A long exposure, landscape image of a local Portknockie lad considering taking on the very large waves breaking over the harbour wall.

A week or so ago, I wrote about my favourite (endangered) Garry oak meadow. I wasn't very clear. As often happens, I was arguing from more than one place at once. A couple of commenters misunderstood me completely... and I don't blame them. I was pretty muddled. Here's what I was trying to say (and I'll try to be clearer).

Our world has reached a stage where hardly anything is "natural." Think about it. Try to name just one thing. It's nearly impossible, given how much we humans have altered the planet. Even the weather... which would seem the most natural thing of all... is so mucked up because of what we've done to the environment.

Last year, some scientists reported the results of their study of highrise window grime around Toronto. They found significant amounts of chemicals banned in North America for decades... presumably carrried here by atmospheric systems from less developed countries with fewer regulations.

More recently, I listened to a radio doc. in which a young Canadian recounted her experience living in China for a year. She tried to ride a bicycle and couldn't; couldn't breathe. Even walking, she said she sometimes vomited from the sheer thickness of the air pollution.

Tempting, when you hear that, to look around smugly at your own apparently wide-open spaces, and clean air, and pristine wilderness... but, no. It's not pristine. Nothing is any more. Because the whole broader global ecosystem has been altered in presumably irreversable ways.

And here's another anecdote to illustrate the point.

Some years ago, there was a massive fire in Yellowstone Park; it burned for weeks. It stymied all firefighting efforts and, at one point, someone said "Why not let it burn?" That's what would happen in nature, after all. Forest fires were part of the natural order of things... clearing out brush and dead wood and whatnot and making space for rejuvenated habitat.

But that only works within a natural system. And we ain't got one. Not any more. And no... I'm not despairing... just trying (not too successfully I fear) to make my argument that almost NOTHING is natural.

Living in houses? Driving cars? Using computers? Flying in planes? It's all way-out shit when you really stop and think about it.

Which makes rubber masks seem... well... if not natural, then certainly within the range of "normal" in today's world.

But... wait. There IS something natural left.

Love. Long may it reign. And may we some day reach a place where no one is judged or punished or ostracized for who they love. Because that's the most unnatural phenomenon of all.

(Added to the Cream of the Crop pool as most interesting, as judged by Flickr.)

Tempted, all is vacant

I've been down before

I need replacement

Who knows just where the end is

Who cares what you're defending

I can't see

What you want from me

I can't be, no

What you want me to be

Angel...

Decending, she's never faking

You can see her eyes

There's no mistaking

She knows where the end is

She says just stop pretending

I can't see

What you want from me

I can't be, no

What you want me to be, no

Angel of mine

Angel...

But she said

I'm not bothered

And you're the same

Well I'm done with love

And you're to blame

Sit down

Why don't you listen

Have an open heart

Whoa to our position

Something a bit different. The lighting on the boat and the trees is from a "street" lamp (obscured by the foliage). It looks HDR'd but actually, no. It looks unnatural but I think it works somehow.

Pre COVID I often visited the woods at Morgaston and then wandered into the house grounds of The Vyne NT property - I am a member- and wandered round the lake to the cafe for lunch before returning. These days of course all walks have to stop at the gate to this very tempting path unless you have booked a space. I am looking forward to a time when there is less danger of infection and when we do not have to plan everything in advance!

Look at these Gos Shoes... How can you not just smile :)

Allen Flickr-Freunden ein glückliches, kreatives und vor allem gesundes neues Jahr.

On the subject of Bows and Buttons, I decided on the first time for the bows. But I particularly like clear, geometric shapes and patterns, and it tempts me to try it this time with the buttons.

Beim Thema Bows and Buttons habe ich mich beim ersten Mal für die Schleifen entschieden. Doch mir gefallen besonders klare, geometrische Formen und Muster, und da reizt es mich, es diesmal mit den Knöpfen zu versuchen.

Over and over

Waves of frightening feelings

Floating, weightless, I'm willing

My will keeps bending and breaking, honey

Hold me, trust me

Let me ride in your love all night, babe

Hold me, touch me

I wanna die in your love all night, babe

Lost in your light, baby

I wanna stay right here all night, baby

Let's get lost in the light, baby

I wanna stay right here all night, baby

Oh, now everything's vivid, vivid

Torture tempted with pleasure

I'm reckless, tangled, suspended

You want it all, nothing's wasted, woman

Hold me, trust me

You know you can hide in my arms all night now

Hold me, trust me

I'm gonna ride in your love all night

I'm

Lost in your light, baby (Alright)

I wanna stay right here all night, baby (Alright)

Let's get lost in the light, baby (Alright)

I wanna stay right here all night, baby

(All night, alright)

Midnight, your eyes

Bitter wine, conversations

You and me, some money, babe

I don't need a paycheck (Don't need a paycheck)

One taste and I'm hooked on it

Don't laugh, I know you want it

I'm addicted to your light

Lost in your light, baby

I wanna stay right here all night, baby

(All night, darling)

Let's get lost in the light, baby (All night)

I wanna stay right here all night, baby

(All night, all night)

Let's get lost in the light, baby

That fresh powder and blue skies are so tempting for anyone wanting to walk into this scene.

ENG: Recently I had time again for a stroll in the City West. So I was once again tempted to go to the KaDeWe (department store of the West). Honestly, my last visit is certainly 20 years ago. ☻ Price-wise, nothing has changed, as can be seen from the bottles of wine from the last post. Therefore, there is today something sweet from chocolate for the soul of me for you on the eye. Here, a bottle of wine alone has already cost from 120 euros. Purely architecturally, something has changed, as can be seen in the new escalator system. But more about that later.

This week has been colder and the instinct to stay inside a warm cafe with a warm cup pf tea is inevitable. The taste was strawberry, reminding me of Summer ....

Wish you all a beautiful Sunday .

Venomous voice, tempts me

Drains me, bleeds me

Leaves me cracked and empty

Drags me down like some sweet gravity

The snake behind me hisses

What my damage could have been

My blood before me begs me

Open up my heart again

And I feel this coming over like a storm again

And I feel this coming over like a storm again

Culebra verde de la Hispaniola / Hispaniola Green tree snake (Uromacer catesbyi)

Uromacer catesbyi is a green, short-snouted colubrid snake that is endemic to the island of Hispaniola and its satellite islands. It is commonly called the blunt-headed green treesnake. Uromacer catesbyi is always green, and its maximum body length (measured snout-to-vent) is 830 mm. There are eight recognized subspecies of Uromacer catesbyi.

Uromacer catesbyi is one of three species in the genus Uromacer, a group of tree snakes endemic to Hispaniola. It has the widest distribution of the three species and is found throughout Hispaniola and its satellite islands. It prefers wooded habitats. Of the three species of Uromacer, it is the easiest to identify because of its blunt head and short snout; the other species, U. oxyrhynchus and U. frenatus, have pointed snouts. Uromacer catesbyi is also the only Uromacer species that is both terrestrial and arboreal.

This species is often found sitting in bushes and low branches. It is both an active forager and a sit-and-wait forager. It is also the most generalized forager of the Uromacer species; it preys on both frogs and lizards, while U. oxyrhynchus and U. frenatus only prey on lizards. Some people who have been bitten by U. catesbyi have reported a burning sensation, which suggests that the species, like many rear-fanged colubrids, is mildly venomous.

Death Valley National Park's Eureka Valley in April, 2018.

The main paved road over the mountains from Big Pine that leads to Eureka Valley tends to be closed in the winter (it's probably blocked by deep snow as I write this in late January 2021). The road from the south new Scotty's Castle is a rough unpaved road and it can get washed out and close for extended periods. I've gotten two flats at once on that road, and I was lucky not to get three at once (like I did driving to The Racetrack then White Mountain Road in 48 hours a couple of years ago). Other access options to Eureka Valley tend to be even worse (Steel Pass is best attempted in a narrow, short-wheelbase 4WD vehicle.

If visiting in the more comfortable winter storm season, it's prudent to bring lots of tire repair supplies, a tire inflation pump, not to mention ample water and food. I'm tempted to attempt a visit as storms pass through the area this week, it might be possible to get in, but not out.

I was tempted to leave about 20 minutes before this shot and Am so glad I stayed as the colors got prettier and redder. See previous shots.

This one popped up together with leaves and grass, wonderful color 💞 It's even edible, but you need quite a few to get a mouthful 😊
