Norfolk Southern GP59 4607 is on the point of a local train in Rock Hill, South Carolina back in 2003. It is a GP59 built as EMDX GP59 9 in 1985 as a demonstrator unit. It was one of a few units with the unusual cab roof. It was then sold to Norfolk Southern Railway as their 4607. Since this photograph was made, NS has rebuilt it to GP59E 4650.

I don't recall the film.
During 2011, I took a lot of images with this camera, but it was set aside when I started getting into medium format and shooting far less 35mm. I recalled how much fun I had with the UWS, and picked up another one not long ago. Meanwhile, posting these images from '11 is a nice and somewhat bittersweet journey down my memory lane.

"...The road-switcher locomotive arrived [on the Boston & Maine] in 1954, when 10 ALCO B-B units replaced antique 4-4-0's and 4-4-2's in commutation service between Boston and the surrounding suburban area. Three years later, the B&M ordered 50 GM-EMD GP9-model road-switchers to completely eliminate steam power of all kinds on its system, even though many of the big 4-8-2's were far from worn out. The GP-model unit was quite useful on the B&M, as a single one could replace a 2-8-0 in branch-line service, and for main-line duty they could be coupled together and operated in multiple. These locomotives were numbered 1700-1749. The GP9-model had a 1750-hp engine, and it could exert a tractive effort of 62,000 lbs. Its 250,000-lb weight was supported by two 2-motor Blomberg-design trucks.

On December 2, 1979, Dad shot O&W SD40-2 9952 (to BCOL 745, to DME 6201) at Morley, Tennessee.
O&W power, cars and caboose were all owned by Shamrock Coal Company and used to haul coal to power plants in South Carolina and south Georgia. The SD40-2s were built to L&N specs, and crewed by L&N or Clinchfield crews (later SBD crews). The power would eventually be sold to British Columbia Railroad.
