock, North Dock and Alexandra Dock. The local Pill boys played many games on ‘The ballast’ as it was then called. They played baseball, football and their own brand of rugby.
Eventually a team was formed to play general sports called ‘The Curb Stone Dashers’. The jerseys were black or navy seaman’s jerseys. They played for about three years and then in 1879-80 Liverpool House opened, an establishment that employed a lot of young people with the intention of keeping them out of trouble. With the influx of the Curb Stone Dashers they turned to rugby.
In about 1881-82 Lord Tredegar gave the people of Pill a ground on built up swampland on the 'Mendalgief'.
At this time Liverpool House went to the Pill ground, and with the dockers and coaltrimmers formed Pill Harriers RFC.
The first season was successful and saw the club reaching the semi-finals of the Newport Challenge cup.
Although the Pill Harriers Athletic Club provided facilities for all sports, it was rugby that had pride of place. After the turn of the century Pill became one of the strongest sides in the area becoming Monmouthshire League Champions five times and runners up three times between 1902 and 1912. During this period Pill Harriers provided a stream of intelligent, strong players who would first move to first class team Newport before playing for Wales. George "Twyber" Travers, rugby’s first specialist hooker, gained 25 caps between 1903 and 1911, George Boots gained 16 caps between 1908 and 1904, Tommy Vile who would become president of the WRU and Gus Merry who gained 2 caps in 1912. Gus's caps and photos were donated to the Pill Harriers club in about 1996 by his great-nephew Glyn Maggs.
On 12 April 1919, Pill Harriers played host to the touring New Zealand Army team. 10,000 people turned up at Mendalgief Road to watch George Boots lead out the Harriers to a respectable 0-0 draw.
After the first World War came the Harriers' most successful season ever, playing 32 games, winning 30, drawing 2 and scoring a total of 737 points. In the course of the ‘invincible season’ the club fielded at least 8 players who were to gain international honours when later playing for other clubs. Two players were capped from the Harriers at this time – Jerry Shea and Jack Whitfield. Both players went on to gain further caps whilst playing for Newport.
The Harriers continued to grow until the outbreak of war in 1939, when the ground was taken over for vital industrial purposes. The club was closed down for the duration of hostilities. A new pitch in Pill was unavailable at the end of the war and no alternative was found. Therefore, on 3 June 1947 one of the most famous clubs in South Wales was wound up.
In 1978, the Pill Harriers was reformed by the amalgamation of two local clubs, Newport Hibernians and Pill Labour.
The first season was successful with the club involved in four finals whilst reaching the semi-finals of the Welsh Brewers Cup. During this early period, Pill gained success in all competitions proving their versatility in both 15 and 7-a-side games. Honours for many individual players followed with many representing the club at Newport and district level whilst Gerald Palmer and Tommy Corten gained caps at Welsh District level.
The success on the pitch was soon to result in the Harriers opening their new pitch Pill Grounds followed by the building of a clubhouse and changing rooms.
In 1986, Pill Harriers gained Welsh Rugby Union membership, and they entered the Monmouthshire league. Pill continued the success of previous years winning the third and second divisions in consecutive years. In 1987 Pill registered its most famous victory when defeating Newport RFC at Rodney Parade 12-4.
Once again individual honours were gained in the form of Monmouthshire caps by Matthew Clarke, Stan Henshaw, Keiran O’Connell and Jeff Harris.

I thought that the photos in the Versatile challenge weren't getting their share of the fun. Flickr only pushes threads (discussions) to the top when it senses a new post. Because in this challenge we build up our post over the month, it only gets a showing on the days a new post is started.
I asked Linda if I could do a 'Versatile' montage. On saying yes I set to to have a go. This is pure DIY. A blank file, with downloaded files placed individually into place, saved, and titles added. The photos were different sizes so I shrunk them to make them all the same height - 500 pixels. This is my fourth go/version of the montage.
One photo per challenge (the challenge is to take a photo for each of the 10 subjects each month) - and at least one photo from everyones post.
Once I got this one finished and more or less presentable, I tried using the Photoshop E13 collage - a pathetic app. They probably sell better ones in their app store, but there is only the one in the program.
I tried the Picasa collage and it is also pathetic. I couldn't change the order - it worked the first time, but never again after that. I have a very low boredom threshold, and the computer is just this side of the bin. Grrrrr.
The versatile speedster picked up from the Pirates during the season played right field tonight. After a fast start, his average has tailed off to his more usual level.
Earth Designs Garden Design and Build were asked to created a landscape and propose garden design in Acton, London*. Here are the details of the project
Brief: The plot for this design was a mid-size family garden, which had recently benefited from the addition of a large sunroom on the back of the property. It was a fairly blank canvas, with nothing of note to be retained in the re-design. The garden had side access and worn boundary fences which required replacing. There was no clear brief other than that the design include a seating area and some lawn, and that the transition from sunroom to garden be fairly seamless.
Solution: The focus of this design was to create an exterior space that serves as an extension to the interior, featuring several distinct and versatile areas that can be adapted to a variety of uses.
The garden's boundaries were replaced with new fencing to provide a uniform and attractive backdrop to the transformation within, while the long sideway down the right of the house was renovated with the addition of attractive 'bamboo' slate tile flooring in a random lay pattern.
The first section of the space comprises a large area of Western Red Cedar decking adjoining the house, and offers ample room for entertaining, with a long L-shaped fixed-bench seat stretching width-ways across the space from the left-hand side to the centre. This was backed with a rendered block raised bed, planted with fragrant lavender and capped with 'bamboo' slate tile, to provide a sense of enclosure and separation from the rest of the garden.
A decked walkway running down the right hand side of the space provides access to a 'spa' area, featuring a large square hot tub housed upon a reinforced paved hard-standing and nestled between existing and additional trees, shrubs and foliage to provide a secluded and intimate area for bathing throughout the seasons. Hidden behind mature and new planting in the bottom left corner, a large shed provides ample storage for the client's garden accessories. The middle of the space has been given over to a large lawn edges with slate.
A purple and yellow planting scheme of soft, cottage-style evergreen shrubs and flowering perennials will help to bring year round lightness and subtle colouring to the space.
After-dark hot tub bathing is enhanced by several strings of pea-lights woven through the existing shrubbery. Deck lights demark the main area of decking and guide one's journey along the decked walkway. Finally, spot lights in the beds highlight certain area while providing a gentle wash throughout the space.
Testimonial: "After months of planning and a full year of having builders everywhere, we had finally got the house into good shape but the garden was a nightmare. It had been somewhat overgrown before the builders moved in, but after a year of being used as a builders yard, it needed shock treatment.
We needed help fast so we searched the web. We were looking for garden designers with creative ideas for smaller London gardens. We didn't want anything too traditional but at the same time, nothing too extreme.
Earth Designs fitted the bill and after a design session with Katrina, we engaged them for the project. They had offered us a design service only, but as we only had a 4 week window in which to complete the job, we gave them the whole project.
We had built a new extension with wide glass doors that opened out into the garden, so the brief to Earth Designs was to "bring the outside, inside" and create a strong link between the new room and the garden beyond. The actual garden space was not large so we wanted to use the space as an extension of the living space - to be an "outside room".
Monday 18th April and three very charming men arrived on our doorstep at 8.0am sharp. Arlo was the project manager, ably aided and abetted by Paul and Phillip. They worked brilliantly as a team and always hit all the deadlines. In particular they did a great job in working with our neighbours to ensure the whole project ran smoothly.
The first week involved clearing the site - no mean feat with 30-year-old ivy stems that looked more like tree trunks.
The second week involved levelling the garden, putting up new fencing, building the corner seating base and planters, plus marking out the garden shape. It was good to be able to make minor changes to the design on the ground at this stage. The hot tub arrived too and was winched into place for connection later.
Week 3 saw the decking and seating built.
Then in week four the turf arrived, the lawn went down and on the last day, Katrina arrived with a truckload of wonderful specimens (and Matt) and we had a wonderful time planting. Ground Force Mk II - a complete garden from start to finish in just 4 weeks!
There were a few things that needed to be sorted out after the main work was complete. Earth Designs were great about coming back until all was complete and finished.

Australian actress Cate Blanchett (1969) is one of the best performers of her generation. She is known for her versatile work in independent films, blockbusters and drama. She has received two Oscars, four British Academy Film Awards and four Golden Globes.
Catherine Élise ‘Cate’ Blanchett was born in Ivanhoe, a suburb of Melbourne in 1969. Her American father Robert DeWitt Blanchett Jr. was a Texas naval officer who became an advertising executive, and her Australian mother June (née Gamble), was a property developer and teacher. They met when Robert's ship broke down in Melbourne. Cate is the second of three children, with an older brother and a younger sister. When Blanchett was ten, her father died of a heart attack, leaving her mother to raise the family. During her teenage years, Cate had a penchant for dressing in traditionally masculine clothing, and went through goth and punk phases, at one point shaving her head. After high school, she began a degree in economics and fine arts at the University of Melbourne but dropped out after one year to travel overseas. While in Egypt, Blanchett was asked to be an extra as an American cheerleader in the Egyptian boxing film Kaboria (Khairy Beshara, 1990). In need of money, she accepted the job. On returning to Australia, she moved to Sydney and enrolled at the National Institute of Dramatic Art (NIDA). Blanchett in 1992, after which she joined the Sydney Theatre Company. There she starred in ‘Top Girls’. In 1993, she won two major theatre awards, the Newcomer Award from the Sydney Theatre Critics Circle for her role in the musical ‘Kafka Dances’, and the Rosemont Best Actress Award for her role in David Mamet's ‘Oleanna’, in which she starred opposite Geoffrey Rush. After this, she moved into television. Among others, she starred in the popular series Heartland (1994) and Police Rescue (1994). She received purely positive reviews for her roles and her television and theatre careers prospered. In 1997, Blanchett made her film debut in the American-Australian production Paradise Road (Bruce Beresford, 1997). In this prisoner-of-war drama, she starred as an Australian nurse captured by the Japanese Army during World War II opposite Glenn Close and Frances McDormand. For her second film, the romantic comedy Thank God He Met Lizzie (Cherie Nowlan, 1997), she won the Australian Film Institute's Best Actress Award. Her role as eccentric heiress Lucinda Leplastrier in the romantic drama Oscar and Lucinda (Gillian Armstrong, 1997), opposite Ralph Fiennes, got her attention from abroad. In 1998, she played the role of young Queen Elizabeth I of England in the British drama Elizabeth (Shekhar Kapur., 1998). The film received eight Oscar nominations, including one for Best Actress, for Blanchett. She lost the Oscar to Gwyneth Paltrow, but she did receive a Golden Globe. The following year, she acted in such films as Pushing Tin (Mike Newell, 1999), An Ideal Husband (1999) and The Talented Mr Ripley (Anthony Minghella, 1999), starring Matt Damon as Tom Ripley.
More international roles in a wide variety of international films followed for Cate Blanchett. In the new century, she did mystery in Sam Raimi's The Gift, comedy in Bandits (Barry Levinson, 2001) with Billy Bob Thornton and Bruce Willis, and drama with Giovanni Ribisi in Heaven (Tom Tykwer, 2002). She reached a whole new audience with the role of the elf leader Galadriel in Peter Jackson's Blockbuster The Lord of the Rings trilogy: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001), The Two Towers (2002), and The Return of the King (2003). Later, she played the role of Galadriel again in the story that precedes The Lord of the Rings, the Hobbit trilogy: An Unexpected Journey (Peter Jackson, 2012), The Desolation of Smaug (Peter Jackson, 2013), and The Battle of the Five Armies (Peter Jackson, 2014). She played the title role in Veronica Guerin (Joel Schumacher, 2003) and played Katharine Hepburn in The Aviator (Martin Scorsese, 2004) opposite Leonardo DiCaprio. For this role, she won the Oscar for Best Female Supporting Actor. Roger Ebert lauded the performance, describing it as "delightful and yet touching; mannered and tomboyish". In 2004, she played a pregnant journalist in the adventure comedy-drama The Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou (Wes Anderson, 2004) starring Bill Murray as Steve Zissou, an eccentric oceanographer who sets out with his crew to exact revenge on the ‘jaguar shark’ that ate his partner Esteban. During the shooting of the film, she was also pregnant in real life. After this, she returned to Australia for the film Little Fish (Rowan Woods, 2005) in which she played an ex-drug addict. She acted opposite Brad Pitt in the acclaimed psychological drama Babel (Alejandro González Iñárritu, 2006). For the psychological thriller Notes on a Scandal (Richard Eyre, 2006) opposite Dame Judi Dench, she was nominated for an Oscar in the ‘Best Supporting Actress category. In 2007, she played the role of Queen Elizabeth for the second time, in Elizabeth: The Golden Age (Shekhar Kapur, 2007). That year, she also starred as Jude Quinn, one of six incarnations of Bob Dylan in the experimental film I'm Not There (Todd Hayes, 2007), for which she was awarded a Golden Globe. Roger Ebert said: "That Blanchett could appear in the same Toronto International Film Festival playing Elizabeth and Bob Dylan, both splendidly, is a wonder of acting." Next, Blanchett appeared in Steven Spielberg's Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (2008), as the villainous KGB agent Col. Dr. Irina Spalko. That year, she also starred alongside Brad Pitt in David Fincher's Oscar-nominated The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (2008). Blanchett and her husband Andrew Upton became co-CEOs and artistic directors of the Sydney Theatre Company. In 2009, she returned to acting in the theatre with the Sydney Theatre Company. In 2010, Blanchett starred as Lady Marion opposite Russell Crowe's titular hero in Ridley Scott's epic Robin Hood. Blanchett won an Oscar in 2013 for the lead role of Jasmine in the tragicomedy Blue Jasmine (Woody Allen, 2013). Blanchett starred as Lydia Tár, a fictional renowned conductor, in Tár (Todd Field, 2022). Her performance received rave reviews. For the performance, Blanchett won her second Volpi Cup for best actress, her fourth Golden Globe Award and her fourth BAFTA Award. Subsequently, she received her eighth Oscar nomination. In 2023, Blanchett co-starred in the Australian drama film The New Boy (Warwick Thornton, 2023), which she also produced. It follows a young Aboriginal Australian orphan boy who is brought into a Christian monastery, run by a renegade nun, where he begins to question his faith and loyalty to his heritage. In 1997, Cate Blanchett married playwright Andrew Upton. They have three sons together and adopted a daughter in 2015.

Goose down lining is nice, but it gets too warm most of the time.
I am finally retiring two winter jackets which has kept me warm (but not necessarily comfortable) and alive for the last 15 and 12 (?) years respectively, and in particular, after I moved from the mild climate of southern Arizona to the harsh, arctic climate of Chicago. Coming from Hong Kong, I did not have the adequate knowledge for choosing the right jacket at the time. Now I got a discounted brand new North Face Vortex Triclimate Jacket. I wore it for the first day, and I was already impressed. The design is thoughtful and functional, without the bulkiness of my old gear. I cannot wait to travel to South America with this versatile darling jacket.
