This is a photograph from the first round of the Mullingar Road League which was held in Belvedere House and Gardens, Mullingar, Co. Westmeath, Ireland on Wednesday 7th May 2014 at 20:00. The race follows the roads and trails around Belvedere and is a very testing 5KM route. The race is promoted by Mullingar Harriers for the Pat Finnerty Memorial Cup. Competitors need to run 3 races out of the 4 races in May (any order) to be considered in the overall placing in categories at the conclusion of the league. Over 350 people took part in tonight's event. The weather was positively wintry with a very cold wind in the face of runners for the 1KM and the final KM of the race.

As mentioned above we take these photographs as a hobby and as a voluntary contribution to the running community in Ireland. Very often we have actually ran in the same race and then switched to photographer mode after we finished the race. Consequently, we feel that we have no obligations to capture a photograph of every participant in the race. However, we do try our very best to capture as many participants as possible. But this is sometimes not possible for a variety of reasons:
►You were hidden behind another participant as you passed our camera
►Weather or lighting conditions meant that we had some photographs with blurry content which we did not upload to our Flickr set
►There were too many people - some races attract thousands of participants and as amateur photographs we cannot hope to capture photographs of everyone
►We simply missed you - sorry about that - we did our best!
You can email us petermooney78 AT gmail DOT com to enquire if we have a photograph of you which didn't make the final Flickr selection for the race. But we cannot promise that there will be photograph there. Le Cercle Jules ferry organise son 35 tournoi interrégional de foot en salle, sur quatre journées, à la salle du Naye.
Le traditionnel tournoi de Noël du Cercle Jules Ferry est réservé, comme l’an dernier, aux enfants nés en 2006 et 2007 pour la catégorie des U13, et 2008-2009 pour celle des U11.
Le tournoi se tient à la salle du Naye, près de la piscine. Il débute avec les U11 ce jeudi, avec le premier match à 9 h, et se clôturera vendredi 28 décembre, avec une finale prévue à 19 h.
Le tournoi des U13 se déroulera du samedi 29, à 9 h, au dimanche 30 décembre, à 19 h.
« Nous renouvelons cette formule expérimentée lors de notre dernière édition.
Cela nous permet d’accueillir des équipes venant de loin.
Les horaires de matchs leur permettent de visiter Saint-Malo » explique Nicolas Le Guernic, l’éducateur du Cercle qui participe à l’organisation de ce tournoi depuis vingt-cinq ans.
Pour les deux catégories, le principe est le même, les 36 équipes se rencontrent le premier jour sur des matchs de qualification (six poules de six équipes), puis en fonction de leurs résultats et leurs classements, elles disputeront les phases finales dès le lendemain.
« Les deux premiers de chaque poule se qualifient pour la Coupe du Monde, les 3 et 4 en Coupe d’Europe et les 5 et 6 en Coupe de France » précise Nicolas Le Guernic.
De belles affiches seront au programme tout au long de ces quatre journées avec notamment la présence de clubs professionnels comme EA Guingamp, FC Redstar 93 et AC Le Havre. L’US Saint-Malo, l’AS Jacques-Cartier et l’US Château Malo seront de la partie.
Le club de Tarbes, dans les Pyrénées, fera le plus long déplacement pour sa première participation.
En U11 comme en U13, l’équipe la plus Fair-Play et le meilleur public seront récompensés.
« Des trophées individuels seront également remis aux meilleurs buteurs, jongleurs, gardiens de but et joueurs » ajoute-t-il.
Qui succédera au RC Joinville en U11 et au FC Dinan Léhon en U13 ? Ce jeudi 27 décembre, à partir de 9 h, à la salle du Naye.
Le tournoi de football de Noël organisé par le Cercles Jules Ferry, au Naye, accueille des jeunes joueurs de toute la France, jusqu’à dimanche. 600 enfants, 35 équipes et huit arbitres sont rassemblés pour une rencontre pleine de fair-play.
À l’initiative du Cercle Jules-Ferry, autour de 600 jeunes footballeurs U 11 et U 13 se retrouvent depuis le jeudi 27 décembre et jusqu’au dimanche 30 décembre sur le parquet de la salle des sports du Naye. Le tournoi de Noël fête cette année sa 35e édition.
Ils sont venus de la région parisienne, de Normandie, de Tarbes, pour la première fois, et bien sûr de tous les départements bretons à l’exception de celui du Morbihan. Depuis jeudi, 9 h, et jusqu’à 21 h et ce vendredi, de 9 h à 19 h 30, les matches de sept minutes s’enchaînent les uns après les autres. Une seule minute de battement est observée entre deux parties. C’est à ce prix que le timing d’une journée peut être respecté.
Neuf matches au moins par équipe
Les premiers à s’élancer ont été les plus jeunes. Au total, 35 équipes au lieu des 36 escomptées. « Les équipes - dont certaines sont mixtes - disputent chacune au moins cinq matches la première journée et quatre le lendemain, explique Nicolas Le Guernic, le responsable du tournoi. Nous essayons de les regrouper pour laisser du temps au repos, à la promenade et à la découverte de Saint-Malo. C’est une formule qui plaît bien. »
Les clubs professionnels (Le Havre, Rouen Quevilly, Guingamp et le Red Star) sont hébergés chez des familles d’accueil. Les autres trouvent refuge dans les hôtels, auberges de jeunesse, gîtes…
Cercle Jules-Ferry et USSM
Huit arbitres officiels de la Côte d’Émeraude qui veillent au bon déroulement des épreuves. Devant des tribunes bien garnies, les jeunes se serrent la main avant le début de leur match. Chaque dirigeant doit noter les trois meilleurs gardiens, les trois meilleurs joueurs et ceux qui font preuve de plus de fair-play. Le meilleur buteur est aussi récompensé. « Tout se déroule dans une excellente ambiance », remarque le directeur du tournoi assis à la table officielle auprès de Pascal Nédelec de l’USSM. Preuve de la bonne entente entre deux clubs malouins.
Le tournoi verra, samedi et dimanche, les U 13 entrer en lice. Ceux qui ne peuvent pas se déplacer peuvent suivre les épreuves en direct sur la page Facebook du tournoi de Noël du Cercle Jules-Ferry.

My sister-in-law and her hubby are due just a few weeks ahead of us, which means my new babe will have a cousin almost the same age. Sweet.
This is a photograph from the 6th annual Longwood Village 10KM and 5KM Road Races and Fun Runs 2015 which were held in Longwood Village, Co. Meath, Ireland on Sunday 18th October 2015 at 11:00. This is the sixth year which Longwood GAA/Village have hosted race events. This year's event was an outstanding success and builds on the fantastic success of last year's race. The overall number of participants, including walkers, was over 440 which is up on last year's final numbers. There was over 220 runners and joggers in the 10KM while there was almost 200 runners, joggers and walkers in the 5KM. The events were organised as fundraisers for both the adult and juvenille teams at Longwood GAA club. The event also provided a fundraising opportunity for the local St. Vincent de Paul charity. Overall the whole day was a great success with the hard work put in by the organising committee ensuring that participants enjoyed their race experience. Both routes were accurately measured, kilometer points clearly marked, junctions well stewarded, and electronic timing provided. The event provided many local runners, joggers, fun runners and walkers with a local event to support whilst at the same time providing runners preparing for events such as the Dublin marathon with an opportunity to race a short, fast, distance in the lead up to marathon day. The GAA club provided excellent stewarding and traffic management all around the course. The race had a professional feel to it and it is sure to grow next year given the very positive feedback from many of the participants today.

Longwood is a small village in South East Co. Meath and is close to the town of Enfield with access to the M4 Motorway. The weather was almost perfect for road running. A beautiful crisp autumn morning with dry cool conditions. 5KM Course: The 5KM started in Longwood village. Runners then took a left turn in the Village down St. Oliver's Road. This straight section of road brings runners to a left turn onto a very well maintained boreen road for less than one kilometer. The race then emerges and joins with the 10KM at Stoneyford where the runners take a left and then another left before arriving back at the finish line in Longwood GAA club. Overall this is a very fast and flat 5KM with no hills to speak of.
10KM Course: The 10KM event begins in Longwood Village outside Dargan's Pub and proceeds westward out of the village. There are some interesting points along this part of the course. At the 2KM point the runners will run under the double bridges - an aquaduct for the Royal Canal and a bridge carrying the Dublin Sligo Railway line. The race then enters county Kildare just before the 3km and after taking a right turn at the four-cross roads known locally as Lally's Cross it returns to County Meath on top of the River Boyne Bridge (Ashfield Bridge) which forms the county boundary. The race follows a straight road for the next 2KM until runners encounter Blackshade bridge which is the toughest climb on the route. As a point of interest Blackshade bridge brings runners back over the Royal Canal and the Railway line. The race then crosses the River Boyne again at Stoneyford before taking a right which will bring runners on a testing two kilometer stretch with some short hills. The 10KM course then joins with the 5Km course for the final 1.5KM back to Longwood GAA club for the finish.

...is what it takes to capture an interesting wave. But I find most waves interesting, not just the ones that burst on the shoreline.
Every fisherman and photographer has a million "the one that got away" stories and this is one more entry. I was sitting in a right turn lane waiting for my light and took this as a zoom thru the windshield. The instant I took it, my light turned green so I lowered the camera and started rolling. Exactly one nanosecond later, a cop pulled up to this biker's right and was checking him out pretty close but I already had cars rolling behind me so I couldn't get the big bonus shot. Aaargh.

This is a photograph from the Rathfarnham 5KM Road Race and Fun Run which took place in Rathfarnham, Co. Dublin, Ireland on Sunday 29th September 2013 at 10:00.
This is one of the most popular runs in South County Dublin and is held in support of St. Luke's Cancer Hospital, Rathgar. This year's race attracted over 1,300 participants and the run is open to runners, joggers and walkers. The course is one of the fastest 5ks in the country with a downhill start and finish. This is an excellently organised race with marhsalling at every junction and Garda enforced road closures for the duration of the race.

Overall Race Summary
Participants: There was a record number of participants with over 1,300 people taking to the start line.
Weather: This race was held on a beautiful autumn morning. There was little or no breeze and there was mild temperatures of around 15C for the race.
Course: Overall this course is a flat and fast course. There is a net gain of 15M over the whole course with slightly downhill gradients at the start and towards the finish. The course is completely left-handed which makes for favourable conditions. All being equal the course provides an excellent opportunity for every from elite competitors to joggers to set a fast time for themselves.
The race starts at the easterly side of the N81 Tempelogue Road and Springfield Avenue. The start area is shown here on Google StreetView (goo.gl/maps/kg7FY). The race follows Springfield Avenue along the side of Bushy Park. The race overlaps the final kilometer and the finish as it proceeds to the Rathfarnham Road (Shown here Google Streetview goo.gl/maps/gRrI6). The route heads north on Rathfarnham road as there is a very gentle incline until the junction with the Temleogue Road is reached and runners make a sharp left turn onto the N81 (shown here Google StreetView goo.gl/maps/51S2t). The race then heads south along Templeogue Road where the runners can see the course unfold straight infront of them. The race turns left at Springfield Avenue again (start area) and the final Kilometer is as the first to the finish area (Google Streetview goo.gl/maps/1R08S) just before the Rathfarnham Road Junction.

This is a photograph from the first annual running of the Rás na Rà 5KM Road Race, Fun Run, and Walk which was held at Seneschalstown GFC, Beauparc, Navan, Co. Meath, Ireland on Saturday March 15th 2014 at 12:00. The event was promoted by Duleek and District Athletic Club. Car parking, changing rooms, showers, and refreshments were provided in the GAA club.
Timing and event management was provided by Precision Timing. The race starts about 1KM from the race HQ at the lovely setting of Beauparc Railway Crossing on the old Navan-Drogheda railway line (race start here goo.gl/maps/SVWWY). The race proceeds in an anti-clockwise left handed loop, following the L1600, and passing the GAA grounds before taking a left to Dollardstown, to Yellow Furze, and bringing runners back to the start area at Beauparc for the final kilometer of the race back to the finish. The organisation was perfect for the race. All road junctions were properly stewarded. The kilometer markers were clear to see and there was lots of room for runners entering the finish area. Excellent work by the race committee. The race acted as fund raiser for the local Knockcommon National School (Scoil Naoimh Pio), Beauparc, Co Meath

The timing didn't work out as I planned on this shot but I still like it. The double exposure made dark eyes/nose/mouth in the midst of the red gelatine. So it looks like the skin peeling off leaving behind the red within.

This is a photograph from the annual Ardagh Moydow Glen Community Games 5KM and 10 Mile road races, fun runs, walks and challenges which were held in the heritage village of Ardagh, Co. Longford, Ireland on Tuesday 27th December 2016 at 13:00. This year's race featured some changes from previous years: the introduction of chip timing, a new start and finish in the middle of the village at the community center and, a slightly amended route.

The 10 mile race takes in the local 'Ardagh Mountain' which is a 1 mile continuous climb starting at the 2.5 mile mark of the 10 mile race. The 5KM race takes a loop around the heritage village of Ardagh. Overall this is a very well organised race with accurate courses, good marshalling and traffic control and excellent after race refreshments. The 10 mile race is one of the longest road races held during the Christmas period anywhere in Ireland and has appeal to runners who want to add a longer distance race to their festive calendar of running.
The weather at this year's race was much more suitable to road racing. In 2014 there was very frosty icy weather and last year in 2015 participants were given a very very windy day with heavy rain at the finish of both races.
Ardagh is probably County Longford's most picturesque village with many historical and architecturally important features. It is located about 6 miles from Longford town.

American comedian Joe E. Brown (1891-1973) is dearly remembered for his portrayal as Osgood Fielding III in Billy Wilder's Some Like It Hot (1959), in which he utters the famous punchline "Well, nobody's perfect". With his amiable screen persona, comic timing, and enormous elastic-mouth smile, Brown was one of the most popular American comedians in the 1930s and 1940s, with successful films like A Midsummer Night's Dream (1935), Earthworm Tractors (1936) and Alibi Ike (1935).
Joseph Evans Brown was born in Holgate, Ohio, in 1891 (according to IMDb 1892). One of his proudest claims was that he was perhaps the only kid whose parents encouraged him to run away with the circus. In 1902, the 10-year-old Brown joined a circus tumbling act called the Five Marvellous Ashtons, with whom he started his vaudeville career. He toured in burlesque in an acrobatic act, and also briefly played semi-professional baseball. His avid interest in baseball inaugurated a lifelong association with that sport which would include his participation in the National Vaudeville Artists ball team, his part-ownership of the minor league Kansas City Blues, and his providing pregame 'colour' for the televised New York Yankees games of the 1950s (Joe's son Joe L. became manager of the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1955). On the verge of leaving vaudeville for Broadway in 1919, Joe discovered that Actors' Equity had called a strike; with very little hesitation, he grabbed a sign and joined the picket line. In 1920, Brown finally made it to Broadway as a comedian in the all-star review Jim Jam Jems. He went on to star in such New York productions as Captain Jinks and Twinkle Twinkle. In 1927, he began his film career in the short comedy
Twinkle, Twinkle (1927). Uncharacteristically he appeared in turgid melodramas like Crooks Can't Win (George M. Arthur, 1928) until he was signed by Warner Bros. in 1929.
Joe E. Brown became a favorite with child audiences and shot to stardom after appearing in the first all-color all-talking musical comedy On with the Show (Alan Crosland, 1929). He starred in a number of lavish Technicolor Warner Brothers musical comedies including Sally (John Francis Dillon, 1929), Hold Everything (Roy Del Ruth, 1930), Song of the West (Ray Enright, 1930), and Going Wild (William A. Seiter, 1930). In his popular Warners vehicles, Joe E. Brown alternated between playing naive young men who made good despite impossible odds, or brash braggarts who had to be taken down a peg or two. His trademark was his huge mouth, cavernous grin, and drawn-out yell. Joe's best films were those in which he was permitted to display his athletic prowess, such as his 'baseball trilogy' Fireman Save My Child (Lloyd Bacon, 1932), Elmer the Great (Mervyn LeRoy, 1933) and Alibi Ike (Ray Enright, 1935). Personally selected by Max Reinhardt to play Flute in the lavish Warners adaptation of William Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream (Max Reinhardt, William Dieterle, 1935), Brown easily stole the show from such formidable competition as James Cagney, Olivia de Havilland, Victor Jory, and Mickey Rooney. Another hit was Earthworm Tractors (Ray Enright, 1936). During his Warner years, Brown and his wife began sponsoring promising college athletes: among Joe's proteges were UCLA football star (and later producer) Mike Frankovitch, and Olympic contestant (and future politician) Ralph Metcalfe. After ending his Warners contract in 1936, Brown starred for independent producer David Loew in When's Your Birthday? (Bob Clampett, Leon Schlesinger, 1937) and The Gladiator (Edward Sedgwick, 1938). In 1939, Brown testified before the House Immigration Committee in support of a bill that would allow 20,000 German Jewish refugee children into the US. He later adopted two refugee children.
By the early 1940s, Joe E. Brown's pictures were strictly in the 'B' category, though some of them, notably his brace of co-starring assignments with comedienne Judy Canova, had glimmers of the old Brown magic. He worked tirelessly entertaining troops in all corners of the world during World War II; their enthusiastic response enabled Brown to overcome the death of his son, Captain Donald Evans Brown, in a training accident. After the war, Brown devoted most of his energies to stage work. In 1948, he was awarded a Special Tony Award for his work in the touring company of Harvey. On-screen he played Captain Andy in Show Boat in the MGM remake of Show Boat (George Sidney, 1951) with Ava Gardner. In 1961, he reprised the role on stage. He added television to his long list of accomplishments in the 1950s and 1960s. Most of Joe E. Brown's final film appearances were cameo roles, such as in Around the World in 80 Days (Michael Anderson, 1956), and It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World (Stanley Kramer, 1963). The outstanding exception was his portrayal of daffy millionaire Osgood Fielding III in Some Like It Hot (Billy Wilder, 1959). Fielding falls for Daphne, played by Jack Lemmon in drag. At the end of the film, Lemmon takes off his wig and reveals to Brown that he is a man, to which Brown brings down the house by uttering the film's classic punchline: "Well, nobody's perfect." Brown began having heart problems in 1968, after suffering a severe heart attack and underwent cardiac surgery. He died from arteriosclerosis in 1973 at his home in Brentwood, Los Angeles, California, three weeks before his 82nd birthday.

This is a photograph from the annual Navan Athletic Club 6KM Road Race and Fun Run which was held at Claremont Stadium, Navan, Co. Meath, Ireland on Friday 8th May 2015 at 20:00. The race is organised as a memorial to former club members Simon Cumbers and Paddy Hyland. The weather defied its position in the calendar as a race in early May with dreary wet conditions for the race. However the conditions for running were actually reasonably good considering the weather of the previous 24 hours. The race starts about 1KM away from the Claremont Stadium with the finish on the tartan track.

I ran in the race - but my photograph doesn't appear here in your Flickr set! What gives?
As mentioned above we take these photographs as a hobby and as a voluntary contribution to the running community in Ireland. Very often we have actually ran in the same race and then switched to photographer mode after we finished the race. Consequently, we feel that we have no obligations to capture a photograph of every participant in the race. However, we do try our very best to capture as many participants as possible. But this is sometimes not possible for a variety of reasons:
►You were hidden behind another participant as you passed our camera
►Weather or lighting conditions meant that we had some photographs with blurry content which we did not upload to our Flickr set
►There were too many people - some races attract thousands of participants and as amateur photographs we cannot hope to capture photographs of everyone
►We simply missed you - sorry about that - we did our best!
You can email us petermooney78 AT gmail DOT com to enquire if we have a photograph of you which didn't make the final Flickr selection for the race. But we cannot promise that there will be photograph there. As alternatives we advise you to contact the race organisers to enquire if there were (1) other photographs taking photographs at the race event or if (2) there were professional commercial sports photographers taking photographs which might have some photographs of you available for purchase. You might find some links for further information above.
