Alternatively called nine-spotted moth, it can fly only during the day.

Green Anole (Anolis carolinensis) - The Space Coast, Merritt Island, Florida
I found this guy "takin' off the gloves" on my second story deck, and immediately ran for the camera to document the event. As you can see this is the native Green species, and I’d found that I tend to find more of them on the second story deck than on the patio. I suspect that this may be because the "Greens" tend to be better concealed in the green tree canopies whereas the invasive Brown Anoles (Anolis Sagrei) are better camouflaged on the ground. I could be wrong, but that's my observation.
Just sayin'
FYI - After it pulled the skin off its foot, it ate it.
And what better thing to eat when you need the right nutrients to grow new skin!

Eastern Garter Snake (Thamnophis sirtalis sirtalis) sitting under the inflorescence of an Eastern Willow-herb (Epilobium coloratum) - Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens, 132 Botanical Gardens Dr, Boothbay, Maine
One of the best things I liked about this guy was that it was mostly hidden. Reason being that snakes are difficult subjects because of their length. Some folks like to pick them up, relocate them, and poke at them until they assume a more compact position that allows capturing their whole body while being able to get good detail. But I have a more of a hands-off policy, so I'm always happy to find guys like this that are cooperating in other ways. 'Cause after all, once you've seen the first couple of inches you've pretty much seen it all. So I'll leave it up to your imagination to figure out that this guy comes to a point at it's tail-end.

That's 2016 nearly done. According to Flickr's "interestingness" algorithm these are my top 36 pics. They are certainly not in the order I would put them. That "lorries turning" sign? And my top macro being taken on an iPhone? Hmphh
But it's you the viewer that counts, so thanks for looking in over the course of the year.

Eastern Painted Turtle (Chrysemys picta picta) - WOC, The Great Swamp National Wildlife Refuge, Basking Ridge, New Jersey
I was looking for a Black-shouldered Spinyleg capture in my 2009 archive when I stumbled onto this guy.
Funny how you can get excited about a couple of captures you made on any given day, and not even give dozens of other good captures any consideration (and looking at the settings, I worked pretty hard to make this capture)!
Sometimes you just have to trust the instinct that inspired you to stop and make those captures, and force yourself to look though them all (even if it takes years to do it).
In the mean time, so long as I can get out there and haul my gear through the muck and mire, these guys can wait.
Male Magnificent Frigatebird and chick - North Seymour Island, Galápagos Islands, Ecuador
View on Black to bring out the details in the blacks.
The chicks usually lay on the nest as if dead, but quickly spring back to life when a parent arrives. This shot also shows the feather development priority during the chick's first molt (wings first). It will keep it's orange face until after all the wing and body feathers have grown in.

Gotta love the eyes on these guys, and when it popped its head out of the box early enough for me to make this capture at 1/25th of a second, and F8 (ISO 400) I thanked my lucky stars, and went abstract for a good look at those lovely feathers around the eye.

Had a top macro photography day today. Loads of interesting things out there blowing about in the wind! Found my first damselfly of the year and a couple of these super cute jumping spiders. This one was fairly tiny but was a great poser! All the colours here are natural. The red is a brick wall in the background.
By this time next week I'll be in Costa Rica!

Easter Screech Owl (red morph) - Suburban New Jersey, 25 miles west of "The City" (NYC)
The owl came out early today at about 3:00 PM so I ran the camera up the tree and set up to make some captures. But to my surprise the images I captured at ISO 100, F4 and 1/50 sec weren't as good as this 1 second ISO 400 exposure at F 14 that I made later in the day. It was however windy earlier in the day and perhaps 1/50 wasn't fast enough to keep the feathers from motion blurring, not to mention that the DOF at F4 was very short and only a small part of the face was in focus. The wind had calmed down by the time of this capture, and the only problem/distraction was the Titmouse feather in its mustache from its last meal.

Green Anole (Anolis carolinensis) - Merritt Island, Florida
I found these guys hiding in the bushes in the back yard, and they reminded me of a bush we used to have next to our mail box back in Jersey. The Jersey bush had a large, dense canopy and was surprisingly spacious and branch free under the canopy. Then one day when I was cleaning up beer cans in the street near the mail box I noticed there was a "love nest" hidden inside the bush. Who'd think that kids would be partying in the bush next to your mailbox?! I thought about putting a motion detector from an old flood light kit in the bush with a wire to the house, and then call in law enforcement when the sensor lit a light in my foyer. But then I figured that likely would have been a losing battle and decided to cut down the bush, thereby forcing the local miscreants to find another place to whoop it up.
Hopefully they learned there was a price to be paid for littering!

Burrowing Owl - Brian Piccolo Park, Hollywood, Florida
I had just dropped my brother off at the Port of Maimi for a cruise with his old schoolmates, and decided to bring my camera gear along so I could drop in on these Hollywood types on my way back to the Space Coast.
There was a junior soccer tournament the day I visited the park, so I looked for these guys away from the noise and traffic around the games. I was just about to give up on finding any out−n−about when I spotted a pair next to the baseball fields hunkered down in their hole. And to my amazement, rather than disappearing completely below ground, this guy hopped out of the hole to keep a close eye on me while his mate watched me from the burrow.
Note:
Ever wonder why so many of my pics
are cropped double-square?
Well, the reasons I like "Double Square" images are that double-square takes maximum advantage of wide-screen monitors while maintaining maximum detail that can be viewed at even higher resolutions by using Flickr's magnifying tool.
And, besides, I'm in pretty good company there,
since Van Gogh seemed to like it 2!
Vibrant in looks the striped tiger #butterfly with tawny #wings can escape death from #predators due to nauseating #smell caused by its distasteful diet of #nectar from poisonous #plants
Residual Black Pepper Grain on the lid of a Pepper shaker.

Double Crested Cormorant (Nannopterum auritum) - Royal Palms, Anhinga Trail, Everglades National Park, Flamingo, Florida
"The look that makes me want to know you better!" *
Well that was the Fashion Mag def of "The Look" anyways.
But in this case this guy was lookin' at me and my 420 rig, or perhaps lookin' at the good lookin' critter it saw reflected by the rig's front lens element.
Yes, I used a tripod for this capture!
For this pic I used center spot focus on the eye, and then with the shutter button half down, composed the image. The reason for the tripod is that for standing, hand held shots your body can move as much as much as an inch in the time it takes to compose an image, and that's all it takes to loose focus on the eye when the DOF is less than an inch. So I carry a tripod pretty much all the time, and use it on all captures where a few inches can make a difference.
* The tag line from an old Clairol commercial.
Note:
No, this isn't a zoo pic, though the Anhinga Trail
can get pretty Zooy at times, and it's possible to get inside your MFD (minimum focus distance) with some of the critters you'll meet up with on the trail! Just be sure to make sure they're friendly before you get too close!
I like how the neck in the image humanizes the DCC and makes it look like it's looking at me over it's shoulder.
