The Volvo V70 is a versatile car. The V in V70 stands for versatile (S70 = saloon, C70 = Coupe).

Here the load carrying capabilities of a V70 are demonstrated. I am taking an internal door (see a previous photo) to the local paint strippers premises.

For loads that are longer than will fit in the load area the seats can be folded.

The rear passenger seat squabs (the bottom part of the seat) can be lifted to form a small bulkhead, then the remaining seat back is folded down. This forms a completely flat area from the tailgate to this newly created bulkhead.

For longer loads, the front passengers seat has two catches on the rear that allow the seat back to be folded forward. If required the rear seat squabs can also be removed, thus removing the bulkhead.

In this way a nearly 2 metre long house door can be loaded into the car, the tailgate can be closed, there is no obstruction to the cars controls or view out of the windows.

Oh, and I nearly forgot...

Fold everything back into place and you have a 5 seater, with capacity for an extra 2 in the load area - a seat folds out from the floor to form a rear facing double seat suitable for children. Thats what the two rear most seatbelts are for. This is a factory fitted option.

There is also an integrated booster seat located in the centre position of the rear seat. It is to be used by children who weigh between 15 and 36 kg and are between 97 and 137cm in height. It should not be used by children less than 3 years old

I don't believe there are many cars that are so versatile in this respect.

Dustin Hoffman (1937) is an Oscar–winning American actor with a career in film, television, and theater since 1960. Hoffman has been known for his versatile portrayals of antiheroes and vulnerable characters. He has earned acclaim for his work in such films as The Graduate (1967), Kramer vs. Kramer (1979) and Rain Man (1988). Hoffman made his directorial debut with Quartet (2012).

Dustin Lee Hoffman was born in Los Angeles, California, in 1937. His parents were Lillian and Harry Hoffman. Although he is Jewish, Hoffman and his brother were raised in a relatively secular household. Hoffman's acting career began at age 19, when he dropped out of college to pursue the stage at the Pasadena Playhouse. There, Hoffman befriended another young actor, Gene Hackman. Eventually, the two would both move to New York City where they lived together with Robert Duvall, all three of them looking for work in television and off-Broadway plays. Hoffman studied at Actors Studio and became a dedicated method actor. To make ends meet, he took odd jobs and the occasional bit role. Slowly but surely, Hoffman began building a strong reputation through smaller roles. Hoffman acted in a few Broadway productions, including the play, Eh? in 1966, for which he won a Theatre World Award and a Drama Desk Award. Word of mouth soon reached Hollywood, and Hoffman made his film debut in The Tiger Makes Out (1967), alongside Eli Wallach. In 1966, director Mike Nichols auditioned Hoffman for a lead role in the Broadway musical The Apple Tree, but rejected him because he could not sing well enough and gave Alan Alda the part. But Nichols was so impressed with Hoffman's overall audition he cast him as Benjamin Braddock, who returns to his wealthy parents' home in California after graduating from college, in The Graduate (1967). This enormously popular movie changed the landscape of American cinema in the 1960s, and would in turn make Hoffman an unlikely star. In 1969, Hoffman struck gold again with the gritty Midnight Cowboy (John Schlesinger, 1969), in which he played the part of Ratso Rizzo, a homeless man in New York City. This performance garnered him a second Oscar nomination. Also in 1969, Hoffman co-starred with Mia Farrow in John and Mary (Peter Yates, 1969). He was nominated for a Golden Globe Award and received a 1970 BAFTA Award for his role, although the film received mixed reviews.

On a roll in the 1970s, Dustin Hoffman starred in several acclaimed movies, including Straw Dogs (Sam Peckinpah, 1971), Papillon (Franklin J. Schaffner, 1973), and Lenny (Bob Fosse, 1974). Another highlight was the political thriller All the President's Men (Alan J. Pakula, 1976) about the Watergate scandal, which starred Hoffman and Robert Redford as the real-life journalists, Carl Bernstein and Bob Woodward. Hoffman next starred in the thriller Marathon Man (John Schlesinger, 1976). based on William Goldman's novel of the same name, opposite Laurence Olivier and Roy Scheider He finally won an Academy Award for his performance in Kramer vs. Kramer (Robert Benton, 1979), with co-star Meryl Streep also nabbing an Oscar. In 1982, playing yet another antihero, Hoffman starred in the comedy Tootsie (Sydney Pollack, 1982) as Michael Dorsey, a down-and-out actor who must dress up as a woman to get a part on a daytime soap opera. Tootsie earned ten Academy Award nominations, including Hoffman's fifth nomination. Following a brief but successful return to the stage in Death of a Salesman and The Merchant of Venice, Hoffman starred in the Hollywood smash Rain Man (Barry Levinson, 1988) alongside Tom Cruise. Hoffman's portrayal of an autistic genius earned him a second Academy Award and remains one of his most iconic performances.

The 1990s brought Dustin Hoffman appearances in a series of big-budget movies that proved largely disappointing at the box office. He returned in the revenge drama/legal thriller Sleepers (Barry Levinson, 1996) with Robert De Niro, Brad Pitt, Jason Patric, and Kevin Bacon. Hoffman's next critically acclaimed role was in with the political satire Wag the Dog (Barry Levinson, 1997). Playing an unscrupulous Hollywood executive out to fool the public into thinking the country was at war, he scored yet another Oscar nomination. In 2004, Hoffman again exhibited his comedic prowess when he starred with Lily Tomlin in an offbeat movie about a detective team that solves existential crises, I Heart Huckabees (David O'Russell, 2004). Further cementing his new direction, he went on to appear in the Ben Stiller comedies Meet the Fockers (Jay Roach, 2004) and Little Fockers (Paul Weitz, 2010), and the children's fantasy Mr. Magorium's Wonder Emporium (Zach Helm, 2007). Hoffman continues to star in blockbuster films like Stranger than Fiction (2006), but also seeks out new and different projects, such as lending his voice to the animated children's movies Kung Fu Panda and The Tale of Despereaux (both 2008). He made his directorial debut in 2012 with Quartet, and in 2014 he joined the ensemble cast of Jon Favreau's critically acclaimed Chef. In 2016, he won the International Emmy Award for Best Actor for his work on Roald Dahl's Esio Trot. In the fall of 2017, after the Harvey Weinstein sexual harassment allegations rocked Hollywood, Hoffman became one of the actors forced to account for past behavior. Writer Anna Graham Hunter, who was 17 when she interned on the set of the Death of a Salesman TV movie in 1985, recounted the older actor asking about her sex life and groping her. In December, a new round of reports surfaced in which five women accused Hoffman of sexual assault or harassment, including accounts of the actor exposing himself and forced sexual activity. Hoffman denied. Apart from his successful professional work, Hoffman married Anne Byrne in 1969. He adopted her daughter, Karina, from a previous marriage, and in 1970 their second daughter, Jenna, was born. After more than 10 years of marriage, Hoffman and Anne divorced in 1980. Soon after, he married attorney Lisa Gottsegen. They would go on to have four children: Jacob Edward, Rebecca Lillian, Maxwell Geoffrey and Alexandra Lydia.

BRIEF:

The plot for this design was a mid-size family garden, which had recently benefited from the addition of a large sunroom on the back of the property. It was a fairly blank canvas, with nothing of note to be retained in the re-design. The garden had side access and worn boundary fences which required replacing. There was no clear brief other than that the design include a seating area and some lawn, and that the transition from sunroom to garden be fairly seamless

SOLUTION:

The focus of this design was to create an exterior space that serves as an extension to the interior, featuring several distinct and versatile areas that can be adapted to a variety of uses.

The garden's boundaries were replaced with new fencing to provide a uniform and attractive backdrop to the transformation within, while the long sideway down the right of the house was renovated with the addition of attractive 'bamboo' slate tile flooring in a random lay pattern.

The first section of the space comprises a large area of Western Red Cedar decking adjoining the house, and offers ample room for entertaining, with a long L-shaped fixed-bench seat stretching width-ways across the space from the left-hand side to the centre. This was backed with a rendered block raised bed, planted with fragrant lavender and capped with 'bamboo' slate tile, to provide a sense of enclosure and separation from the rest of the garden.

A decked walkway running down the right hand side of the space provides access to a 'spa' area, featuring a large square hot tub housed upon a reinforced paved hard-standing and nestled between existing and additional trees, shrubs and foliage to provide a secluded and intimate area for bathing throughout the seasons. Hidden behind mature and new planting in the bottom left corner, a large shed provides ample storage for the client's garden accessories. The middle of the space has been given over to a large lawn edges with slate.

A purple and yellow planting scheme of soft, cottage-style evergreen shrubs and flowering perennials will help to bring year round lightness and subtle colouring to the space.

After-dark hot tub bathing is enhanced by several strings of pea-lights woven through the existing shrubbery. Deck lights demark the main area of decking and guide one's journey along the decked walkway. Finally, spot lights in the beds highlight certain area while providing a gentle wash throughout the space.

TESTIMONIAL:

"After months of planning and a full year of having builders everywhere, we had finally got the house into good shape but the garden was a nightmare. It had been somewhat overgrown before the builders moved in, but after a year of being used as a builders yard, it needed shock treatment.

We needed help fast so we searched the web. We were looking for garden designers with creative ideas for smaller London gardens. We didn't want anything too traditional but at the same time, nothing too extreme.

Earth Designs fitted the bill and after a design session with Katrina, we engaged them for the project. They had offered us a design service only, but as we only had a 4 week window in which to complete the job, we gave them the whole project.

We had built a new extension with wide glass doors that opened out into the garden, so the brief to Earth Designs was to "bring the outside, inside" and create a strong link between the new room and the garden beyond. The actual garden space was not large so we wanted to use the space as an extension of the living space - to be an "outside room".

Monday 18th April and three very charming men arrived on our doorstep at 8.0am sharp. Arlo was the project manager, ably aided and abetted by Paul and Phillip. They worked brilliantly as a team and always hit all the deadlines. In particular they did a great job in working with our neighbours to ensure the whole project ran smoothly.

The first week involved clearing the site - no mean feat with 30-year-old ivy stems that looked more like tree trunks.

The second week involved levelling the garden, putting up new fencing, building the corner seating base and planters, plus marking out the garden shape. It was good to be able to make minor changes to the design on the ground at this stage. The hot tub arrived too and was winched into place for connection later.

Week 3 saw the decking and seating built.

Then in week four the turf arrived, the lawn went down and on the last day, Katrina arrived with a truckload of wonderful specimens (and Matt) and we had a wonderful time planting. Ground Force Mk II - a complete garden from start to finish in just 4 weeks!

There were a few things that needed to be sorted out after the main work was complete. Earth Designs were great about coming back until all was complete and finished.

Our thanks to Katrina, Matt, Arlo, Paul and Phillip for a great job, completed on time and on budget with a great looking result."

The Varsity was a versatile twin piston-engined aircraft brought into RAF service in 1951 for crew training as a replacement for the Wellington T10.

The aircraft had been designed three years earlier in response to an Air Ministry specification and had been put into production once proving trials and operational tests had been completed. To adapt the successful Valetta design for a general purpose crew trainer, the Varsity was given a nose-wheel undercarriage and an under fuselage pannier bomb-aimer's station. The Museum also has an example of the Valetta which is awaiting major restoration.

The most outstanding quality of the Varsity was that it could provide excellent training for pilots, flight engineers, radio operators, navigators and bomb aimers simultaneously. The latter were seated in a very large ventral gondola which contained bomb aiming equipment and a small quantity of training bombs.

The prototype Varsity T MkI made its maiden flight on 17 July 1949. The RAF took its first deliveries in October 1951 which went to No.201 Squadron, Advanced Flying School at Swinderby, Lincolnshire. Production of the Varsity T MkI for the RAF ceased on 28 February 1954 after a total of 163 had been built.

WL679 was built by Vickers Armstrong at Bournemouth and released from their factory on 25 September 1953. This was the last Varsity to fly with Royal Air Force Insignia, but in the very distinctive livery of the Royal Aircraft Establishment. It landed at RAF Cosford on 27 July 1992 and signalled the end of an era spanning over 43 years.

A remarkably versatile design; deep ballasted keel, short ends, high freeboard, considerable sheer and short rig make for a boat well suited both to heavy weather sailing and to the generally kinder conditions of the Med. This is where SANTA CLAUS II has spent her life, her owners benefitting from the well balanced fractional rig for easy sailing. Her sea kindliness and reliability have prompted Maurizio Adreani one of her former owners to expresses quite recently his continued great affection for her - considering she has always been loved by her owners as a boat worthwhile to be loved and having sailed nearly 70 years considers SANTA CLAUS a very good and reliable friend.

History

The boat was built in 1959 by Cantiere Ottonello of Varazze for Ing Paolo Ragazzi of Fiat, who had expressed his intention to go round the World in her. In the event he never made his World tour but made very good use of the yacht mainly in the Mediterranean.

Actually this boat is to the same design as ROLLING STONE IV, built earlier in 1955 - and incidentally considered to have been his last before retirement that year. That boat demonstrated her seaworthiness weathering a Gulf Stream gale near Bermuda in 1956 and several more off the US West Coast subsequently.

In the late 60s Sr Ragazzi sold to Guglielmo Coppola, owner of FIAM a leading Italian elevator factory, who was to keep SANTA CLAUS at Santa Margherita Ligure enjoying her also with his sons for about ten years.

By 1976 Coppola the father had given up sailing and the sons by then were more interested in faster craft so that they decided to sell her to Maurizio Adreani. Delighted that he had the chance of buying “this wonderful and reliable boat in spring of 1976” he enjoyed sailing SANTA CLAUS with his family and friends in the Mediterranean for about 20 years from A, Alassio to Varazze – so not quite Z but pretty well everywhere in between. With increasing age he decided to sell but was very happy that it was to an old friend (the late) Tito Gavazzi, who turned out to be very good and efficient owner who did much to update and improve the yacht to her present condition.

This photo shows some of the many ways in which stages can be used. They can be built as low as 3 inches and up to ten feet high and beyond.

The multi-level feature allows stages to be used as bleachers.

The angled stage makes possible 45 degree catwalks. An "X" can be created which would attach to an existing stage. Models/Actors could then move from the main stage out into the audience area and back.

Auditorium stage too small for a large performance? This type of stage can be built to any height so it will match the existing stage...problem solved ! It can even be built over auditorium seating.

The smooth ride of the full carbon fiber Expert and Elite bikes set the bar for how we designed the steel Exploit and Expat and aluminum Exile to ride. /m_editable

Securing the rear wheel to the frame by threading it into the rear dropouts is not only safer, it's stiffer. Increasing the rear axle diameter from 10mm to 12mm provides a stable platform for the disc braking forces and allows us to tune the rear seat stays for more compliance/comfort

Tubeless and wider rims across the range provide great benefits on any terrain. The tubeless benefits are to help prevent flats with sealant as well as being able to adjust your tire pressure for the perfect ride. For example on dirt roads you may want to reduce the tire pressure to increase your contact patch for better grip without the worry of pinch flatting. The beauty of the 23-24mm wider rims effectively gives you a constant and wide tire surface yielding better handling, stability and confidence with plenty of surface grip for control

Just in case you want to continue to push the boundaries, we added cable routing capability for a 27.2mm dropper post. Carbon-made Elite and Expert models have routing for an internal post while the Exploit is fitted for external.

After two years of testing and research we are able to provide even more comfort by reducing the seat post diameter on the carbon Renegade to 27.2mm. Through the combination of a new frame seat cluster and clamping configuration we were able to accentuate the benefits of top-down 27.2mm seatpost comfort while not compromising on side-to-side flex

Starting with a wide and consistent stack and reach range, we set out to design a frame that could handle on or off road conditions while maintaining a comfortable ride. As you start to review the geo chart you will noticed we have 3 different fork offsets, BB drops and rear center measurements. Add size specific tubing and 2 different sized rear triangles and you have what we feel is the perfect endurance geo for all sized riders. The reason for this is that we wanted the 48 and 61 to fit the rider correctly and make the geo changes needed to provide the perfect ride.

Size Specific Tubing

Size Specific Design (SSD) is the Jamis design philosophy and technique used to create the best possible riding bike for each size rider. Rather than limiting frame size variations to just different length top, seat and head tubes lengths, we take an all-inclusive look at each frame’s total configuration. Every SSD frame will also feature size-specific BB drop, rear center, fork offset/trail and SST technology.

ACE is our Internal Cable Guide System that is companionable with mechanical or Di2 shifting as well as hydraulic or mechanical braking. To keep shifting and braking performing best in any & all conditions, we’ve routed all cables internally on the new Renegade and designed a completely enclosed BB guide to keep cables clean, assuring precise shifts and sure stops in all conditions. And if you want to shift electronically, we’ve got you covered. Incorporated into our internal cable guide system are a few extra cable fittings that make the Renegade Di2 compatible

To make life easier we have repositioned each mount externally in a variety of easy-to-use locations. With a wide collection of fork and frame mounts you can now choose to mount fenders, rear carrier, low-rider front carrier (or two cages for water bottles/ storage) and three front triangle water bottles. This will open up the options wherever and whenever you chose to ride. Bad weather, commuting, trekking, touring – anything is possible.

Disc Brakes

With endurance geometry designed to go anywhere the only choice was disc brakes. Now the Renegade Elite, Expert and Exploit all come with hydraulic brakes. With hydraulic disc brakes you will have the most consistent and confidence-inspiring braking available. Just think about jamming down hill on a rutted out fire road with your hands all over the hoods…the power & modulation benefits of hydraulic disc brakes become readily apparent

Thru Axles

The 12mm Thru-Axle on our Renegades offer the benefit of increased stiffness and a quick release system without any downside. Designed specifically to counter-act the stress and pull of disc brake tourque, these forks won’t drift when brakes are applied.

How can children be introduced to new technologies? Our answer to this question was to create our own research laboratory just for children. With the Ars Electronica Kids’ Research Laboratory, a versatile playing field has been created that gives children time and space to play and discover our world, the digital as well as the analog, the natural as well as the artificial world. For children, the whole world is a laboratory in which experiments and research journeys are constantly taking place.

Original and versatile Monica Vitti (1931) is one of Italy's most famous actresses of the 20th century. She is most widely noted in the early 1960s for her starring roles in four classic avant-garde films directed by Michelangelo Antonioni. Later the glamorous blonde became the queen of the Commedia all’Italiana, a film genre previously restricted to men.

The U.S. Marshals Service held its 37th Director’s Honorary Awards Ceremony in the Great Hall of the Robert F. Kennedy Justice Building in Washington Nov. 1, presenting awards in 16 categories to 423 individuals and groups who distinguished themselves in a variety of ways during the past year.

In his keynote address, the AG said, praised the agency and its people. “I have been all around the world, and I firmly believe that no nation has a finer group of law officers than the United States of America … and of all of our law enforcement agencies, the Marshals are the most versatile and the oldest federal agency in American law enforcement.

“Yours is a storied law enforcement agency—but let’s remember something. The historic badge alone is not magic. The reason the Marshals Service has been so effective is you—the people who step forward to serve.

“Nearly 3,800 Deputy U.S. Marshals and over 1,400 administrative staff, do exemplary work every day, and you—our award winners—are the best of the best. This Department is proud of you. The President is proud of you. And this nation is proud of you.

“And so I want to thank you all for the exemplary service that we are honoring today. Know this: you have our thanks and we have your back.”

The AG departed after his remarks, but the DAG remained to present the Robert Forsyth Valor Award to this year’s four recipients.

The versatile Boeing P-8 Poseidon performs anti-submarine warfare, anti-surface warfare, shipping interdiction, and search-and-rescue functions. To support those missions the plane can carry torpedoes, depth charges, Harpoon anti-ship missiles, sonobuoys, search and rescue kits, and other equipment.

The Poseidon’s design is based on the Boeing 737-800ERX. The Poseidon first flew in 2009 and entered service with the U.S. Navy in 2013. It replaces the venerable Lockheed P-3 Orion. Multiple countries are deploying the Poseidon. Great Britain will take delivery in 2019. Members of the Royal Air Force are training with the aircraft and were conducting tours of this aircraft.

In 1918, Great Britain’s Royal Air Force (RAF) was founded, making it the first independent air force in the world. To celebrate the RAF’s 100th anniversary, the Smithsonian Institution’s National Air and Space Museum hosted The Great British Fly-In at its the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center in Chantilly, Virginia. The event included historic and modern aircraft and other vehicles, reenactors, lectures, and performances. Not all aircraft planned for the event were able to participate. Planes that did participate included a Lancaster, a B-25 Mitchell, and a Boeing P-8 Poseidon.

Arriva Midlands have replaced large swathes of their fleet with Optare Versas over the last few years, meaning they can be found on a variety of routes. One of the older ones in the fleet is YJ09MKX (2980), seen here turning in front of Shrewsbury station en route to the bus station, 11/05/2013.

The Versatile Henry Mancini and his Orchestra

Mancini, Henry

Liberty LST-7121

Life on the chessboard 3

This extremely versatile medium bomber was built by North American Aviation at their Kansas City, KS, plant. This aircraft is named in honor of Brig. Gen. William "Billy" Mitchell, who pioneered the concept of strategic aerial bombardment.

In April of 1942, Lt. Col. James H. "Jimmy" Doolittle, later Lt. General, led one of the most daring missions of the war flying the B-25. Only five months after the surprise attack on Pearl Harbor, Lt. Col. Doolittle led 16 B-25 "Mitchell" bombers off the deck of the U. S. S. Hornet. The B-25s bombed Tokyo, Yokohama, Kobe, and Nagoya. Lt. Col. Doolittle's "Tokyo Raiders" were successful in their mission.

The B-25 also served with distinction in North Africa, Italy, Europe, and the South Pacific.

The museum's B-25J, serial number 44-31032, was delivered to the Army Air Force in 1945 and put into storage until 1947. It was assigned to Vance AFB as a TB-25J and TB-25N for pilot training until retirement in 1958. The aircraft was then sold and registered as N3174AG. It participated in the 1970 Paramount Pictures release, "Catch - 22" and 44-31032 appeared in the film with the nose art of "Free, Fast and Ready".

The museum received the aircraft by truck in 1982. It was restored in 1998, wearing colors of the 42nd Bomb Group, 13th Air Force, and named "Problem Child". This aircraft is on loan from the USAF.
