Brown Anole (a.k.a. Cuban Anole,Bahaman Anole or De la Sagra's Anole; Anolis sagrei) - Black Point Wildlife Drive, Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge, Tittusville, Florida

When looking for Pygmy Rattlesnakes it's always a good idea to look for things they like (like this tasty little Brown Anole).

It's also a good idea to be careful when you find a Pygmy rattler, and carefully follow the NWR rule about not harassing the wildlife. 'Cause as cute and cuddly as the little pygmies look,

they're fully capable of harassing you right back!

Great Blue Heron (Ardea herodias) - Gator Creek Road, Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge, Titusville, Florida

The approach-ability to Great Blues can vary considerably in Florida where there are some who will approach fishermen looking for a hand-out from the bait bucket, to other birds that will fly off when you get within 100 yards of them. Needless to say this guy was one of the friendlier ones, though it wasn't looking for a hand out, and was determined to catch its own diner.

It's also a little easier to get close to these guys when you stay in your car, and you can keep something (like the bush in the foreground) between you and the heron.

Male Atlantic Blue Crab in heavy camo (Callinectes sapidus) - Mosquito Lagoon, Biolab Road, Canaveral National Seashore, Wilson Florida

This was one lucky guy!

And one of the largest Blueclaws I've ever seen with a 6-7 inch shell from point to point, and claws bigger than my thumbs (which he might have done some serious damage to if I'd given him the chance when I picked him up to sex him. So he was pretty lucky I decided to let him walk instead of taking him home for dinner.

Notes:

Notice the minnows hovering over his left shoulder which I'm sure he'd eat if one decided to inspect his constantly moving mouth parts too closely.

I suspect that this guy is as big as he will ever get, and probably has all that moss growing on him because he reached full size quite a ways back, and hasn't shed his shell since then.

Spurge Nettle (a.k.a. Bull Nettle, Tread Softly, Finger Rot, Mala Mujer: Cnidoscolus stimulosus) - Smyrna Dunes Park, New Smyrna Beach, Florida

It's hard to believe, but this member of the Spurge Family has prickers that are so sharp and strong that one of their seed pods has pricked me through the bottom of my crocs (and had to be pulled out with a pliers)! Tread softly indeed!

And fuhgeddaboudit if you ever kneel on one!

Capsicum seeds.....

Alton Railroad #5289 - USRA Light Pacific steam locomotive built 1919. N gauge model made by Atlas.

I've had this model for over 30 years, stored away with many others, all of which are now part of a dream never to be fulfilled. There always seem to be competing interests and never the time to do everything that one would like. As I gain in years lived it seems I get that much slower !

Had a difficulty deciding that this was a 'small item' but it certainly is in comparison with the original, and this is clearly a small scale 'model'.

My grubby fingers !

Olympus OM Auto-Macro 50mm ...................................... just 2 inches

We are in the middle of being battered by some powerful storms and high winds at the moment so this is the result of some table top macro fun on an otherwise cold, wet, damp, miserable, stormy night.

Golden Silk Orbweaver (Nephila clavipes) - Center Road, (a.k.a. P.A.P.I. Lights Road), Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge, Wilson, Florida

Are leg warmers back?

Well, maybe not, but they never went out of style as far as this girl is concerned. And she liked these black, faux fur ones so much she bought 5* pair!!!

These guys are quite common in the Space Coast area, and it pays to keep an eye out for them along the trails, since they can get to be 2 - 3 inches in size, and it's not a whole lotta fun to catch one in the face if you're not payin' attention while walkin' the trails.

However, even though these guys are quite common in my area, I find them difficult to photograph since their webs are usually 5 - 10 feet off the ground, and the webs can move around quite a bit in the breeze. So, when I see one on a calm day with a nice BG, I make an effort to take advantage of those circumstances.

FYI - If you look closely at the web you can see the golden color of the silk (where the light hits it just right) from whence they got their name.

* Six pair, were she not missing a leg.

Double Crested Cormorant (Nannopterum auritum) - Royal Palm (Anhinga Trail), Everglades National Park, Florida

I came across this guy sitting on the Anhinga Trail boardwalk railing, and in my usual manner I took an ensurance shot at a respectable distance and then moved closer for another. Keeping my eye on the viewfinder I moved closer and closer taking shots along the way until my camera malfunctioned and I could no longer focus. After a few seconds I realized it wasn't a malfunction, but the problem was that I was inside my 5 foot MFD, so I set the lens to its closest focus point in macro mode, and then used my feet to focus (i.e. set the 300's focus at the 1.5 meter MFD, and then used the camera to subject distance to focus). If I had thought to put on some of the X-tubes I had in my pocket, I could have got a really good look at its eye.

I called this shot "Sea Blue" because (aside from the pun) a decent number of diving sea birds have a blue iris, which I believe is the best color to see prey in a blue, shallow water environment. I haven't seen that explanation in any texts yet, but it sounds right to me.

Update

I've been in contact with several "experts" on the topic of iris color, and they say that the retina is what birds see with (duh), and the iris is all about aperture and has nothing to do with vision.

But I on the other hand (pun intended) think they are over simplifying, and continue to believe that nature has reasons (other than fem cormorants dig mates with big blue eyes), and that there is in fact a visual benefit to these shallow diving birds having blue eyes.

One possibility may be the manner in which sophisticated spectrophotometric light detectors often bump up (adjust) the "dark current" to raise the light gathering diode current above the "dark signal" to even out the signal, reduce noise, and obtain a more even spectrum. So my theory is that the iris is not 100% opaque, and lets through a small amount of blue light to raise the retina's receptors above the threshold level thereby making any additional light coming through the pupil detectable (i.e. see-able).

Old time astronomers also used a similar trick with film, when they pre-exposed their sheet film with small, even amounts of light to break the silver halide trigger threshold to make film used to record distant stars more sensitive to light.

Of course the other popular eye color for some of the deeper divers (loons, grebes, murre, Harlequins, Mergansers, Long-tails, etc.), and the more land based Night Herons is red, and we all know that red has the most sensitive color receptors (cones) on the retina, and is the color light we like to use to see things where it's really dark (like 50 feet under murky water).

So what do you think?

Is it possible that iris color increases visual acuity in low light?

No definitive study has yet to be done on the topic,

and I think it might be a good topic for an ornithologically inclined PhD thesis.

So go for it, and prove me wrong! :{)

Florida gar (Lepisosteus platyrhincus) - Black Point Drive, Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge, Titusville, Florida

One of the types of fist that can survive in the low oxygen waters of the many stagnant roadside ditches in Florida. There's also plenty of minnows in those ditches, and these guys aren't shy about eating all they can get their pointy little teeth into.

Cape Leadwort (a.k.a. Blue Plumbago, Cape Plumbago; Plumbago auriculata) - The Space Coast of Florida

And yet another backyard beauty from South Africa.

Beatuiful, but beware (as is inferred by its name) that ingesting this plant can cause "blood poisoning". Not in the way that lead causes blood/lead poisoning, but that chemicals in the plant (not lead) can lower the blood's white cell count and compromise the body's ability to fight infections. Skin contact with Blue Plumbago's juices can also cause serious cases of skin dermatitis in some individuals. So it's a good idea to enjoy the beauty of this flowering shrub from a distance!
