The School of Music presents visiting artists, the Atlantic Brass Quintet, in a master class. Free and open to the public, the class will feature USM student soloists and ensembles performing for critical review and advice by members of the Quintet, sitting in with the student musicians for side-by-side demonstrations.

Widely acclaimed as one of the world's finest and most versatile brass chamber ensembles, the Atlantic Brass Quintet has performed in 48 of the United States and dozens of countries across four continents. Atlantic specializes in masterful and vibrant presentations of repertoire spanning five centuries and a broad spectrum of styles, from Bach and Brahms to Mehldau and Monk to Brazil and the Balkans. Winner of six international chamber music competitions, the Quintet's distinctive sound, impeccable ensemble, stunning virtuosity, and warm, inviting stage presence have won praise from scores of critics.
Founded in 1985, the Atlantic Brass Quintet launched its career with a phenomenal string of competition victories over a period of two years. Grand prizes include the Coleman Chamber Music Competition, Carmel Chamber Music Society Competition, the Shoreline Alliance Chamber Music Competition, the Summit Brass First International Brass Ensemble Competition, and the Rafael Mendez International Brass Quintet Competition. Following these remarkable achievements, the ABQ was honored by Musical America by being named "Young Artists of 1988". In May 1992, by unanimous decision, the Quintet won the "Premiere Prix" at the International Brass Competition of Narbonne, France, recognized worldwide as the preeminent competition of its kind.
Highlights in the Quintet's busy concert career include performances at Carnegie Hall, Weill Recital Hall, the Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival, the Fleet Boston Celebrity Series, Tanglewood, and the White House.
Atlantic has been the resident brass quintet of Boston University, the Boston University Tanglewood Institute, and the Boston Conservatory. The Atlantic Brass Quintet Seminar, an annual residential immersive summer program established in 1993, endures as one of the most popular summer destinations for both student and professional brass players.

A 27.5x3” tire measures out to a 29” diameter and a 26x3” tire measures out to a 27.5” diameter. Combining them with a 40mm rim, results in the ultimate combination of traction, roll-over and versatility without being too heavy, too bouncy, too tall or feeling lethargic on the trail.
TAPERED HEAD TUBE
Riding fast with control requires steering precision, which starts with the front of the bike. Stiffening this area results in less wheel deflection, more wheel control. A full 1.5” head tube and steerer would achieve this, but would add unnecessary weight and bulk, and limit stem choices. But a tapered 1 1 /8” to 1 1 /2” head tube serves up a significant increase in rough terrain tracking and stability without much of a weight penalty compared to standard 1 1 /8” systems.
SHORT CHAINSTAYS
The rear wheel tucks in with short chainstays. With a 12x148 rear hub, you’ve got a stiff and responsive rear end.
OUTBOARD CHAIN LINE
A 12x148 rear hub with 3mm offset chainrings minimizes the chance of chain to tire contact with short chainstays and “mid-fat” tires without compromising any pedaling efficiency to a wider q-factor.
WHY THRU AXLES?
Securing the rear wheel to the frame by threading a 12mm axle into the rear drop-outs is not only safer, it’s stiffer. The rear wheel tracks directly in line with the frame, for more precise handling, so you can go faster with more confidence. The increase in stiffness of a 15mm fork axle improves steering & handling significantly. It also puts less stress on the fork’s internals, improving fork durability and performance. The hub drop outs provide a self centering feature for the wheel for fast, easy installation.
FORGED BOTTOM BRACKET YOKE
A one-piece bottom bracket shell and drive-side chainstay yoke provide a strong and lightweight solution for the potential clearance issues of 3” tires and double chainrings.
TUBELESS
Benefits of a tubeless set-up are reduced rotating weight and the ability to use lower inflation pressures for greater traction without the risk of pinch flats. WTB TCS rims feature a tubeless UST “On-Ramp” profile providing a consistent fit between the rim and the tire for easy installation and inflation.
180MM FRONT ROTORS
Bigger wheels and tires generate more rotating mass and traction once they are up to speed. So it only makes sense to use larger rotors to help control that larger wheel in the most efficient manner possible. Sure, 160mm rotors will stop the bike. But when you’re riding like every second counts, braking for the shortest time possible while keeping the bike under control is the goal. And a larger 180mm rotor up front let’s you do this.

1941 Chevrolet AK Series Pickup

History: The 1941 Chevrolet AK Series pickup brought to the General Motors light-truck lineup a new sense of strength in design and engineering. Knowing their products might soon be rolling into World War II encouraged truck makers to design stronger, more versatile new models for the early 1940s. This was Chevy's broadest commercial truck lineup yet.
The 1941 truck design was related to the passenger cars, beveled grille bars were horizontal in the upper section, vertical below; headlamps sunk partly into the front fenders. All this added up to quite a streamlined Chevy, more modern looking than the T-series Dodge and the 1941 Ford, if not quite as sleek as the new Studebaker M-series or International's K-line.
A crank-open windshield and metal-framed door windows were new features, while the wide, comfortable seat used a latex-bound hair pad on coil springs. Brochures noted a tailgate "heavily reinforced with box-type girders and channels, welded to form an all-steel unit of extraordinary strength and rigidity" and fitted with an "anti-rattle fastening."
Pickups came in 1/2- and 3/4-ton versions, the latter on a longer 125-inch wheelbase. Boxes were heavy-gauge steel with a durable wooden floor, reinforced and protected with steel skid strips.

This is the Versatile Wrap Skirt from Make It Perfect patterns. I used the Secret Garden and Stained Glass prints from Patty Young's Mezzanine line. They are soooo bright, and I really love them, but I was hard pressed to find a top that goes well with these fabrics. The pink one I made just didn't work with this style skirt, so this white tank top (Ottobre Woman 2/07) is temporarily standing in until I find something else.
