On May 10, 1980, Dad shot O&W SD40-2s 9956 (to BCOL 749, to ICE 6450), 9957 (to BCOL 750), 9953 (to BCOL 746), and 9955 (to BCOL 748) running through the turntable on their way to the refueling track at Etowah, Tennessee.

The power, cars and caboose were all owned by Shamrock Coal Company and used to haul coal to power plants in South Carolina and south Georgia. The SD40-2s were built to L&N specs, and crewed by L&N or Clinchfield crews (later SBD crews). The power would eventually be sold to British Columbia Railroad.

From the back of the card:

"Red automatic signal #2553 - the "dated" old wig-wag crossing warning - the still "orange, red and black" painted engine - and the train's number, "72" - paint the perfect picture here of yesterday's peerless railroading. The first three digits on the signal's number-plate are 253, the mile long Southern Pacific's Coast Line in which the picture was taken. So - just about a mile below San Luis Obispo, California, is the spot. That swinging crossing "alerter" bespeaks of many years ago. The "Daylight" colored, twin-eyed Northern Type locomotie reminds us of the flashy "Fifties, when people rode the trains. And when the Coast Mail, the well-known "headend" rattler with a rear-end coach, was still No. 72 - it was at least till 1954. In 1955 she became no. 90, headed south (eastbound).

This locomotive, this big 4457, flaunts silver-gray plummages as if she were in charge of the "Daylight". Yet the lowly mail-and-express train trails her haughty tender in its smoky wake. Perhaps her steamy sinews are exultant as she dreams of runs before her time - when "72" adorned more ancient engines at the helm of that first old-world, delightful - "Daylight Limited"...

NREX SD40-2 9402 was built as Cotton Belt SD45T-2 9402. It was later folded into the Southern Pacific roster as SP 9402. After SP was absorbed by UP, the unit was sold off and NREX rebuilt it as an SD40-2 with an old Norfolk Southern long hood, giving this unique unit the longest back porch of any 40-2 out there. I found it pulling yard duty in the Canadian Pacific yard in Harvey, North Dakota on November 19, 2007.

This tiny, narrow gauge 0-4-0CA ran on compressed air. The "boiler" is actually the tank for holding the compressed air. It was used to move ore cars around inside and outside of one of the Anaconda Copper Mining Company's mines. The engine was built by H.K. Porter sometime in the very early 1900s

It was photographed at the World Museum of Mining in Butte, Montana on 10 April 2014.

The Glendale suburb of Cincinnati, Ohio. I stopped to shoot a parked Southbound when I heard this beast coming North on the other track. Perhaps it is a fear of trains from my childhood (steam engines back then), but I have to admit I get nervous when I'm standing near the tracks as these bad boys come rumbling by. I was not in danger of getting run over, but was still pretty close to this one when I took this wide angle shot.

CSX 7632 is a GE C40-8 manufactured in 8/90. I didn't get the number of the second engine as I was stepping back.

I've noticed recent TV ads for CSX, Norfolk Southern, Union Pacific and Santa Fe and Burlington Northern. Since I've heard that they are so busy that they are having difficulty keeping up, I don't understand why they are suddenly advertising so much. Who is their audience? As a train freak, I like to see the ads, but I'm certainly in no need of their services.
