Autumn Moments no 7 - red berries

Autumn is not only the flaming red leaves of maples and acers, it is also packed with bright red berries. We have a rowan tree, cotoneaster hedges, climbing firethorn, and a huge bed of wild roses - so the garden is an impressionistic painting with dabs of bright red everywhere. It seemed like a good good way to round off my "7 days of autumn" ;o)

What better place to teach your son the basics of surfing but on a nice private beach...I just couldn't resist getting this shot of the two of them..

With the snow still piled high across the top roads, the fence posts are a useful guide this week ;o)

Many of the goldenrod in our fields have these bulbous growths on their stems. They contain the larva of the Eurosta (gall fly). In the fall the female Eurosta deposits eggs on just the right species of goldenrod. The resulting fly larva excretes chemicals which induce the plant to produce a gall. This becomes the larva's food. As the gall grows, the larva excavates a central chamber in which it will live until

the following Spring. Before it settles down for the winter though, it also excavates an emergence tunnel...preparing for Spring. Fascinating stuff....more marvels of nature.

We finally got a bit of rain the other day, the 4th time it rained in 2013. Good thing November and December were excessively wet months.

I appreciate a lot your comments, invites, awards and faves! Thank you very much !!!! ; )))

How to keep warm, in the winter, when the power's out? First, dig your car out of the snow then go for a drive and turn on the heater full blast.
