This image is for a DeepSkyStacker tutorial on my blog, Flintstone Stargazing: flintstonestargazing.com/2009/06/26/my-quick-deepskystack...
The first part of the tutorial is setting up the four layers.
1a. Create a new document with a black background.
1b. Add 3 new transparent layers.
1c. On second "New Layer" make a square selection, smaller than the background and fill the selection with a medium gray color.
1d. On third "New Layer#1" paste a white cutout shape, smaller than the 2nd gray layer. To make a cutout shape, go to a new document with white background. Add alpha channel. Paste a shape or object onto the white background. In layers dialog, right click this layer and "Alpha to selection".
1e. Click on the top forth layer "New Layer#2" and fill the selection with a brown color.
1f. In image click on Selection and choose None.
Your image and layers should look like the picture.

While waiting for my tut. #4 pics I got to looking at tutorial #5 and ended up starting out a little differently...as i was reading that she chose teal paint all I could think about were these dark green and light aqua 2x6 leftover pieces of cardstock that I had thrown into my PMS kit. Glued and repunched than matched up page 4 to page five and glued strips of cardstock to match the top of page five, then glued down the two backs and put them under phonebooks and walked away for awhile. After doing the teal paint free hand I was looking at it and decided to "doodle" over the top of my free hand with my see-thru ruler and green ink, following some less than straight lines and some that actually were straight. I added robin's egg blue after the teal dried before moving on. {if you want to, go visit my photostream under the R.B. art journal set to SEE what I'm talking about} Forgot to write the date before pic..I put it on the robin's egg blue by the teapot.
