Tempting fate, I went back with some friend to get some more photos of the now closed Chesapeake Kmart store. We went around for at least ten minutes going past the caution taped areas to get photos and panoramas and nobody said a word! I suppose the 911 lady was gone.
Wow. I am tempted to send in photos, or a note asking if this person has thought to check Marx Hardware.

I have always been fascinated by strangler figs. Strangler fig is the common name for a number of tropical plant species (particularly of the genus Ficus) that share a common "strangling" growth habit. This growth habit is an adaptation to growing in dark forests where the competition for light is intense. Strangler figs suck up the nutrients from their victims, causing them to die eventually. These plants are spending the first part of their life without rooting into the ground. Their seeds, often bird-dispersed, germinate in crevices atop other trees. These seedlings grow their roots downward and envelop the host tree while also growing upward to reach into the sunlight zone above the canopy. An original support tree can sometimes die, as was the case here, so that the strangler fig becomes a tree with a hollow central core, tempting this guy to climb up on the inside.
She's already been damaged by this barn cat (bandage under her chin) but she's going to try again..... Learning the hard way.
I couldn't believe the Longhorns were eating on these chollas! They were attacking them trying to bite off just the yellow pods from the old blooms. Their noses were full of thorns. The pods must have been at just the right stage to tempt them. It was like it was torture but yet they really couldn't help themselves. You'd have thought it was loco weed.

Lots of insects and spiders are starting to appear now, whenever we have a sunny hour or two to tempt them into view. It was especially nice to see this queen buff-tailed bumblebee, because it's only the queen which actually has a buff tail - the others are hard to tell apart from the white-tailed.
