Man, it would really suck to get stuck with the grave by the
trash pile. Meh, I don't really like the picture itself, but
oh well. I fiddled with it way too much when I should have
just remembered my polarizing filter. My GIMP privileges
need to be taken away.
this graveyard would have been the most peaceful place I've
been in Japan, if you took away the trash pile, the business
suits using it as a shortcut to work, and the stupid American
tourist with a camera (that's me!). So where do I find this
secluded bastion of rest and harmony, expansive enough that I
needed my compass to get out? Um, in Tokyo, obviously.
I have begun to form what will be known as the McKim
Theory of Japan and Ironic Relativity. I'll be famous.
Basically, everything in Japan is in the one place where you
would least expect it. Most of the shrines are surrounded by
kind of dumpy, falling apart houses. Cell phones are in
convenience stores. Beer vending machines are a block away
from a children's park. The most peaceful places are in the
most hectic city. And I'm not even going to go into driving.
Let's just say that I definitely don't want to be behind the
wheel until cars and bikes stop popping up in unexpected
places. Not a pleasant surprise.
Now I just need to figure out the least likely place for
there to be a leprechaun handing out 10,000 yen notes, and
I'll be set for life. I would never make up a theory
that didn't have a practical application. Tune in next week
for the McKim Theory of-- ... oh, ahem. I think I may
have said too much.

In Democratische Republiek Congo ondersteunt Cordaid klinieken door middel van een unieke financieringsmethode.
Via Results-Based Financing (RBF) krijgen medische instellingen pas uitbetaald als ze bepaalde resultaten behalen, zoals meer zwangerschapscontroles en veilige bevallingen.
Dit systeem motiveert het personeel van de klinieken om resultaten snel te verbeteren. Hierdoor is de kwaliteit van de gezondheidszorg in de gebieden waar Cordaid werkt, met grote sprongen vooruit gegaan.
In de oostelijke provincies Noord- en Zuid-Kivu financiert Cordaid lokale klinieken.
De klinieken werken samen met lokale gezondheidsmedewerkers van de overheid. Die gaan van dorp tot dorp om ziektegevallen op te sporen en voorlichting te geven.
Door de RBF-methode en de goede samenwerking met de lokale bevolking, heeft Cordaid kunnen bijdragen aan het terugdringen van cijfers van moeder- en kindsterfte in DR Congo.

En este chiquito espacio, la celula madre, se he instalado una artista trashnologista que se materializo en Buenos Aires Trash City en 2004. Haciendo chic lo que los demas descartan, trashformando su medio ambiente, ella esta dando vida a cosas rotas y tiradas tratando de crear de estos escombros algo deseable. Ella cree que esto es un proceso que augmenta la consciencia del cambio necesario para un futuro digno para nuestros hijos.
“Se habla mucho del consumo, se habla mucho. Se hace poco. Nadie quiere menos, y todos mas. Si se puede generar un cambio en Buenos Aires, una de las metropolis mas feroz de esta tierra, se puede hacer la trashformacion necesario para preservar nuestro habitat, se puede escapar esta vision apocalyptica y vivir una vida feliz con pocos recursos. Mis trasheaciones no buscan a mostrarnos nuestra inadecuacia de hacer un cambio, solo muestran esta realidad alternativa, una realidad feliz en cual convivimos con escombros como objetos de deseo, porque se han trashformado en algo deseable gracias a nuestra fantasia, nuestro deseo de vivir en otra manera. Nos enamigariamos con lo que descartan los demas. En mil anios, los archeologos van a encontrar cepillos de inodores y vasos de plastico y van a tratar de explicar nuestra sociedad a base de estos artefactos. I don't know why I like to take pictures of trash, but I do. I like the various textures in this photo, and I like how the black and white treatment brings out those textures.
Shouldn't it be easier to take a bottle along when you leave? It's lighter than at a time you took it to the place.
The 5th Annual Sunol Glen Trashion Show is an event culminating a variety of week-long environmental activities hosted during Earth Week, April 28-May 2. The goal of this extremely popular event is to get students at this Bay Area K-8th Grade school thinking differently about waste in order to create positive behavior change.
