Iowa Interstate’s Chinese QJ class 2-10-2 No. 6988 smokes up a storm as it pulls out of Chillicothe, IL with the first of five excursions for the day.

I know, you thought the next shot I was going to post was going to be The Subway. Psyc!

Actually, my Subway shot is still rendering...I took a massive multi-row pano of it with a 100mm lens and the shots are all loaded up on a G5 with 16gb of RAM and that thing has been crunching those images for nearly 6 hours...I don't see any smoke yet so I think it's just very busy stitching. I hope.

Anway, in the meantime I thought I'd post one of my favorite shots from my time in Colorado -- Old Crystal Mill. This place is very remote, requiring a 4x4 type vehicle to access. What an amazing landscape, I thouroughly enjoyed my time at Crystal Mill. I arrived in the early morning on a one-way jeep drop-off (even though I knew afternoon would provide the best light) and spend the entire day scouting around it, eating lunch and just relaxing. It was awesome.

So the afternoon light did not disapoint and I shot Crystal Mill from every angle imaginable, settling on this classic vantage point. With the last of the blue sky almost out of sight I realized it was about time to leave. Since I'd only paid for a one-way jeep ride I had a 7 mile hike ahead of me to get back to the MoHo (aka Motorhome).

Suddenly, I turn to a familiar face, Mike Jones. Now I have to say, of all the times I've shot with Mike I never really felt "glad" to see him, though he is a kick in the pants, however this time I was GLAD.

Very glad.

My first words were "Mike, did you drive your truck here?!" Not "Oh hey Mike, good to see you..." or "Mike, how funny to run into you WAY out here...".

No. My first words were a plea of "can-I-get-a-ride-out-with-you so I don't have to hike 7 miles over rocky terrain..." camouflaged with "If you've got room in your truck it would be fun to catchup..."

He didn't buy it and my look of desperation likely was enough...he said "sure".

I did give him $20 and a big thanks at the other end before we headed off in different directions.

Thanks again Mikey!

As we moved up and left we placed ourselves at increasing risk. With each hit of the ice axe I watched the snow slide down beside me. If the snow headed toward the saddle then I was pretty sure we would do the same if we had fallen. But at one point, as I watched the snow break off and slide past, I saw it skate down the slope before disappearing over the edge to the abyss.

It was at this point, not far from where I am in this shot that I placed our first piece of protection. I'll admit it wasn't the best placed bit of gear. The snow was soft underneath and the change in rope direction didn't help things as it naturally pulled in the wrong direction, but some protection is better than none at all...right?

It took us much longer than anticipated to get here and there was still some distance to go. Each movement was hard fought and I found myself grunting like a tennis player as I plunged the axe into the snow. Slow as it was though we were still making ground.

UP GP60 1038 destroys another plow line as it passes through Rollo, IL. This was probably the most intense of the plow lines it hit on its run. Probably the biggest I've caught on camera so far.

Somehow I don't get the impression that this horse wants the cowboy to ride him.

A shot from the beginning of the safari in Namibia to remind us all of the diversity of the country. Walvis Bay by the Atlantic Ocean is teeming with wild flamingos. So many formations of them and then one or two of them makes a dramatic move.

A reminder that all of my images are copyrighted and are not for your use in any way unless you contact me.

I want to thank everyone who has viewed this and other pictures! A big THANK YOU for looking at what I saw along the way while on safari. I'll return the favor as soon as I can but may be a little slower than usual.

Climbing up the Navajo Trail after a long morning down in the canyon. Got a little cloudy as we ascended these switchbacks, to our relief, otherwise the high sun would have turned this bit of trail into a big dutch oven with the high red walls to either side.
