SFSU Electronic Music Lab 1987 (under the direction of Dr. Herb Bielawa). This rig contains parts of the original San Francisco Tape Music Center Buchla 100 series modular synthesizer, including an 8 stage sequencer, a rack of Moog filters (HP, LP and BP) and a rack of house-made modules ("guerilla modules"). Not seen is the 16 step Buchla "keyboard" which was (remarkably for when it was built) pressure sensitive and each key was independently tunable. A great rig.
Raspberry Pi 2 is overclocked to 1 GHz with forced turbo (voids the warranty!). It runs pre-configured Raspbian OS by IQ Audio and boots automatically into window environment which in turn starts SunVox app automatically which in turn opens the last session. Like a real synth.

A neat row of NXP HC373 tri-state Octal latches between the selection buttons and the keyboard buttons.
Presumably, these are used to store/latch the button state when a button is pressed, and are then scanned by the microprocessor. The encoders are also buttons, so I'm not sure if the lines going up to the encoders are for the encoder values, the button clicks, or both.
In either case, latches are commonly used to store states and to debounce a button circuit.

That package "U105" is really odd. I've never seen anything like that before, and have no idea what it is. U104 is the same type of thing. Given the size of the traces and caps near them, I assume they're power-related, and that's why they have such a huge package. Maybe some sort of regulator?
First 'row' from L to R:
Stereo headphones jack, L+R mono jacks, MIDI 5-DIN connectors, Raspberry Pi 2 sandwiched with IQ Audio Pi-DAC+ (really fat sounding DAC!), power switch connected to MicroUSB power port on RPi.
Second 'row' from L to R:
Main and control board from an old Evolution UC-16 MIDI controller - LED display and button board were disconnected as they are not needed for the basic operation of the controller. HW volume rotary encoder is in the middle, together with MIDI 5-DIN activity LED's. On the right side is the decoder for the touchscreen LCD by Adafruit.
USB MIDI controller, USB MIDI cable and HDMI decoder are connected via USB to RPi. There is also one extra USB port exposed on the rear side of the box for additional USB peripherals.
HDMI cable delivers the picture to the LCD decoder board. I still need to get nicer flat cable with better angled adapter.
