This was used to illustrate my latest blog posting, which includes a link to a story about a Scottish man who wound up in the hospital after overindulging in these tasty little veggies.
...and other errors of omission.
You know there's a story in there somewhere, right?! I am so out of my element... and too tired to tell it right now!
Saturday Market, Eugene, OR
I'm having a dinner party tomorrow, vegetarian autumn menu. My awesome friend Marysol, who runs Hands of the Earth farm here in Austin (previously Oasis Gardens Farm -- name still in transition) got me everything here that I noted -- it's all either from her farm or other local, organic farms. I feel like I'm back in San Francisco -- this produce is incredible!
The stuff I didn't note is from Central Market and is not local, but I couldn't resist the New York Cortland apples for cider, the Washington Concorde pears to poach, the Italian chestnuts for roasting, the oranges for mulled wine, or the celery for a puree to serve with pasta.
The word pumpkin comes from the Greek pepon for a large melon. The English named it pumpion or pompion, a term which dates back to 1547.
Cultivated Pumpkins are believed to have originated in Central America and seeds from related plants found in Mexico date back to 5500 B.C. When the first settlers landed in the US, they found Native American Indians using pumpkin as a staple in their diets. It soon became a staple in the settlers' diets, too and the seeds were brought back to Europe, where pumpkins soon became popular.
