The Glendale suburb of Cincinnati, Ohio. I stopped to shoot a parked Southbound when I heard this beast coming North on the other track. Perhaps it is a fear of trains from my childhood (steam engines back then), but I have to admit I get nervous when I'm standing near the tracks as these bad boys come rumbling by. I was not in danger of getting run over, but was still pretty close to this one when I took this wide angle shot.

CSX 7632 is a GE C40-8 manufactured in 8/90. I didn't get the number of the second engine as I was stepping back.

I've noticed recent TV ads for CSX, Norfolk Southern, Union Pacific and Santa Fe and Burlington Northern. Since I've heard that they are so busy that they are having difficulty keeping up, I don't understand why they are suddenly advertising so much. Who is their audience? As a train freak, I like to see the ads, but I'm certainly in no need of their services.

What a rare and classic beauty! Southern SW1 1007 is now owned by Knoxville & Holston River (a Gulf & Ohio company) (and is technically KXHR 1007). It was built in April 1947 as Atlantic & East Carolina #9 (builder #4582). When the A&EC was absorbed by the Southern Railway in 1958, she was repainted in Southern colors and renumbered as 404. Sometime after 1972 but before 1976, Southern renumbered her as #1007. In recent years, G&O restored 1007 to her glorious Southern black, white & gold paint scheme and on December 2, 2008, my Dad and I found her sitting at the G&O offices in Knoxville, TN.

This was taken on the day Dad and I went railfanning together for the first time in a decade.

This old BN GP9 is being used for parts by Central Montana Rail to keep their other Geeps running. It's riding on shop trucks, the front coupler is missing and the long hood is gone. The numbers are gone from the number board and the builder's plate was missing, but thanks to JDAWG who identified it as #1719. All roster info I try to find doesn't include this unit. All other Geeps CM acquired from BN were repainted in CM's black and blue scheme.

This unit is nice and shiny, having been recently shopped and painted. The last time I saw this unit was about 16 months ago when she was still in her old number and Southern Pacific paint (see that shot here).

Sometime in December of 1979, Dad shot O&W SD40-2 9950 (to BCOL 743, to ASDX 743) at Corbin, Kentucky.

O&W power, cars and caboose were all owned by Shamrock Coal Company and used to haul coal to power plants in South Carolina and south Georgia. The SD40-2s were built to L&N specs, and crewed by L&N or Clinchfield crews (later SBD crews). The power would eventually be sold to British Columbia Railroad.

Along National Road US Route 40 in Teutopolis, Illinois. CN 2276 is a GE ES44DC built in 10/2007. After three beautiful days on Route 66, we had to head home in a heavy rain. Once the rain let up, we stopped to shoot an Eastbound UP train that was stopped. Before we got going again, here comes this fast moving Westbound CN. I was stoked to finally capture a CN from the front as they are rarely seen around Cincinnati. Interesting that CN puts their web site URL on the side of their engine.

"If for no other reason, Duluth, Missabe & Iron Range motive power was noted for its spick-and-span appearance, a characteristic more obvious now, perhaps, becasue of the bright color scheme applied to tis Diesel locomotives. The three units in this picture, taken at Hoyt Lakes in the heart of the iron mining district served by the Duluth, Missabe & Iron Range, are 1750 engine-horsepower C-C GM-EMD SD9-models, numbered 170, 153 and 165...

SW Ohio just West of Cincinnati near the Indiana/Ohio border.

Yesterday, we attempted to gain (legal) access to a small railroad yard which I believe is operated by the Genesee and Wyoming Inc group which owns several small regional railroads. The guys in the yard office denied us access, but I was able to get this rather extreme telephoto shot of the stationary locomotive without intruding. At the time, all I realized is that I had a shot of a colorful locomotive. It turns out that it is a RailPower RP20BD. I don't think I have ever seen one before. Apparently it is a remanufactured locomotive with green "genset" technology. It has three computer controlled engine-generator sets that operate separately so they only use the power that they need at the time.

I certainly understand and respect the safety concerns of the owners of these yards, but I sure wish there was a way to accommodate train freaks in a controlled and safe manner. Hopefully, I'll be able to find more of these colorful units working around the area.
