Towab Trail

Lake Superior Provincial Park

Ontario

Dominated by 300 metre canyon walls, the Towab trail winds through the Agawa River Valley. Sugar maple, yellow birch and white pine are predominant in the valley which supports the most complete representation of the Great Lakes - St. Lawrence forest in the park. Small stands of oak, elm and ash are also scattered through the valley.

The very demanding 12 km linear trail (6 to 8 hours one way) meanders along the river banks, ending at the 25 metre high Agawa Falls.

The footpath has very steep grades, wet, slippery areas and uneven terrain. Please use caution near water, at lookouts and cliffs, and on trail structures.

The Trail is named for Towabanasay, an Ojibwe guide, who held hunting rights in the Agawa River area in the early nineteenth century.

The Lowline Trail is a great little trail in the Crazy Mountains that is great for hiking in early summer when there's too much snow to get over the high passes.

I rode my bike along part of the Banks Vernonia Trail on Halloween day. It's a great fall bike ride because of all the brilliant yellow bigleaf maples along the route.

By the way, I didn't arrange any of these leaves. I never do that in my photos. Mother Nature did all the leaf-placing for this shot.

Beaver Meadow Falls in New York's Adirondacks.

If you take the the East Side trail from Ausable Lake you cross a small wooden bridge to get to Beaver Falls. But there has been some erosion and downed trees that have obliterated the trail to the falls. So you need to bushwhack about 100 yards to the falls. Not that bad since you can hear them and catch glimpses through the trees. You burst out of the forest and are greeted with this view. Not a bad reward for your efforts.

The Trail Turn trundles down the Plummer Line in eastern Polk County on the final leg to the Strata Corporation five miles away. Two GP20C-ECOs and 22 cars are making the trip crossing the fertile plain carved out by Glacial Lake Agassiz. I heard train activity in Thief River Falls and saw the Trail Turn depart. A chase to collect Plummer Line scenes was in order. First time I have been able to gather photos east of Plummer in three years. I cut off the chase here but gestured my thanks to the crew for being able to leapfrog them for 15 miles and an hour and half of their day.

I will be posting more photos of my Old Rag hike as time permits for processing the RAWs - I really liked this one so it is the first to be posted. This was taken on the return hike down the backside of Old Rag.

BTW, this post has 1 other image in the 1st comment box below, but due to the new Flickr layout, not all comments are displayed after the first few comments are posted....now they make you click on a link to 'View XX more comments', over and over. I don't know about the rest of you, but other than the photostream design, I think this new layout sucks! And it is soooooo sloooooooow!
