Las Áreas Protegidas Privadas han crecido explosivamente en Chile a contar de los años 90. Se estima la existencia de unas 500 Áreas Protegidas Privadas que cubren más de 1 millón 400 mil hectáreas en todo el país. La limitación de recursos y la lentitud del estado Chileno han estimulado que personas, comunidades e inversionistas con un sentido de custodia de la naturaleza adquieran grandes áreas aún no protegidas con el objetivo de preservar el valor escénico y recreativo asi como también de instalar negocios llamados "eco-sustentables". "Knowledge is found outside the rules." The budget for the Jaureguiberry school was $300,000 US dollars, much lower per m2 than any conventional construction. The initiative was carry out by Uruguayan private citizens: Victoria Gómez, Camilo Valverde, Joaquín de la Sovera, Federico Palermo and Lucía Cardozo that had the idea to donate a school to the public education system of Uruguay: ANEP. Las viviendas están construidas en base a un concepto altamente estético; son estructuras de barro irregulares, con vidrios de distintos tamaños y botellas de colores incrustadas en los muros. Se moldean con las manos, es realmente como dicen "un trabajo de horneros". Las aberturas están orientadas siempre hacia el norte para conseguir calor en invierno y frescura en verano, y frente a las casas se diseñaron pequeños lagos artificiales que reflejan el calor y la luz del sol en las épocas más frías.

The heavily wooded mountain tops of the Maderas del Carmen are an example of a pine-fir forest. Mountains ranges like the Maderas del Carmen that contain high biodiversity, yet are surrounded by lower desert country are termed “sky islands”. The heavily forested slopes are a stark contrast to the lower desert country, yet they are all a part of one ecosystem.
