Versatile Peruvian Zinnias are at home in cottage gardens, as a mass planting, and among meadow flowers. An easy-care annual wildflower that will bloom all summer, it produces an abundance of red, nectar-rich flowers that attract butterflies and bees. The 1-1/2" diameter blooms perch on tall stems, making them delightful as cut flowers, too. Peruvian Zinnia is native to the Southwest US; it prefers full sun and, once established, tolerates dry soils, though it adapts to most soil types. Direct sow seeds in the garden after all danger of frost is past, or get a head start by sowing seeds indoors about a month before your last spring frost date. If you allow some flowers to mature and form seedpods, the seeds may self-sow and, in mild climates, create a naturalized planting that will return every year.

Alfie Smith is a singer, prolific songwriter, an accomplished performer and talented multi-instrumentalist. He was on the stage at least at 4 performances at the recent 'Winterfolk Festival' in Toronto. He is more into folk and blues, so since I prefer jazz, I do not get to see him often.
'Winterfolk Festival' featured some 80 shows on one weekend and for $30 all inclusive pass you get introduced to some interesting music. OK, food and drink is not included. He performed with a living legend of Canada's folk scene David Essig and Kevin Breit, one of the most versatile jazz and blues guitarist in the city.

Two evenings ago I was getting ready to run out for the moonrise, when I remembered... I don't have a tripod! I broke a leg on my 12-year old tripod recently, trying to leverage myself out of deep snow; a new one has shipped but it hasn't arrived yet.
I could boost the ISO and apply noise reduction - and live with the loss in quality. Or... I could get out the trusty old beanbag! I opted for the latter, laying it flat on the roof of the rolling red Toyota blind - engine off - and for this shoot I also resurrected the 200-500mm lens. It may not be quite as sharp as my 500 prime, but I love the versatility of that zoom range, and really the optics are fine. And the combination was fine, too, as I managed to salvage the evening.
Here the moon has risen above 70 Mile Butte, highest point in Grasslands Park. Those tiny knobby things you may see all along the ridge top are Mule Deer.

The Australian magpie (Gymnorhina tibicen) is a medium-sized black and white passerine bird native to Australia and southern New Guinea. Although once considered to be three separate species, it is now considered to be one, with nine recognised subspecies. A member of the Artamidae, the Australian magpie is placed in its own genus and is most closely related to the black butcherbird (Melloria quoyi). Currawongs have yellow eyes, whereas Magpies have red-brown eyes and Butcherbirds have very dark brown, almost black eyes. It is not, however, closely related to the European magpie, which is a corvid. The adult Australian magpie is a fairly robust bird ranging from 37 to 43 cm in length, with distinctive black and white plumage, gold brown eyes and a solid wedge-shaped bluish-white and black bill. The male and female are similar in appearance, and can be distinguished by differences in back markings. The male has pure white feathers on the back of the head and the female has white blending to grey feathers on the back of the head. With its long legs, the Australian magpie walks rather than waddles or hops and spends much time on the ground. Described as one of Australia's most accomplished songbirds, the Australian magpie has an array of complex vocalisations. It is omnivorous, with the bulk of its varied diet made up of invertebrates. It is generally sedentary and territorial throughout its range. Common and widespread, it has adapted well to human habitation and is a familiar bird of parks, gardens and farmland in Australia and New Guinea. This species is commonly fed by households around the country, but in spring (and occasionally in autumn) a small minority of breeding magpies (almost always males) become aggressive and swoop and attack those who approach their nests.
The common raven (Corvus corax), also known as the northern raven, is a large all-black passerine bird. Found across the Northern Hemisphere, it is the most widely distributed of all corvids. There are at least eight subspecies with little variation in appearance, although recent research has demonstrated significant genetic differences among populations from various regions. It is one of the two largest corvids, alongside the thick-billed raven, and is possibly the heaviest passerine bird; at maturity, the common raven averages 63 centimetres in length and 1.2 kilograms in mass. Common ravens can live up to 21 years in the wild, a lifespan surpassed among passerines by only a few Australasian species such as the satin bowerbird and probably the lyrebirds. Young birds may travel in flocks but later mate for life, with each mated pair defending a territory. Common ravens have coexisted with humans for thousands of years and in some areas have been so numerous that people have regarded them as pests. Part of their success as a species is due to their omnivorous diet; they are extremely versatile and opportunistic in finding sources of nutrition, feeding on carrion, insects, cereal grains, berries, fruit, small animals, nesting birds, and food waste. Some notable feats of problem-solving provide evidence that the common raven is unusually intelligent. Over the centuries, it has been the subject of mythology, folklore, art, and literature. In many cultures, including the indigenous cultures of Scandinavia, ancient Ireland and Wales, Bhutan, the northwest coast of North America, and Siberia and northeast Asia, the common raven has been revered as a spiritual figure or godlike creature. 67375

What a versatile plant. I was aware that the Hibiscus can be used for tea. However, dried Hibiscus is edible, can be used as a candy and as a garnish.
When reading more about this plant, Wikipedia stated, "Contrary to popular assumptions that the flowers or petals are what is being eaten, it is the calyces." If you want clarification, just check out the link below.

I used a decorative drinking glass (that I bought to use as a vase), and laid it down in front of two pieces of colored acrylic. The color in the glass is only at the bottom of the glass, the rest of the tumbler is clear!

Bosnia and Herzegovina often known informally as Bosnia, is a country in Southeast Europe, located within the Balkans. Sarajevo is the capital and largest city. Bosnia is not entirely a landlocked country as it may appear on a map – to the south it has a narrow coast on the Adriatic Sea long and surrounds the town of Neum. Many people still associate the country with the break-up of Yugoslavia in the heartbreaking civil war of the 1990's. The scars from that time are all still visible. But today's tourist are likely to remember the country for its friendly, modest and warm people. The country has turned into an exciting and versatile travel destination, with beautiful mountains, numerous medieval castle ruins, seven major rivers, impressive waterfalls. Overall, nearly 50% of Bosnia is forested. A country where Eastern and Western civilizations have met over the centuries. Today integration into the European Union is one of the main political objectives of Bosnia and Herzegovina. The local currency is the Bosnian mark. The euro is also accepted. Islam is the majority faith in Bosnia and Herzegovina, but also Orthodox Christianity, and Roman Catholicism are all present. The wild and unspoilt nature makes it an ideal place for both adventurers and nature lovers. Mostar is the largest city in Hercegovina, with a small but thoroughly enchanting old town centre. Mostar has been most famous for this beautiful historic Ottoman-style Stari Most bridge, which spanned the Neretva river in what is considered the historic center of the city.
Mostar is situated on the Neretva River. Mostar was named after the bridge keepers (mostari) who in the medieval times guarded the Stari Most (Old Bridge) over the Neretva. The Old Bridge, built by the Ottomans (Turkish tribes) in the 16th century, is one of Bosnia and Herzegovina's most visited landmarks. The bridge was destroyed during the Bosnian War. The European Union has spent more than $ 15 million on restoration. The restoration was finished in 2004. In 2005, UNESCO inscribed the Old Bridge and its closest vicinity onto the World Heritage List. Today it is the city’s crown jewel, a grand stone bridge which sweeps across the water, making it the most photographed landmark in the entire country for good reason.

Up to the early 1950s, this one was used by a knife grinder. He would take the train from Luton to London and then cycle back through the villages sharpening knives and scissors. He operated the grinding wheel by pedalling (the bicycle being on the stand). Luton Transport Museum, Stockwood Park; Leica M8, Voigtlaender NC 35/1.4.

A simple yet versatile Shure stereo audio mixer, still in production over 25 years since its introduction. This mixer accommodates two microphones and three stereo sources, plus a feature set designed for ease of use.
At work, I put this model of mixer and a stereo amplifier in a road case as part of a simple sound system that could easily accommodate a microphone and, say, a CD player (this was about 25 years ago, for a service we discontinued during the pandemic). One useful feature I turned on reduced the stereo input levels whenever the microphone was used, reducing the number of knobs to turn before and after using the mike from up to four down to just one, or even eliminating the need altogether if the mike had an on/off switch built in.
For size reference, the center of each knob is spaced one inch (25.4mm) apart from each other.

I saw this flower at the National Botanic Gardens of Wales two weeks ago. Each stem seemed to have two different kinds of blossom - vertical columns of rich burgundy blooms and a single pink flower on the top. I wished I could have stayed around to see how it progressed over a number of days.
