Wood Lilies (a.k.a. Philadelphia Lily, Prairie Lily, Flame Lilly, or Western Red Lily; Lilium philadelphicum) - Penny Lake Preserve, Boothbay Harbor, Maine
From a distance I was thinkin' Turk's Cap, but as I got closer I was thinkin' "Holy Cow, Wood Lilies!". And what a sight to see, so Dah Wife, Bailey and I hustled back to the house to get my camera. But don't-cha know, as soon as I got home it started to rain! Lucky for me it didn't last long and I hustled back into the bush, to make these wet and wild captures!
'Cause if you've read my rules for nature photography in my Flickr profile, two of them are "never figure you can come back tomorrow", and "make the most of every situation", cause you never know when (or if) it will happen again!
Double Crested Cormorant (Nannopterum auritum) - Royal Palms, Anhinga Trail, Everglades National Park, Flamingo, Florida
"The look that makes me want to know you better!" *
Well that was the Fashion Mag def of "The Look" anyways.
But in this case this guy was lookin' at me and my 420 rig, or perhaps lookin' at the good lookin' critter it saw reflected by the rig's front lens element.
Yes, I used a tripod for this capture!
For this pic I used center spot focus on the eye, and then with the shutter button half down, composed the image. The reason for the tripod is that for standing, hand held shots your body can move as much as much as an inch in the time it takes to compose an image, and that's all it takes to loose focus on the eye when the DOF is less than an inch. So I carry a tripod pretty much all the time, and use it on all captures where a few inches can make a difference.
* The tag line from an old Clairol commercial.
Note:
No, this isn't a zoo pic, though the Anhinga Trail
can get pretty Zooy at times, and it's possible to get inside your MFD (minimum focus distance) with some of the critters you'll meet up with on the trail! Just be sure to make sure they're friendly before you get too close!
I like how the neck in the image humanizes the DCC and makes it look like it's looking at me over it's shoulder.
An eggshell lit from below using two Livarno plug-in reading lights as the only light source. It's surprisingly powerful - and using only one light I also needed to use the dimmer ;o) The next shot I've added a side light source.
I'd be delighted to hear your comments, and about your solutions to table-top macro shooting ;o)
I've added a set on studio and equipment shots here: www.flickr.com/photos/e_liddell/sets/72157643348402124/

Jack-in-the-Pulpit (Arisaema triphyllum) with a cedar siding BG - Suburban New Jersey, 25 miles west of "The City" (NYC)
I brought home some JIP seeds from the swamp 5 - 10 years ago, and now I have these guys growing wild around the edges of my lawn. Though I have to say that my lawn is not all that well defined and there's a short demilitarized zone between the grass and the areas left to the wild where Jack and his friends can be found.
Can you see Jack's little leaf hopper friend sharing the shelter of his pulpet?
Whilst I was doing the things my wife asked me to do "get them done!!" she was busy in the kitchen making meringues .... so my little treat for doing all that was asked of me was to have little one with a little bit of cream on top!!

Female Pileated Woodpecker - Suburban New Jersey, 25 miles west of "The City" (NYC)
Dah Wife heard this fem calling as she searched the dead wood around our home, and called me out of the basement to have a go at some pics.
This fem seemed a rather friendly sort, and posed nicely for me in the dim light as she picked through fallen logs on the ground looking for grubs.
At ISO 1600 and 1/100th of a second, and the way these guys move their heads, I got more motion blurred shots than crisp captures, though I shouldn't complain with one like this in the bag.

Florida Scarlet Snake (Cemophora coccinea coccinea) - Everglades National Park, Flamingo, Florida
We found this little guy wriggling across one of the side roads off the Main Park Road at Everglades National Park early in the evening.
Our first thought was CORAL SNAKE!
Then, not being 100% sure on the Florida Scarlet Snake ID,
kept a respectful distance just in case it wasn't a Scarlet.
FYI - This was a cooperative subject, so this pose/image is a 2 shot composite (click - click) that I mighta missed if I had to back away and refocus to get the whole snake in a single capture.
- Yep, the pattern on my last photo was peacock feathers. Here is the same peacock's head as I managed to get close enough. There are tiny shimmering feathers covering its head.
Green Heron (a.k.a. Little Green Heron; Butorides virescens) - Ritch Grissom Memorial Wetlands (Viera Wetlands), Melbourne, Florida
This guy was very cooperative, so I abandoned my 6 and got down in the weeds with the snakes & gators for a lower POV. I sat there with the 300 trained on it for about a half hour, and twice (for about 3 or 4 seconds) it got excited about something it spotted in the weeds and raised its crest. At those moments, pressing my face against the back of a camera for half an hour didn't seem all that extreme.

Baldwin's Eryngo (Eryngium baldwinii) - Tosohatchee Wildlife Management Area, 3365 Taylor Creek Rd, Christmas, Florida
At the end of the line.
(Past Lake Charlie, and as far as you can go 'til you run out of road.)
My thanks to Alan Franck for his help with this ID
Double Crested Cormorant (Nannopterum auritum) in full breeding colors - Green Cay Nature Center and Wetlands, 12800 Hagen Ranch Road, Boynton Beach, Florida
This guy was panting in the heat, and to my surprise I noticed he had some lovely blue color in his gullet that I'd never noticed before, though I'm sure the fems are aware of it and find it very handsome!
Supongo que se trata de llevarte el estudio a un rinconcito del campo. Flipo con las orquídeas.
Abrazos!

I changed our bathroom halogen light bulb and conveniently the glass from the bulb came out whole!! A hammer soon sorted that and I arranged the pieces carefully on a piece of black card.

Rue Anemone (Thalictrum thalictroides; a.k.a. Anemonella thalictroides) - Ken Lockwood Gorge, South Branch of the Raritan River, Califon, New Jersey
I found this guy right next to the northern most parking area at the southern entrance to the gorge, and picked this particular plant because I liked the way the leaves framed the blossom. It was leaning against the leaf of a large sedge grass that gave it stability, and when I bent the grass over to make this capture the stability was sacrificed and I wound up taking a dozen or so picks before the breeze was sufficiently calm enough to make this relatively crisp capture at 1/6th second. But yet another of the sacrifices we make for isolation and composition.

American Bittern (Botaurus lentiginosus) - Ritch Grissom Memorial Wetlands (a.k.a. Viera Wetlins), Melbourne, Florida
Not the first time I've been looked at cross-eyed,
and I suspect, not the last!
This guy was a very cooperative subject and gave me a hundred different poses over a half hour period with this one being the classic beak to the sky pose.
The eyes may not be bigger than the mouth,
but they certainly are across from it,
which gives these guys excellent depth perception
and eye to mouth coordination!
Coastal Rose Gentian (Sabatia calycina) - Tosohatchee Wildlife Management Area, 3365 Taylor Creek Rd, Christmas, Florida
Yet another Tosohatchee gem!
And I didn't even have to risk getting shot at to make this capture!
I'm not 100% certain on this ID, so if you have any ideas feel free to make suggestions.
It seems strange that this species is not included on the LBJ site, but it is listed on the USF Plant Atlas site.
My thanks to Mary Keim (for the link to the USF site), Jeff (from the Florida Wild Flower Foundation), and others who helped out with this plant ID.
