New York Central Mott Haven Yard elevated view with electric locomotives switching passenger cars in the Bronx,New York City, ca 1947. In the background you may observe a S motor # 101with some heavyweight Pullman sleeping cars and in the foreground you can see a Q motor # 156, another switcher with an employee standing on the walkway. There is a great number of passenger cars in the yard all due to the fact that the New York Central ran numerous long distance passenger trains from New York City to distant points in America along with having a large commuter service to and from the local metropolitan area. This yard is a thrid rail DC facility. In this yard the cars are cleaned, repaired, maintained and serviced. The yard is situated about five miles or so from Grand Central Terminal and just prior to reaching the yard the Hudson Line turns out to the West and at the yard the Harlem Branch passes by with both NYC and New Haven Railroad trains being operated on the line.

6 January 1985 was the final day of service on the Paris suburban line from Pont Cardinet to Auteuil. This was the penultimate stretch of the once extensive third rail network which used to spread from Paris St Lazare. The Z1500 third rail electric sets entered service in 1930 and were built by Horme et Buire, formed of a motor and trailer car. Z1529 is seen here at Passy La Muette. Six of these sets would continue in use until later in the year on the line from Puteaux to Issy Plaine, being replaced by Z5100 units converted to third rail operation until the line closed for conversion to light rail in the 1990s.

New Haven Railroad Westinghouse EP-2 motor 0331 with a westbound Springfield passenger train is seen heading to GCT on the New York Central 3rd rail fly-over at Woodlawn, New York, 9-25-1948. The heavyweight RPO coupled to the motor is painted in a light color along with a green window band stripe to help it match in with the new modern lightweight stainless steel passenger cars. The straight tracks beneath the fly-over is the New York Central Harlem Division, which is primarily a commuter train operation. When New Haven Railroad trains are hading eastbound they operate on the first track to the right beyond the NYC tracks and then change from 3rd rail DC operation to AC overhead cateneary operation. To my Flickr friends: I am the late train of the title, and your photostream is the station. Some of you have been great about visiting my photos, even when I have been less than consistent in visiting yours. Thank you, and I hope you also know that, when I do finally get around to visiting, I don't just sprint through your last photo; I normally take a good look at most of your recent posts, and comment on (and/or fave) at least a few. Have patience, and the train will eventually arrive.

(Hey, this was chosen for the Worldworx front page, a decent honour when you're on the Explore blacklist.)

P.S. I caved in and got Photomatix, even though I've always prided myself on blending layers more manually. Photomatix makes it easy, at the cost of some control. I don't like garish HDR, but Photomatix also does tasteful and natural blends. Here I fused 3 exposures, and still tinkered with it in the GIMP. I didn't quite like full colour, or black & white, so I combined a bluish colourized version with low-saturation layer.

On 15 March 1986 the Southern Electric Group (SEG) and Locomotive Club of Great Britain (LCGB) organised a railtour (The Vulcan Vantrain) from London Paddington to East Sussex and Kent. After arriving at Ashford (Kent) via Hastings, loco-hauled, the train split, with part of the train being worked by MLV class 419 Motor Luggage Vans on a circular trip via Minster and Dover and the other part running to Folkestone Harbour and back, loco hauled. Each part of the train then changed traction and ran the other route. The complete train then returned to London, loco-hauled. In this view, 68005 and 68001 are at Sandwich with their six coaches. This was an unusual case of the MLVs running using their vacuum brake system.

At this time both third rail suburban and long distance trains to Berlin still had to share the same tracks, but work had started to quadruple the line by clearing of the lineside bushes.
