A male California quail (Callipepla californica) perched on a lichen and moss covered tree branch on such a wintry day in February. Dreaming of warmer climes perhaps? Saanich, Vancouver Island, BC
While walking down the creek bank I kept hearing a kingfisher's rattle but could never spot it. When I came back up the creek, I finally saw him at the top of a tree.

"Female Cardinal Perch" by Patti Deters. A female Northern Cardinal (Cardinalis cardinalis) with crest up and orange beak, perches on an arborvitae tree branch as she keeps an eye on the photographer. This one is from Minnesota, and these passerines don't migrate to warmer climates. They are commonly seen around bird feeders and have more than 24 different songs. Their call is a distinctive high-pitched “chip!” This particular image is for sale at patti-deters.pixels.com/featured/female-cardinal-perch-pa... (printed and shipped WITHOUT watermark) through Fine Art America (FAA) which offers a 30-day money-back guarantee. If you like this outdoor photograph, I invite you to please share or see my main image gallery (avian, wildlife, and more) at patti-deters.pixels.com.

"Sitting Saw-whet Owl" by Patti Deters. This Northern Saw-whet Owl (aegolius acadicus) was seen sitting in a pine tree branches in the middle of the day, though with the gently falling snow it seemed closer to dusk. These little brown streaked raptors are not generally seen during the day, much less perching out in the open. They are 'crepuscular' birds, which describes their preference for being active during periods of low light. The dreary winter weather may have given the nudge for this small owl to be awake and alert during the daytime. They prefer to roost in dense conifers during the day and hunt at night. The little predator didn't stay perched there for very long - perhaps it was too cold or there wasn't any food activity. Fluffy with big eyes, these birds are one of the cutest and smallest species of owls. Other species that are sometimes confused with the Saw-whet are the boreal owl (saw-whets are smaller and have less spots) and the Eastern screech owl which has ear tufts and more streaks in their feathers. If you like this outdoor nature photograph, please see (fauna, animals, wildlife, more) at patti-deters.pixels.com/featured/sleepy-saw-whet-owl-patt....

Another one of the winter sparrows I look for each year. This one was at the lake but I usually get a few in my yard too.

She sits and guards the hummingbird feeder. Every time another female tries to come to the sugar water, this one dive bombs the intruder and drives her away. For some reason she allows males to feed.

Flying balls of fluff. These tiny woodland dwellers have a strong claim to be considered the UK’s cutest bird The species is at home in woodland, but can also be found in farmland, parks and gardens, provided there is plenty of tree cover
I love this capture of this little gem,, with all the different textures of green lichen and moss so beautiful ... they never stop moving!!
#36 Cabin Road
As if it wasn't bad enough that the house was washing away now a tree fell on it. This cabin is now claimed by the ocean.
There were 40 privately owned cabins on Hunting Island at one point. Only two remain one abandoned one still intact. One of the two is in the water ready to fall in at some point. Named the Indomitable Lady for 7 years people have flocked to the cabin in the water to see if it still stands.
There is one cabin owned by the park that can be rented.
This unique beach is famous for the salt-washed skeletons of live oak and cedar trees that once grew near the shore.
One fun thing about winter is finding all the sparrow species that come here during this season. They often lead you on a merry chase but this time one posed for me in the open sunlight.
Lincoln's Sparrow (Melospiza lincolnii)
Carolina Snailseed Vine (Cocculus carolinus)

While walking the creek bank I spotted two eastern kingbird fledglings. They were in constant motion. Fluttering their wings, yelling for food and going from branch to branch. A parent was flying in & out delivering food drops. Too fast for me to get a shot of the adult but I did get a quick shot of one baby right after a very large food drop.

This was one of the most peaceful moments I've experienced in years. Total stillness, no sounds, just the sun, the mist and me. And of course the water soaked treebranch that was stuck in the middle of those rocks. I named it the morning wood ;)

Little Red Robin in my garden today.
I went out to refill our Bird feeder and this Robin came very close to me. I went back into the house for my camera and fortunately it was still around when I returned. I managed this shot with my 17-55mm lens on the camera. No time for changing the lens. I cropped in Lightroom.
