The timing of this publication (Aug-Sep 1940) is notable. After concluding the Molotov-Ribbentrop Treaty with Nazi Germany and, according to the treaty's secret provision, dividing Poland with Hitler in 1939, Stalin's Soviet Union urged its minions in the US and elsewhere to remain neutral when the fall of Poland sparked World War II. It was a fight between capitalist exploiters and colonial powers, according to Russian propaganda. Sympathy in the West for Finland and the Baltic states, as well as anger over the USSR's seizure of much of Poland, might have led Stalin to fear that the US would act against both Germany and his regime, if America got involved in the conflict. That was the situation when the paperback was published in 1940. Accordingly, the book begins with "Lights in the Marshes," in which a Polish author laments the suffering of Polish peasants under the old regime. It includes such reassuring tales as "Stories of Western Ukraine," which begins with a description of Poles welcoming their Soviet liberators. None of the stories beat the drums of war against fascism, though there is a reprint of Lenin's speech of May, 1917, on "War and Revolution." (He favored the latter.)

So it went between the fall of 1939 and the summer of 1941, when Germany launched a surprise attack on Stalin's forces. Thanks to the surprise, better equipment, and ruthless tactics on the German side, the USSR quickly lost millions of men and thousands of miles of territory. Stalin's army was also hindered by the effects of his savage purge of military commanders and other revolutionary leaders in the years before the attack. Stalin's initial disbelief that his fellow totalitarian had betrayed him didn't help either. His first orders were to "avoid provoking" the Germans. Eventually the realization sank in, and the propaganda machine began producing a very different line: For the good of the world, as well as the Soviet regime, the USA should enter the war against the Axis powers.

Incredibly - I took this shot at the very instant that Adam took a shot from my right with his flash.. I mean - what are the odds? I was shooting available light - he was using flash, and we were both taking pictures of the girls outside the Little Rhein Restaurant on the Riverwalk in San Antonio. Jo Ann was on the phone with Travis, so we were just standing around till she finished, and this was the result.. I had to bring the exposure down in processing to keep the brightness from Adam's flash from washing out the photo - but it was just such a coincidence, I had to post it..

Blipfoto Post for Tuesday 16 November 2010: Patience, Timing and Balance...

Are three virtues that I find very difficult to acheive for my photography at this time of year.

Patience: My commute is at a fixed time of day so there is a brief period of the year when my journey takes me across the River Forth at the right time of day to experience the sunrise. This happens twice a year, once in November and once in February so I only get a chance to get this picture about twice a year.

Timing: The light changes fast at this time of day and the sky and water light up like this for only a few minutes so you have to be fast to get into position to take the shot.

Balance: At this time of year the pavement is covered in ice....so dashing the few hundred yards from the car to the required position for the shot carrying a camera and tripod requires a lot of balance on such a slippery surface.

I'm happy to report that all three came together this morning and this shot is (I believe) an improvement on the last two shots taken last February and November. Now all I have to do is wait until February for my next attempt!
