Photo shot by my Dad, Jay Thomson, at Jackson, TN in May 1979
On May 30, 1979 Dad shot recently retired Illinois Central C636 1100 at Jackson, TN. Even though she's only been retired a few months, she's already been canabalized for parts.

This old Fairbanks-Morse H10-44 was almost 51 years old when Dad photographed it in Centerville, TN in 1979. Painted red, white & blue, it is lettered for South Central Tennessee Railroad. The unit was formerly Apache Railroad #200. It was wrecked November 13, 1979, very close to its 51st birthday.

On April 23, 2014, Dad shot BNSF C41-8W 945 (ex-ATSF 945) looking like an unpatched ATSF unit, but the sun and weather has peeled away the white stenciled "BNSF" from beneath the road number the same way it's tarnished the once-proud warbonnet paint.

Lancaster and Chester Train 14 is westbound through Fort Lawn, South Carolina in 2016 heading to Richburg to meet the second L&C road train of the day.
Lancaster and Chester Railroad #3821 was built in 1978 as Conrail GP38-2 #8235. In the Conrail takeover, it became Nrfolk Southern #5368. NS sold it to Hems Leasing where it became HLCX #3821. Helms leased it to the L&C who then bought the locomotive.

On December 30, 1984 Dad found SBD GP30 1341 (ex-SCL 1341, nee-SAL 531) sitting at the roundhouse in Etowah, Tennessee.
If you look closely at the long hood, you can see the "Seaboard" from it's SAL days showing through, beneath overlapping "Seaboard Coast Line" stenciling from two different SCL paint jobs.

Photo shot by my Dad, Jay Thomson, at Elza, TN in July 1980
On July 15, 1980, Dad shot O&W SD40-2s 9951 (to BCOL 744, to DME 6200), 9954 (to BCOL 747), 9952 (to BCOL 745, to DME 6201) and 9950 (to BCOL 743, to ASDX 743) with a southbound OWTX train at Elza, Tennessee.
O&W power, cars and caboose were all owned by Shamrock Coal Company and used to haul coal to power plants in South Carolina and south Georgia. The SD40-2s were built to L&N specs, and crewed by L&N or Clinchfield crews (later SBD crews). The power would eventually be sold to British Columbia Railroad.

On Monday June 21, 2010 a northbound BNSF unit coal train derailed just north of Power, Montana on the Great Falls subdivision. The derailment is believed to have been caused by water-logged soil that shifted beneath the roadbed, causing the roadbed to give way beneath the DPUs - BNSF SD70MAC 9790 and SD70ACe 9244. Only the the DPUs left the tracks, with 9790 remaining mostly upright. 9244 was completely on its side.
On June 24, 2010, I photographed BNSF SD70ACe 9244 undergoing repairs on site at Power, Montana. 9244 was, by far, the most heavily damaged of the two units that derailed, but will clearly be serviceable again soon.

Photo shot by my Dad, Jay Thomson, at Oakdale, TN in Nov. 1976
On November 5, 1976, Dad shot SOU FP7 6142 (ex-CNOTP 6142) at Oakdale, Tennessee.
Hamilton, Ohio. These two Union Pacific locomotives were bringing up the rear of a five unit CSX train that was headed North. I guess CSX leases some UP engines from time to time as I wouldn't expect to see them this far East or connected to three CSX units as these two were. However, I was very happy to catch them as I love the colors and I get tired of looking at CSX and NS engines which make up the bulk of what is seen around here.

Photo shot by my Dad, Jay Thomson, near Arco Junction, TN in June 1976
In June and July of 1976 Dad's B&B crew was working at Morley, TN and on three occasions Dad got to ride along with the crew of the Clairfield Local in the afternoon after his work crew had finished for the day.
The Clairfield Local worked the Trevilion Branch, which was a joint L&N/Southern line from Morley, TN to Fonde, KY. L&N locals originated out of Lafollette or Morley while Southern locals originated out of Jellico, TN.
On June 8, 1976 Dad was riding along in the cab of L&N C420 1322 (ex-Monon 505) and took this shot as the units were switching the coal tipple at Anthras, TN.
