Time was when the only visitors flocking to Gretna Green were eloping English couples.

Now the Scottish border village is getting arrivals by the million - and most of them come by air.

Swooping and swirling across the dimly lit sky, they could almost be mistaken for an approaching storm cloud. Here they seem to form one large bird.

In this dazzling aerial display, over a million starlings wheel and dive across the setting sun, creating elaborate patterns and drawing the admiring gaze of fascinated onlookers.

As I stood on this boardwalk last week, I thought this would make a fun photo-manipulation.

Which way do you choose?

We always have to make the choice which way we'd like to go.

In the spring these rocks are under a couple of feet of water....in the early fall, I was able to get out in the middle of the river for this shot.

Take a look at Breff's shot of this dome, it's amazing!

... before the dawn. Not a great shot, through the car windscreen in the dark at 50mph.

I liked the sense of headlights cutting through the darkness, and the distant emerging daylight on the horizon. I hope it is worth the lack of quality!

We had our first "real" snowstorm today. There was about an inch, but it's warm, so it's melting. Still, more snow is forecast for the next few days. They call it "lake effect" snow. I'm not sure how that differs from other snow, but apparently the weather patterns are dictated somehow by the Finger Lakes and the Great Lakes.

Southern Finland.

Lots of these about today, they are so tiny.

Explored, thanks everyone!

Thank you for visiting and all of your kind words.

You just made me smile! :)

California Quail. The California Quail is a highly sociable bird that often gathers in small flocks known as "coveys". Quail are vegetarians. Eating mostly seeds and berries, a hungry quail will eat leaves, roots or some small insects. IMG_9341
