I say hopeful because I was really excited to see the return of the Tree Swallows to our yard. We have had them nesting for 5 years until last year when magpies tried to nest in our tree. We were removing sticks for nearly 2 months so they wouldn't nest here hoping that the swallows would return. Eventually they gave up but probably scared the swallows away.
This year has been completely different in the swallow's behavior. They flew around, came to the box with a few dried grasses and a single feather but did not stay inside very long. But what is most confusing is that we saw them mate but, previously, have never seen them mate until the nest was done. It seemed like this swallow just didn't know what to do! It is getting late now so I am not sure if we will be successful this year and will just have to wait and see. Taken in my back yard in Calgary, Alberta. Canon R5
Thank you for your visit and comments. They are very much appreciated.
I will be off Flickr for a few days.
An update on the swallows that we were hoping would nest in our yard again. After being away for a few days, there was no more activity in the box that we have in our yard so it looks like this year will be unsuccessful. Their behavior seemed very different right from the beginning, so it looks like we will hope for next year.
I have a pair of these birds visiting my backyard suet feeder for the past week or more.

Smile on Saturday... Frosty Flora
I spotted this White squirrel drinking from a small spring and I followed it as it fled from me up a steep hill. Then it scurried up near the top of this tree and sat there perched and watching me like a hawk! In order to get a photo, I had to be careful of my footing and I stepped into some mud close by the natural spring. It was the only vantage point with not too many other trees and brush in my way.

Felix spends most of his time during his visits hanging out in the densely covered areas of the yard. There are plenty of options along the fence and beneath the oak trees. He is quick so it's not always easy to get a good look at him as he travels from area to area. But you can tell he is around when he starts making his cat in distress call. I believe there are two catbirds hanging out by the sound of it, but I have yet to see more than one at a time.
Felix enjoys a large variety of seeds and berries from the yard and he will visit the feeding stations in order to grab a mealworm on occasion. In this image he thinks he is hiding among the Crepe Myrtle branches. Crepe Myrtles are deciduous so technically they don't provide the best cover during the winter season. However, they do have seeds which many of the birds, including Felix seem to enjoy. Apparently, the seeds like the mealworms are worth the risk of leaving the densely covered areas.
Wishing you a wonderful Wednesday and happy snapping.

She was on a fallen tree branch just inches off the ground so I had to lay in snow to get this one, thankfully it was just snow this time, last time I got up from shooting and discovered I had accidently lay down on top of either a coyote or dog turd of some sort! ewww! 😆
We have not seen this much snow since the pandemic began. It came yesterday. Not long after this photo was taken, one of big tree branches collapsed. Snow was pretty, but can also be destructive. It caused us out of power for 20 hours in a fridge temperature.

A male Grey Squirrel with a one tract mind, stayed away for a short time to fool the female White Squirrel. He slowly was making his way back to her hiding spot and waiting for her to be confident to leave. Then he would pounce on her to mate with her. At least that was his plan!
