UP 3035 leads a westbound manifest train around the curve near MP 59 on the UP Kansas Sub this evening. Another EMD Tier IV leading a train in the humid evening air with the smoke of the wildfires in the west giving the sunset a different glow.
A westbound UP stack train charges up out of the Brazos River valley into it's namesake town in March 1999.

Thanks to a timely heads up from Cade I was able to sneak over to Linwood and nab this absolutely mint fresh GEAC4400CW rebuild at Linwood just after sunrise. They sure don't stay this clean for long. Great morning that was almost ruined due to clouds.
Class 20's D8096 & D8107 are seen working hard again, this time at Shap Wells working 1Z33 Preston - Carlisle on the WCML.

A tier 4 EMD is on point of this grain train heading east through Buffalo. I've seen these a couple times in the past, trailing/not moving, but this is my first time getting one on point of a train.
Two ratty looking geeps drag UP 4141 and the casket car up from the BNSF Gibson Yard. On it's way back from being displayed, the UP has to pass though Gibson Yard and use the mainline to get back to home track.
Although George was actually trailing, the crew left the lights on making this shot actually look decent.
Here's another IR-Infrared image. Never forget to look up when out exploring.
Thanks for stopping by

When you get into photography you have to start somewhere and for me it was Christmas 2008 when I received my first DSLR, a Canon Rebel XSi. I had used one of my Dad's Olympus film cameras here and there prior but it wasn't until I got the Rebel that my interest in photography took off.
As I'm sure many of you out there can relate, looking back at early photos can make you cringe! I had no concept of light, sun angles, or composition back then and I really seemed into taking roster shots of the power and not including much, if any, of the train.
During the summer of 2009 Union Pacific's power desk was running duos, trios, and even a quartet of their heritage locomotives on their Chicago to Los Angeles 'K' train service. I had the good fortune of catching a few of those colorful trains in SoCal that summer, unfortunately, I have few presentable photos to show for those early efforts. No matter, the memories of those trips are priceless. I was still in high school in 2009 and during my summer break while my dad was at work my grandpa took me on many railfan adventures, including this one...
The sun has just climbed above the mountains that ring Cajon Pass and illuminates the UP 1983 (WP) and 1996 (SP) as they bring the KLAG1 up the old 'north track' alignment at Pine Lodge. UP 1995 (C&NW) was on the rear as a DPU.
I recently came across this photo and while it is nothing special photogenically...it sure brings back good memories. What I would give to be trackside with Gramps again!
Thanks for looking back with me.

Tier 4 C45AH's aren't common on the UP except on the west coast where they are generally stuck, so when I saw a couple en route I figured I better get em.
I was planning on shooting this guy at Ames, NE passing the old tin-sheathed wooden elevator, but alas, upon arrival all that remains is some broken up concrete from the foundation. Darn it. I had time to head over to Schuyler to shoot it at some of the more formidable 'vaders in that town. The lesson, as always, shoot that stuff while you can.
On May 4th, 2019 the Overland Route witnessed the return of a Big Boy, under steam, for the first time in six decades, as UP 4014 double headed to Ogden, Utah with UP 844. Here the Alco duo thread the cut at Pine Ridge, east of Rock River, en route to the 150th anniversary celebration of the Transcontinental Railroad's completion.

November 2019, this might have been the last portrait shoot I did.

Uncle Pete lends several helping hands as NS train #371 grinds up and over Braswell Mountain in northwest Georgia.
UP 7947 is captured in evening light running westbound on the normally eastbound main 2, making it's way around the horseshoe curve at Irene.

One of two uploads for a monthly challenge I'm doing with a group of Flickr friends. This month's theme is "looking up".
This is the RMIT Design Hub; a much photographed building. I've rarely been past it when there hasn't been someone pointing a camera skywards up the facade.
UP 1995 West passing the iconic flag barn with a manifest train in tow. This one will be well covered by the local crowd.
Weaving along the north bank of the Weber River, just east of Devil's Slide, an eastbound Union Pacific stack train swims 'up stream' with the Western Pacific heritage locomotive on the point.

UP was kind enough to put the clean one on the point of this mostly domestic intermodal train as it passes Krieder Road on the UP Kansas Sub. It was all of 0 degrees when the bird went in the air, but it was much warmer in my pickup truck!
In the Teutoburg Forest, there was a hunting station where, luckily, the only hunter present was the one hunting with a camera. I find ladders and stairs to be a rather fascinating subject, one that I haven't given much consideration to before.
Image taken with the Helios 40-2 lens.
The previous shot was but a nice test shot for the real prize on this hundred degree afternoon....
After a roundabout two week tour of the eastern portion of the Union Pacific, an engineering special is less than 10 miles from home base at Heritage Park in Council Bluffs.
New Tier 4 EMD SD70AH #3032 likely came back with around 6000 miles of light-duty break-in mileage.
